If Halo was a film series, and this was your suggestion for its sequel, then I'd be fully behind it. However, if Masterchief 'isn't needed to win fights', then there would either be gameplay/story dissonance with teammates being generally useless in combat whilst you're being told how awesome they are, or, you find that you don't have to do anything in the fights in the game, as your super awesome supersoldiers kill all the enemies and advance for you. I'm just not seeing how much of a game can be created from this idea.

Well, Halo 2 and 3 were always designed to be epic stories of survival and destruction on a galaxy-wide scale; the storytelling was always going to be a very "broad strokes" style. The hidden terminals in Halo 3 tried to add some extra backstory, and if (or should that be when?) Halo 2 HD Anniversary Superduper Edition is released I expect we'll see more terminals or collectibles there too.

As games that are peripheral to the main series, I suppose ODST and Reach were more succesful from a storytelling perspective as they were legitimately able to linger a lot more closely on individual characters and situations.

Can we agree that the story in Halo Wars was a load of pap? In my mind, Halo Wars is non-canon in pretty much every respect.

Nope, it's technically canon.

It's weird how everyone hammers Halo Wars' story. It wasn't the greatest, but it certainly wasn't horrible. Halo wars explored the early conflicts between the covenant, and the UNSC. It never changed anything established in the books (The mission on Harvest ended before it actually fell, as the book said). While I will concede that the story didn't really impact the overall story that much, since everything was resolved by the end of the game.

I'm pretty sure chief is supposed to be one of the most resourceful and adaptable humans ever, so if he woke up in an advanced age he'd probably have himself a suit of Mark XV armour or whatever before the end of the day.

What if the Chief woke up on a human colony that had been thought lost to the covenant ages ago, and found that it has turned into a barbaric scavenger-world? Something like that could be cool. The war is over, now humanity has to reclaim its lost worlds.

How can someone say bad things about the story for Halo 4 when there hasn't been any details given out? We don't even know who the bad guys are!
But we do have the details. We know the basic plot now.
Oh please, enlighten me. They tell us that we are stuck on some planet and you can already figure out the basic plot events from it.
