So, before we begin.

Last night, I was done playing a bit of Half-Life 2/GMod and checked in. And I thought instead of dreaming. My biggest thought was, "Why is Gordon Freeman late in the original Half-Life? Did he get up late? Why?" Then it hit me.

What if he had been hung-over or something? Nah, that wouldn't work.

What if... No. Yes? What if all of this Half-Life gaming is a big G-Man initiated dream?

Then I thought, "What if Half-Life 3 ends with G-Man waking up the player in Gordon's room in Black Mesa, meaning Half-Life and 2 and 3 were dreams? That would explain why he was late."

Then I came up with this crappy scenario.

Gordon sees G-Man saying "Your time has now come. All the effort in the world needs to occur now. I cannot stop what my supervisors force me to do, but I can try. This has all been a dream. You are now a White Coat at Black Mesa. I have given you all of this weapons and HEV Suit and enemy training in hopes you can stop the World's End. Only you can, Mister Freeman. Go." And you play the first part of the first game to the point where Barney opens the door to the main lab and the game ends on the quote: "Catch me later. I'll buy you a beer."

Yes, it's complete crap. So, I want to know how you think Half-Life 3 would end. And a "Freeman is G-Man" plot twist isn't original.

Gordon Freeman might die. It's entirely possible. Quick and simple, especially if you die heroically. People might whinge a bit about killing off the main and therefore favourite character, but bear in mind that if you compared Freeman to the supporting characters you'd see that Freeman is blank canvas surrounded by Michel Angelo paintings. Why does anyone like Freeman at all? His shiny crowbar?

G-man is Freemans father, and as he hangs, one arm missing, from the rebuilt citadel... G-Man tells him so

then freeman would be silent in a way which sounds not at all like

"Its not true! ITS IMPOSSIBLE!"

i think freeman wins, and there is a happy ending, its practically original nowadays.

Alyx is actually a fembot controlled by GLADoS?
i laughed so hard i sent a link to the page to friends, 100 points (i have only ever awarded 10, so woo to you)

Valve craps all over their integrity by making freeman psychic to fight G-mans 'benefactors', magic in half-life FTL

Gordon talks...

And sounds terrible...

And instantly loses his messiah status, the city key, his harem, and any chance to score with Alyx...

And all is right with the world (why? 'Cos Alyx is MINE!/jk)

Gordan is in fact a monkey.

Look up Half-Life 2 speed run on YouTube and during that meeting with Barney and Kleiner, he's acting like one.

No one really commented on my idea yet. Is it crap?

yes it is a very weak and slightly stupid ending. There is no place like home....

Coming full circle can be a good ending, see the new Prince of Persia series (ends with him telling Farah the story that he told in the first game).

On the other hand "it was all a dream" is not a good ending, and most people hate that crap. See Dallas.

Perhaps the G-Man treats us all to a monologue to how much he's proud of Gordon's actions, then says he deserves some rest with his friends and it ends on a reunion with Alyx, Barney, Dr. Kleiner, etc.

Or maybe the G-Man goes, "Guess what Mr. Freeman. The cake wasn't the only lie...so was your life!" And it turns out the "No" answer in Half-Life 1 was actually the one Gordon chose.

Whatever it is, I can probably guess it'll be one heck of a mindfuck.

It's Half-Life2: Episode3, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you were just going for the smaller title.

Anyway, 10 bucks: We find out who G-Man is, who he works for, who has "bought your contract" and you hurt them, alot.
That's pretty much what I've been thinking too. I think Alyx and/or Gordon die in the end, most likely Gordon. (what with the whole messiah/martyr thing to uphold and cementing him with the "jesus-like" status) I've also been thinking that the Nihilanths are still around and have something to do with it all as well. I know Gordon killed one back in Half-Life but they were an entire advanced species. The one he fought fled to Xen to escape the Combine who, coincidentally, also invaded their homeworld. Perhaps they're using the Gman to train/test Gordon by first pitting him against the rogue of their species, the Nihilanth in Xen, so that they can use him and Earth to fight the Combine. 'Course there's also the possibility that every one of our theories are wrong and Valve throws us a curve ball. Who knows.

On a side note, why do people STILL keep referring to Half-Life 3? You may be right that the author of this thread went for a short title, but I still see so many referring to Half-Life 3 as if there is going to be a game after Episode 3. Confusing. I guess they haven't read the dozens of threads in this forum that refer to it.

At The end of Half-Life 3 all of the combine is being sucked into a portal back to the Zen Univers and the G-Man is standin next to you and goes 'Congratuations Mr Freemon...My employers were right about you'...The G Man walks infront of you and goes you seserve a rest and he opens a portal like the one from Half-life 1 and he says 'Go on Freemon its all over now. But the Portal Sends you to the Zen universe and if you wait he goes 'Fair enough if you dont want to rest' He lifts you up and on the the wall and 2 floating maggot things appear beside him but a large battalion of rebels appear with the Vortigons and goes The Freeman shall not be harmned and DOG kills 1 of the maggot things and a big fight and then the G-man blocks the bullets and the Vort you meet in Ep 2 appears beide you and you and the G-man and Freemon kinda breaks of in2 atoms like in the FF movie and the Vort goes you are now free and then the credits rol

Unforgiven is on TV right now. See if you can see its influence in my guess.

After some confusion, Gordon learns that Eli is actually dead. He says, "Eli's not dead. Why would anyone kill Eli?" So now Gordon's pissed. He goes to the bar in City 17 where Gman and some others are hanging out. He shoots them all and when Gman is on the ground, bleeding, he says "I don't deserve this; I was building a house." Then Gordon says, "Deserve ain't got nothing to do with it," and shoots him. Then he gets on his horse and rides back to his ranch.

Now, obviously it won't happen anything like this, but I think Valve might realize that they have to do something waay out of left field to shock people. The whole "Gordon is Gman" was interesting a few years ago, but if it happened now, it wouldn't be a surprise. I'm sure Valve is looking at all the interesting and popular ideas that are out there and completely ignoring them in order to make something that will seem fresh and incredible.

Personally, I think Valve is going to do something whereby the world is saved and returns to peace, but there will always be possibilities for the future (like you see Gman escape in the distance). They won't want to kill off the franchise even for the sake of closure.
