Half Life 3 probably never coming out

Basically ten people at Valve are working on it. But Valve is making bank on Steam, CS:Go, TF2 & DOTA 2 and just plain don't need the money. That plus the ME3 backlash means we may never see MR Freeman rise again.

Of course it's never coming out.

Valve has no reason to release it because there's no possible way it's not going to disappoint. Those of us who have already said they're never buying anything episodic they do again (HIIIII!!!!) would not be swayed to come back to it and their fans might turn on them if it ends up being bad.

They've got everything to lose and very little to gain.

It will come out one day after the last person who cares about it dies. Because for some reason Valve wants to troll us all.

OT: I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to not continues with the Half-Life games, it makes sense for them to continue with other stuff that will net them more money.

I honestly feel like its not coming out because Valve...doesn't really know what made Half Life good. Like listening to Gabe and other devs talk about it, they always seem...befuddled? Like the fact people enjoyed Half Life just seems like a fluke; something they couldn't explain.

Same with Portal and Team Fortress 2, come to think of it. Hell, even Left 4 Dead! They always seem surprised people actually like the games.
I can just imagine a developer meeting, Gabe asks "So what was good in Half Life 2 we can use again in Half Life 3?"
And he just gets crickets, because no one can really explain why it was good, just that it was.

Honestly, I've stopped caring. Like, honest-to-God I don't care anymore. If the game came out on a system I owned, I would certainly pick it up, but it has been so long now that I've moved on. Valve should not have taken this long to begin with, because yeah, hype does eventually become an enemy instead of a friend. This game has reached god-like status in the minds of many, and it won't be able to live up to it no matter what

On the subject of Mass Effect 3, I get what they're worried about. Gamers and the internet in general has gotten pretty dark and unwelcoming in the years (death threats over milliseconds in reload times? Really people?), so I can understand them be worried about that. I don't think it would hit the level that BioWare hit because of a few different reasons, but I'm sure there are people out there who would be pissed. There was just a thread here the other day where people were upset because a character's appearance was changed.
However, again, I feel Valve kind of backed themselves into a corner on this one because they took so long. And now, for them to end the series (possibly) with a cliffhanger like that and decide they're done, despite having plenty of money and talent to keep going, well...not gaining any points in my book.

All of this is, of course, assuming this is true. If it's not, then...well, I still don't really care about Half-Life anymore, but it would be nice to see it eventually.

Well, after the Silent Hills thing from these guys, I'm a little skeptical that what they say is true.

Regardless, it wouldn't surprise me. Valve seems to be content to sit back and let Steam bring in more money than Half-Life 3, or any one game, could ever hope to give them, and the fact that they apparently wouldn't mind introducing paid mods eventually just shows that they have more ideas for how to get Steam to earn them even more money. I mean, who has time for a single game when they're raking in money from thousands of games? And yes, I know that they still occasionally release games, but it doesn't seem to be a huge priority over there any more.

But, then again, maybe Source 2 will finally get them back to prioritizing making their own games. I guess they'll just have to find time when they aren't working on hardware stuff to help grow Steam and working on their extra software-related stuff to help grow Steam.

I think any good developer is usually surprised by a game's success. If a developer thinks that they're making the greatest game ever because THEY'RE the ones making it, then that's when mediocre or straight up bad games get released, because the developer's ego is so great that they can't imagine themselves failing.

That's what happened with Ride to Hell Retribution, the worst reviewed and lowest scored retail game of the last generation. The developers of that game thought they were making the coolest game ever, it was promoted all to hell, there was going to be a three game "event" launch, and the game was an awful pile of crap.

If you guys are finally at acceptance you're ready release your grief over HL3.

So, you know, move on with your lives.

Still here? No really, let it go already, it was never all that to begin with.

Of course it's coming out. They know people want it. They do have actual game devs working there. They'll get bored of just sitting around running a web store forever.

...Wait, people are only just NOW realizing this? I've known about this for a while now, Half Life 3 ain't happening so time to just let it go guys.

IF something is released from valve regarding Half-Life I imagine it might be one of two things:

1) A sequel to Blue Shift or Opposing Force.

or

2) They release Half-Life 4, with the entire premise of the game being "Find out what the fuck happened in Half Life 3 because Even Gordon Freeman doesn't know...there might have been a lot of alcohol involved".

This way they don't have to face the unrealistic expectations (Too much) of how overhyped 3 is.

They also said Final Fantasy VII would never get a remake.
Pointing to one example where people were wrong (especially one that, unlike this instance, had been teased time and again) does not in any way invalidate the idea. I believe this argument is sometimes known as "science was wrong before."

And while we're at it, Michael Bay will get tired of making all that money.

Sure, they've got game developers. You know what else they have? Games.

Their next game should be a reboot. Or if not a reboot, a new game simply called Half-Life.

Confusion abound.

I have difficulty believing that anything that was at one time popular won't eventually get re-made. It may, however, be a reboot.

Okay... That won't mean I can wait for all eternity and shit... I mean, it's like in that one play Waiting For Gordon or something...

Other than that, maybe other people are right in terms of the game itself pulling a FNAF and just appearing on Steam and shit...

Given how long they've been working on the Source Engine 2, I have a feeling the real wait came from them deciding to completely scrap what they had developed and start from the ground up with the new engine (kind of like what they did with TF2).

They also didn't need the money when they made Left 4 Dead 2, and they sure haven't had a need to continue updating the Half-Life games (including the original ones from the 90s) on a regular basis to this day. I think their not needing the money may actually be something which works in the development's favour, since if its a flop the bottomline won't notice.
That plus the ME3 backlash means we may never see MR Freeman rise again.
I have my doubts they can screw up on the level of ME3. That would require an active attempt on their part to ruin the story, and they're aware of that (hell, it came about from EA actively trying to ruin the story after all). ME3 didn't happen by accident, nor could a similar situation arise by accident in the future.

Regarding the fear of backlash I think Valve is forgetting one thing; The hype for a Half-Life 3 announcement peaked years ago. We've been steadily not caring about the this game for a couple of years now. It's come to a point where even rumors of 'will it/won't it' barely even cause a blip on the radar anymore.

Also, Mass Effect was a completely different scenario, since first of all it was a series released in a span of 6 years, it was at the time something new and exciting, and the obvious one ofcourse being that the ending was legitimately godawful shit that made fans feel like the whole journey was a waste of time.

Sure, gaming fandom has become quite vile and poisonous in recent years, but that hasn't stopped plenty of other hyped games with actual quality to still get praised and not have people lose their shit over and cause a riot. Even big controversies like Watch_Dogs, Assassin's Creed Unity, and Batman: Arkham Knight didn't cause as much of a stir, because again, ME3 was a very specific case.

If this is seriously one of their reasons for not making Half-Life 3, Valve is either really out of touch or it's a silly attempt to turn it around on the fans.

I'd wager it's 100% 'Why bother when we got this neverending waterfall of money'.

Half-Life is a valuable IP and nothing lasts forever - at some point Valve (or at least Valve as we know it) will collapse. So, even if they let it rot, someone somewhere will have both the opportunity and the wherewithal to dig up the skeleton and infuse it with an unholy semblance of life, sooner or later.

It's gonna suck so much, you guys.
