Basically ten people at Valve are working on it. But Valve is making bank on Steam, CS:Go, TF2 & DOTA 2 and just plain don't need the money. That plus the ME3 backlash means we may never see MR Freeman rise again.
I honestly feel like its not coming out because Valve...doesn't really know what made Half Life good. Like listening to Gabe and other devs talk about it, they always seem...befuddled? Like the fact people enjoyed Half Life just seems like a fluke; something they couldn't explain.Dalek Caan said:It will come out one day after the last person who cares about it dies. I think any good developer is usually surprised by a game's success. If a developer thinks that they're making the greatest game ever because THEY'RE the ones making it, then that's when mediocre or straight up bad games get released, because the developer's ego is so great that they can't imagine themselves failing.Silentpony said:I honestly feel like its not coming out because Valve...doesn't really know what made Half Life good. Same with Portal and Team Fortress 2, come to think of it. Hell, even Left 4 Dead! They always seem surprised people actually like the games.
I can just imagine a developer meeting, Gabe asks "So what was good in Half Life 2 we can use again in Half Life 3?"
And he just gets crickets, because no one can really explain why it was good, just that it was.
Pointing to one example where people were wrong (especially one that, unlike this instance, had been teased time and again) does not in any way invalidate the idea. I believe this argument is sometimes known as "science was wrong before."CritialGaming said:They also said Final Fantasy VII would never get a remake.
And while we're at it, Michael Bay will get tired of making all that money.Tilly said:Of course it's coming out. They know people want it. They do have actual game devs working there. They'll get bored of just sitting around running a web store forever.
Their next game should be a reboot. Or if not a reboot, a new game simply called Half-Life.Infernai said:...Wait, people are only just NOW realizing this? I've known about this for a while now, Half Life 3 ain't happening so time to just let it go guys.
IF something is released from valve regarding Half-Life I imagine it might be one of two things:
1) A sequel to Blue Shift or Opposing Force.
or
2) They release Half-Life 4, with the entire premise of the game being "Find out what the fuck happened in Half Life 3 because Even Gordon Freeman doesn't know...there might have been a lot of alcohol involved".
This way they don't have to face the unrealistic expectations (Too much) of how overhyped 3 is.
They also didn't need the money when they made Left 4 Dead 2, and they sure haven't had a need to continue updating the Half-Life games (including the original ones from the 90s) on a regular basis to this day. I think their not needing the money may actually be something which works in the development's favour, since if its a flop the bottomline won't notice.MatParker116 said:Basically ten people at Valve are working on it. I have my doubts they can screw up on the level of ME3. That would require an active attempt on their part to ruin the story, and they're aware of that (hell, it came about from EA actively trying to ruin the story after all). ME3 didn't happen by accident, nor could a similar situation arise by accident in the future. That plus the ME3 backlash means we may never see MR Freeman rise again.
