Bungie only did that after they'd made the core 3 games in the trilogy, and we already knew 343 industries made a 'Halo 4' which was also billed as a trilogy and had an unfinished story. All the games in the series which have had the Master Chief in them and all the titles that have launched with a console have had a number and the non-numbered games were standalone or side stories to the main narrative.
