It's a good move. Since most people have played through three whole games as John, they can give him a compelling sense of character with an epic, emotive sweep without even having to do any good writing. Just add soundtrack.

Look at how many people actually care about Captain Price.

It's a bit late for that now...

Might as well just introduce a new character, really. You're not going to be able to give a man whose image is overwhelmingly a mute, power-suited supersoldier much personality without horribly dividing the fanbase. As is the case with a lot of mute protagonists, they are solely a vessel for the player's personality.
The misconception is that, Master Chief was never a mute, he always spoke, just not during gameplay.

8 minute mark and on, you see MC talking.

OT: It will be hard for them to explore much of his background, well since, it already had been in Fall of Reach, where it showed his origin. I guess they could show ingame events of parts of the origin.

Or just show us the personality he had in the book more.

Would a brain-washed, genetically enhanced, super soldier have much of a personality? You know, other thank Kill shit and follow orders to the letter (which he doesn't actually do). He'd certainly have trust issues if he was kidnapped at 8 years old, and some sort of pseudo-Oedipus complex with Halsey and therefore Cortana.
I apologize if this seems snarky, but I've been watching a lot of ZP, and Yahtzee has rubbed off on me (but not in a gay way).

Hell, I'd be up for flashbacks to before Cortana was just an AI. Back when she was a scientist (Catherine E Halsey)or whatever, like in that short story 'The Package' in Halo Legends. That's probably non-canon tho?

I love that scene... "Don't make a girl a promise..."

I'd like to see when they first met.
Nope, that episode of the anime is canon even if people deny it. Though Catherine E Halsey isn't dead, I mean, she and Cortana live side-by-side, so it wouldn't be much of a flashback.

John met Catherine, when she visited him on Eridanus II, just before ONI kidnapped him.

Or if you mean when he met Cortana, that was the day before The Fall of Reach ended.

Should I be reading the books or something? All I know are the games and Legends.
Yes! You should they really really good.

The order of the books goes as follows:

-Halo: Cryptum (Forerunner Saga)
-Halo: Contact Harvest
-Halo: The Fall of Reach, The Cole Protocol which takes place during parts of FoR, I believe.
-Halo 1(game)/The Flood (Book form)
-Halo: First Strike
-Halo: Ghosts of Onyx
-Halo: 2 (Game)
-Halo 3: ODST (game)
-Halo: 3 (Game)
-Halo: Glasslands (Post War Series)
-Halo: 4 (Game)

I would suggest with Fall of Reach and then go in any real order, though I would say First Strike makes Ghosts of Onyx, 3rd act make much more sense. Then Glasslands makes extreamly more sense by Ghosts of Onyx.

Just a note: The Fall of Reach, Contact Harvest and Cole Protocol and the first part of Ghosts of Onyx all take place at parts of the same time. Fall of Reach shows John as he grows up in the Spartan program and how Harvest is attacked and the covenant discovered, so Contact Harvest takes place during the book. Then Cole Protocol takes place sometime after that.

But reading Contact Harvest/The Cole Protocol won't make The Fall of Reach confusing as they aren't needed one bit to understand the story.
