There's an HD project to put HL1 into source kicking around someplace.

But i'm with you, I can't understand the crusader-like fervour that people have about it. Sure, it represented a massive change in gaming, but it is 2012 now.

I don't like Vegimite. It's strange considering I like Marmite. Go figure.

I agree, it's fucking boring as hell, and generic.
The level design is boring, and the vehicle segments go on forever . And every weapon apart from the gravity gun is boring.

HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME ! No just kidding, that's Baldurs Gate :3

OT: It is a good, perhaps even a great game, I really enjoyed them anyway. To each his own, that's all I gotta say on this.

3x Combo!

OT: Well, the main appeal of it is how organic it is. Not only the mood-setting environments but the gameplay as well. There are so many times in it where you have the opportunity to do something awesome and memorable, but at the same time you could just run-n-gun COD-style or outright screw everything up.

Also, if people tell you it's the story, then they're a bit forgetful on the story (aliens attack, you have to fight them). It's the characters that make the narrative worth it. Alex Vance has been described as one of the best portrayals of women in a game. She's not a total cliched badass, but she can hold her own without a man's help 99 out of 100 times.

But as many have said, you can't argue taste, and I can't make you like it.

I always thought half life 1 was rather over-rated. Then again, I had no choice but to play it on the ps2...

However, I think half life 2 is brilliant, as are the 2 episodes. Yes, I know there were more on steam, but you forget that valve only tolerates us console players.

Half Life has always been breaking the formula and setting a new one since the first game, of course its nothing special now because of everyone following its example.

I say the same thing to people when they complain about Seinfeld, it was groundbreaking for its time. Damn near ever FPS that has come out since has emulated Half-Life to some degree. You say generic run and gun, I ask how you expected a game from 1998 to have been a medium-wide radical success and stay original.

Ah, here we have another progressive-minded, forward-thinking gamer who isn't afraid to regale us with their insights. Do you want a pat on the back? Yep, you taught us all a lesson about the importance of individuality and going against convention. I'm cleaning up the fragments of my monocle as we speak.

Really? My issue isn't so much that you say that don't like the game, but that you bothered to share this opinion with the rest of the world when the sum of your critical evaluation can be boiled down to, "Uh, it isn't good." How is that supposed to spark a discussion? You haven't bothered to actually analyze the game and your reaction to it and share those issues, be they technical, design-based, art-based, plot-based, etc. Because your opinion doesn't contain any analysis, the only counter-argument one could make is, "Nuh-uh!"

Yes, yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and so-forth, but by the same token, no one needs to respect under-thought and/or poorly communicated opinions. If the OP had contained some measure of analysis that explained WHY they feel the game didn't work for them, then that would carry more weight. Without any additional information, it just feels like yet another person on the internet trying to prove their "edgy" bona fides.

Tl;dr: this is super dumb.

I could never be bothered to finish it. After the soldiers show up it gets boring and that's about where I stop playing.

Oh wow.
How long's it been since the last thread?
*checks watch*

The last "I'm not amazed by Half Life 2. Witness my awesome uniqueness and DISPAIR!" thread is over already? Christ...

Look, every beloved thing will have a portion of people who don't see what's so great, or even hate it.

Doesn't warrant a thread for each revelation.

Regardless on your personal opinion on it, Half Life was and will always be considered revolutionary for its time. The game alongside games like Deus Ex helped project the FPS from the Quake era into the beginnings of the modern era. Compare it to Battlefield 3 or Halo and it'll seem run of the mill, but Half Life revolutionised it all.

If you enjoy the game for what it was then you'll like it, if not then you wont, It doesn't matter though, because it is an important part of gaming history.

I can't remember much of the first Half-Life since it's been so long, but HL2 is amazing because of it's map designs, the many different challenge lay-outs and that it lets you use a weapon as unique as the gravity gun for so many things. Not only that, but the game play is really smooth (on computer any way) and the characters are alright, not as painful as most.

It's a shame so many gamers can't see how fleshed out it is. Also, I have no idea how you can call it generic when there is so many different types of challenges.

Well, have not played any Valve games except Portal 2, since I got it as a discount, but I, of course have seen the critical acclaim as well. Of course you're entitled to your opinion of how it wasn't all that great to your expectations, but I think it's just best to keep your opinions to yourself. Not saying as an insult at all, but I bet the above posts say how it is exasperating to hear how games didn't wow someone and that it's wasting the time of people posting this exact thing, so I've got advice: just move on for the next best thing! Forget that ol' game and get a game you enjoy, and if you don't, fuggedaboutit, you can't complain about a game/series forever, i mean look at Jack Thompson. Hope you find more to your liking in the near future!

Anyway, did everyone forget about System Shock or something? I thought that game paved most of these FPS mentioned, it was released before Half-Life for god's sake!

The Model T analogy is about right. Games like HL2 should be appreciated as classics rather than compared to newer games. It's a product of its time, it was years ahead of that time and the reason it now looks a shade generic is because it became the textbook on how shooters should be made. It's a series that, more the first instalment than the second, has dragged the industry forward.

So, I'm saying the HL series (so far) deserves a free ride on a historical basis (you probably wouldn't care much for any of the old arcade games any more, but only rabid contrarians would argue that Pac-Man doesn't deserve a place in the hall of fame). The world is full of great historic relics that would be as lame as hell if they were made yesterday.

well by todays standards....yea its kinda run and gun. back when it was released (keep in mind HL2 was released...what..7 years ago?) it was the cutting edge of....well everything. And the graphics prevent it from aging poorly as it is not photorealistic (which age like liquid crap). Hell, HL2 created a benchmark that wouldnt be surpassed until Crysis 1.

Model T ford is a piece of crap compared to todays cars, doesnt diminish what it accomplished. A lot of the magic that was HL2 has been copied in other games after it was released, so quite honestly i dont hold it against anyone who played that games years after they have been released.

It is like our generation scoffing at black and white movies when, at the time, they were very profound.
This guy right here. Basically what he said.

Half life 1 is great(the solider AI was fun to play with), even today its better than most shooters without even trying to be. HL2 on the other hand felt rushed and felt alot like a generic shooter, I really hated the level layouts...so small so boring....
