Half life 3?

A "full" Half Life game always coincides with a new engine. So my guess is, they'll do EP3 then in 2040 we'll get Half Life 3.

there have been 2 full hl games, can we really say that EVERY HL game will have a new engine if it's only happened twice

Just extrapolating from previous facts here. But come on, original Half Life, expansion, Half Life 2 (new engine), episodes. There's a pretty clear pattern there.

2+2=4. 2x2=4. Therefore if 3+3=6, 3x3=...

Seriously, there is no pattern. And Portal 2 is on the same engine as Portal but waaaay updated.

This picture can only be barely good, if it's made by a person whos experience in a 3d software is no more than 5 minutes.I can't even believe that people actually think that this can be legit in any way.All he basically did is took hl2 models and posed them really badly.He didn't even added any background.-___-

Well, fuck me then, turns out i'm so qualified that i can go and apply for job of art director at Valve right now.Seriously though, i don't say that this picture doesn't have right to exist(i'm sure that the guy who made this picture is very proud of himself, good for him), i'm just saying that this could not be, in any way, made by Vavle because Vavle makes pure awesome, and that "piece of artwork" is nowhere near it.

I think thats very subjective

while I wouldnt put this on my wall or use it as a desktop background (and thats completley up to personal taste) I dont think this image is of particually low quality and it serves its perpose very well

I understand there's some kind of an argument going on here... but if I can just cut in for a second...

Okay, let us theorise for a moment that Half-Life 3, or Episode 3, has been released. The fanbase goes nuts for it, plays it, loves it, it becomes a historical shining example of FPS gaming, etc etc etc.

And then what is Valve left with? Half-Life has been their flagship for so long now, and even with all the side projects they have, when the series ends it's going to leave a bit of a void. What's going to fill it? Portal? I highly doubt it. They need to phase out Half-Life slowly, introducing us to new ideas and games that will take its place once it's gone. I don't see Valve as the types to milk a series beyond reason, so after Episode 3, they're going to need to put the series more or less to bed, and find something else to fill the spotlight.

Hence, my theory: The reason they are delaying HL3 is in order to work on other projects to satisfy their fans when it's gone. Perhaps we'll see a game based on the Seven Hour War, or perhaps they'll start a whole new franchise altogether, or simply focus on multiplayer gaming. It would be a shame if they didn't keep putting their design philosophy to good use, though.

I've kind of lost interest now to be honest.

HL2 was my favorite game for a long time but it has dated now and the only way to keep the franchise fresh would be HL3 on a new engine which I really doubt is happening.

Agreed, Although I think they will definitely make a new engine, I mean source is so old now. Even if it was a more modified source engine, it would still be dated in comparison with things like the Cryengine 3. A new engine is a must IMO.

I think sooner or later, or much sooner, Valve are going to make an announcement. They must see all this discussion about it.
