Because the turrets designed as a deterrent, rather than a weapon?

It's like a mock security camera. People don't commit crimes when they think they're being watched, even if they aren't. Likewise, if an automated machine gun let's people know where it is and has a big ol' laser pointer telling you where it's looking, it doesn't need to shoot to scare off most people.

Think about it, how many of the turrets in Portal 2 could have been incapable of firing, and you still would have avoided them? ;) (Aside from the Naff turrets, of course)

Face it - after Portal 2, that universe has nothing to do with the Half-Life one. Apart from the extremely fucking clever reference by Cave Johnson, of course. Stop trying to make sense of it.
And that harbor easter egg.

They are both major research facilities so they probably get their money from investors and government research funding. Besides, they probably research different things, despite it both being scientific research.

yeah, Aperture may be a less-serious comapany, but which company is the one that tore our demension a new asshole and unleashed a shit ton of deadly deadly monsters upon the world?

I remember reading somewhere that Mesa and Aperture were both in a sort of 'race' to create portal technology, which Mesa won because of the resonance cascade.
Though while Mesa made the first portal... Aperture science made a stable way of creating portals, linking them and making the whole thing portable.

It'll be interesting to see how the two link up in episode three if it ever comes out.

Black Mesa serious company? They were running on tape and gum when you came rolling around man, they were going down for a long time. Aperture science ran on SCIENCE.

And on the murderous AI robot that wouldn't let science be stopped.

Well I think of Portal as noncanon, even if it's in the same setting and timeline. They're seperate games, does it really matter?

Aperture Science is a defense contractor for the United States Government, thus, they are kept rolling in dough no matter what garbage they come up with.
A contractor with 0 contracts...

I think the 'how on earth did Aperteture Science stay in business' question is supposed to be part of the humour. It's a shower curtain company that happens to also possess the tech to build sentry guns, portals and maniacal super computers whilst having no contracts. More importantly, how in Hell did Aperture keep finding new employees all the time?

The worst that happened to Black Mesa staff (pre-resonance cascade scenario) was Dr Kleiner locking himself out of his office. Nobody had to suffer teeth emmancipation.

It's all a big joke and I'm getting a head ache.

Portal technology and fall boots are way more useful to the military than zero-point energy field manipulation.
Yes to the long-fall boots, no to the portal gun. It's not practical enough since it can only create portals on one type of surface. And carrying around the moon rock gel isn't efficient in any way. So that avenue is closed (scientists dead, GLaDOS obsessed with testing) since there is no one to improve the design of the gun to work on various surfaces.

I think I'll stick with the "lift'n'squash" gun.

The only reason why they could keep doing business, was because of the Portal technology. The army funded them because they wanted the portal technology. Aperture Science and Black Mesa were competing for the funding and Black Mesa won in the end, that's why they went bankrupt.

I and the people at Valve agree that Aperture Science shouldn't be in the same world as Black Mesa, because of the different atmosphere, like you said Portal is too funny to be in the world of Half-Life. When they made Portal 1 they had to put in the same universe as Half-Life because it was only an experiment back then and they didn't have many resources. That's the reason why they try to separate the two games and set Portal 2 hundreds of years in the future.

I don't think ground up moon rocks is the only surface you can place portals on. I'm not sure but it seems to me like they discovered that you can ALSO grind up the moon for portals, in addition to the usable surfaces on earth.

Yes he said they make a great portal conductor meaning other things do to :D
I would by a turret anyday, and evening at the improv one.

Well, this actually cleared things up.I always thought Valve insisted that portal is in the same universe as half-life and didnt want to change it.
Sry for my lack of knowledge on the subject :)

I think the only reason Portal and HL are in the same world is because Portal was an experiment, and Valve knew damn well that HL fanboys would buy anything that even remotely mentioned that franchise. As such, I don´t even consider the Portal and HL worlds to have anything to do with one another. Maybe I´m too cynical, but the only reason for any relation is a reasonably keen business sense on Valve´s part.
You may now flame me and declare Valve to be a collection of gods worthy of naught but our utter devotion who would never do anything to make more money. I´ll politely disagree.

Aperture Science also makes shower curtains aside from their defense contracting. Also, Black Mesa DID have funding... until they were destroyed in an unfortunate portal accident that nearly ended the world. Difference between the 2 companies: Aperture Science's tech was based off of the mad ravings of Cave Johnson and much of their tech was never sold, even though it was advanced it was considered too dangerous for human use. Black Mesa, on the other hand, was a normal science lab even though they were able to compete with Aperture.

This is inaccurate, they used moon rocks because they couldn't find any other material that would hold the portal's charge. It quite simply requires a material that Cave Johnson implies can only be found on the moon.
