Half-Life Mod Heading to Steam After 15 Year Development

Sven's Co-op mod will be free and stand alone when it releases on Steam.

On most scales of human time, fifteen years would fall under the category of "long." Long enough that, through duration alone, Sven's Co-Op mod could qualify as impressive. The mod, which adds cooperative play modes to the original Half-Life, has been consistently updated by its creators for a decade and a half. After recently announcing, however, that the latest version of the mod would likely be the last, the team behind Sven's Co-op received a pleasant surprise from none other than Valve itself. The Sven Co-op Development Team has revealed that Valve will helping it create a custom version of the mod that will be distributed via steam.

"After nearly fifteen years in development as a mod for Half-Life...we've been granted access by Valve to work on our own custom version of the Half-Life engine," announced the modders in a <a href=http://forums.svencoop.com/showthread.php/41097-The-Big-Announcement?p=494183>forum posting. "We are grateful beyond expression to Valve for their generosity and efforts put forth to make this possible. We're looking forward to working with one of the greatest game engines ever made." While the current version of Sven's Co-op needs to be applied to an existing install of Half-Life, the Steam edition will be a stand-alone title that includes a cooperative version of the game's official campaign. In addition, the Sven Co-op Development Team hopes to utilize Valve's resources in efforts to increase "stability, performance, and gameplay improvements" within the new version. Fixing features and releasing updates will also be simplified thanks to Valve's SteamPipe content delivery system. Perhaps best of all, as with the original mod, the Steam version will be completely free.

OT: This is really cool. I love how Valve actively encourages modders. And co-op in the first Half Life? I gotta try this.

I've been an active supporter of the Sven team for years. Their mod has brought my friends and I years of entertainment at LANs and in the online arena. As such, when I heard that their latest update would be their last I was really bummed.

Imagine my surprise when I first read that it was to be their last update because they were working on a stand-alone version.

As impressive as the mod's been over the years; with the wealth of incredible alterations and additions the Sven team added; the version of the GoldSrc engine they've been using has some pretty steep limitations in the areas of things like map sizes, entity counts, simultaneous sounds, etc. So to hear that they are building their own version of GoldSrc, and doing so with the help of Valve, has me pumped.

Can't wait to see what they accomplish.

You really should. The current version includes all three Half-Life campaigns. Half-Life, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force. All playable solo or co-op.

Not even going to try to list some of the custom campaigns and maps the community has made over the years. There's just far too many.

All in all it's an amazingly robust mod.

Never played this mod, but as I understand it, it's Half-Life 1 in co-op. So, if they could combine this with the Black Mesa mod (Half-Life 1 made with the source engine), it would porbably just be perfect.

Pretty much this, that mod was tonnes of fun.

As soon as I read the "Half-Life Mod Heading to Steam After 15 Year Development" I knew it would be Sven Coop.

Helping a mod team for one of your old games? A paltry sum of money.
Officially releasing a popular mod for your flagship title? Costs you nothing.
The amount of good PR this will bring? Priceless.

This is what always has me scratching my head with EA, Microsoft etc. Supporting mods is either cheap or free, depending on how they go about it, yet it gets them sales and the good PR can't be calculated. To pull this Valve has shown why they have earned the support they have and why their rolling in money.

I heard the HL3 dev team also mans the 24/7 free BBQ buffet so until Gabe leaves Valve HL3 wont happen.

I wouldn't say it costs them nothing. They're not only giving the Sven team full access to all of the Half-Life 1 content; meaning Half-Life, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force will be in the game and free to anyone that plays; but they've offered their support in more ways than just "Here's the content. Have at it." (of course, this is ignoring the hosting costs)

From what I've been hearing, some at Valve are going to actively help the Sven team code the new stand-alone. Perhaps not at the backend but certainly at the frontend. So, if anything, Valve could be taking a loss with this since the stand-alone will be free to download.

An extremely paltry loss, mind you. Almost nonexistent, really. But still.

Ahh Valve. Where are you when we need to teach Microsoft... Well... A lot of things actually. Good customer service, good PR, doing things actually liked by the community, anything selfless, etc.

OT: Bummer that they're finally going out, but you can't deny they aren't going out with a bang. Kick ass!

Not sure if you're being serious, but...

Technically impossible. Despite what Valve once said, it is not possible to simply port a HL1 mod to the source engine -- you need to re-do everything from scratch or end up with a half-assed effort like HL:Source, with a retarded AI and broken levels. That's one of the reasons why Black Mesa took forever to release.
Sven's Coop would need to be redone completely for HL:Source or Black Mesa, as a mod for those games, not one for Half-Life. Which is not going to happen any time soon. The Black Mesa team could have included coop as they were making the mod, but as they opted not to (or maybe scrapped it for reasons), there'll be no HL2 coop mod arriving soon.
