It's not so much the graphics, it's simply the amount of atmosphere and the realism of the characters.

There's not a lot of games where I truely felt like a character in this world, and THAT CERTAIN CHARACTER died in episode 2 I was actually sad. Things like that don't ever work on me in a game. I still actually feel concerned for what's happened to Barney in the last game.

That's powerful.

I'll agree about graphics and immersion; other games have definitely surpassed it. But in terms of facial animation? Or heck, scene choreography in general; NOTHING has surpassed it or even come close. I mean, take Mass Effect 2, a game where you spend a lot of time in conversations and you're meant to care about the characters.

COMMANDER SHEPARD DOESN'T CHANGE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.
And heck, neither do most of the characters in the game. Even HL2's citizens elicit more of a reaction from me.

Half-Life 2 has aged like fine wine; I find it difficult to believe how 80% of games produced today still can't match the FPS, photorealism, and aesthetic of HL2, even though it was released in 200...4?

In any case, my personal nominations "most immersive graphics" (not necessarily BEST) go to Assassin's Creed 2 or Gran Turismo 5. The atmosphere of AC2 was almost tangible, and it seriously made me feel as if I was roaming renaissance Italy. Gran Turismo 5 on a hi-def tv... damn. It's a fine piece of work. (not that it makes it an incredible game, but I practically drooled when I first played it.)

For a game that's already almost 7 years old, I'd have to say that it has aged very well. This is particularly in comparison to how the original Half Life looked back in 2004 when HL2 came out.

Sure, there are plenty of games out there right now that look way better but HL2 still immerses me, no problem.
