Joystiq has learned that the previously rumored remake of Halo: Combat Evolved will indeed launch this holiday season for Xbox 360 with a full visual overhaul. Sources explain that the re-release is not Bungie's 2001 Xbox game simply running at a higher resolution -- it's being remade with new art assets. While Halo's audio will likely remain unaltered, the controls will allow for more recent Halo configurations.

The Halo: Combat Evolved remake is allegedly being developed by New Jersey-based Saber Interactive, the company behind TimeShift and Namco's upcoming Inversion, but we've been unable to confirm the nature of the engine powering it. We understand that it's something other than the Reach engine.

The Halo: Combat Evolved update, one of two Halo games currently in development under the watchful eye of 343 Industries, is expected to support 1080p resolution and 3D televisions. Details on multiplayer are supposedly still being worked out, but we understand the remake will likely feature online co-op (the original game supported two-player split-screen co-op).

The game is expected to re-evolve on November 15, 2011, ten years after Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the Xbox. Our sources didn't know of any plans to similarly upgrade the recently disconnected Halo 2, but it's hard to imagine Microsoft playing favorites with its biggest franchise.
Boarding Action + Xbox Live=Me buying this game on day 1. I play Halo 1 a lot and *incoherant fanboy*

Huh. I might get this, I guess, although it seems kinda.... um... is "superfluous" the word? CE is only 10 years old.

Huh. That sounds pretty good. Visually upgraded remakes are always nice; maybe they'll do Halo 2 next, and then...

"for Xbox 360"

...oh. Never mind.

I'm not too excited about Custom Edition coming to Xbox Live. The main reason I enjoyed Custom Edition was how you could screw around with virtually everything, if not completely everything, where in current Halo games (Reach being the most editable) you can modify certain things but you can't make a pistol shoot rockets.

Maybe a remake of Custom Edition or some game like it would be more appealing.

I have mixed opinions on this. I mean the first Halo game was so good that it's still an amazing blast to play even after nine years, it only seems to get better with time. I don't see how updating everything makes it better.

I mean sure it could be quite cool to see everything in high def and I'd be all over it if it featured Thel Vadam as the Antagonist to add more depth to the story and if it allowed me to play as an Elite in multiplayer but still.... I don't know. It could be good but it's still a remake and this time it's a remake of a game I love, so I'm very much on the fence with this one.

Bottom line for me:
It could be good but they might also ruin my nostalgic memories.

The original really aged well considering it came out in 2001 and ten years later, it's one of the few games I replay today and that's including games that came out in 2010. If they make it worst...

Vrex360, Custom Edition was (I believe) purely multiplayer.. The storyline would probably be on Halo.

NO.

No no no no, no. Just no.

I am not optimistic about this. Halo CE is already awesome enough as is. Even labeling it as a 'remake' is going too far in my eyes. At most, making it compatible with xbox live is as far as it should ever go. Nothing about that game's mechanics should ever be changed.

Why remake? Halo CE is a pretty good game. And not only for xbox/Halo fanboys.

Seriously, there are game that need a remake way more than this one.

Heey, Saber Interactive, you're back in the spotlight again? Awesome.

I would really rather you've focused on Inversion, y'know, that one game that looks actually fun?

Alright, sorry. It's not developed by 343, is it? Therefore, it's probably not a major title in the series. I'm alright with that. I don't think CE necessarily needs a remake, but I'll play it.

If it's not good, don't play it.

Really, I could see how I would be super pissed if they made a terrible nextgen version of the first CoD game, but... you still always have the original.

There will be one of two reasons why people will buy this:

1.you are a graphics whore.

2.you are a Halo fanboy.

...or both. I'm not saying it's bad but just degrading.
