I don't see the point, the original still holds up pretty well...
Xbox live. Also money.
ha... Microsoft in a nutshell...

OP: cool, I guess, better graphics are always good but I guess it's so the latest gamers can play it.

Funny how everyone complains when Microsoft remakes Halo but when Sony did the same thing with God of War barely anyone complained.

Halo: CE is not 'Halo: Custom Edition'

It's Halo: Combat Evolved.

Goddamnit you guys, seriously.

I'm very happy personally, as long at his is ONLY graphics they're updating.
I wouldn't mind them adding in the 'hijack vehicles' thing, that was a good gameplay mechanic.
But the new weapons? No.
Dual weild? No.

They need to bring back the shield/healthpacks combo.

*insert how unnecessary a CE remake is rant here*

As long as it isn't XBox-exclusive, I'll probably get it.
I seriously doubt it'll be multiplatform...

Microsoft still hold the rights and they won't just give them up like that.

Obiously some heavy cashgrabbing going on. However Halo:CE with Xbox live mutliplayer is what a lot of fans would really want.

As long as it is reasonably priced and they don't totally ruin the engine then I'd get it.
If they even slightly change the engine from the first game, it's already a loss in my books.

The only good thing that could come out of this that I might remotely care about is multiplayer capability for xbox players that doesn't involve xbox connect. And seeing as this game already has a fanbase on PC still going fairly strong, a remake for xbox just seems stupid to me. No matter how well they do it I won't buy it because I already have it on PC. Which also has Halo Custom Edition. Nuff said.

Somehow, I have a feeling that this "new version" will be the equivalent of what would be a free mod if it was on the PC :/

At least I hope they'll recruit in the modding community to make it (like Valve does when someone makes an outstanding mod of a Valve game).
Those are two different mods. A mod from a game on STEAM requires programming knowledge, as for the mods that you have seen in Halo before, most are done with programs that are just select, edit, done.
True, but creativity is still a good quality. I don't care about one's programming experience if they can make a map that I love to use. Coldsnap and Hugeass are two prominent examples.

For long time PC players, CE always means Custom Edition.

Seeing as I can go under the assumption that it's made by Microsoft (I haven't even honestly looked at the article in the original post) I can almost guarantee it's going to be XBox Exclusive with a dull sliver of hope for a PC version which will probably be completely shot down due to Microsoft having their heads shoved up their asses and don't want to give players the ability to modify anything.

I'm well aware of that fact.

I won't buy it if they don't change enough from the original. Maybe change the mechanics, rework the story a little. Change enough to warrant a purchase.

I meant it in the sense of a graphical/balancing mod (e.g. Cinematic mod [http://www.cinematicmod.com/]), not a complete overhaul (which would be the equivalent of a different game or an addon (e.g. Dear Esther [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_Esther]))
Oh, I misunderstood, my bad. :)
It was a good point though, I have to admit it's one of the few PC games for which I never looked for mods, so I had never heard of Custom Edition or any other mod that exists for Halo 1 (shame on me for that).

Then you probably won't get it :(

Afaik, MS are also the ones who made Alan Wake from a PC exlusive to a console exclusive, so I wouldn't have much hope on that side :(

Halo CE already does what Halo CE does about as well as it can be done. The only thing I'd really be interested in is a precise 360 port of gameplay and graphics, where the only difference was xbox live with good netcode built in (And perhaps higher rendering resolution. That usually doesn't hurt.).

Halo CE to Halo 2 represented a massive overall style change the series, and everyone has since stuck with the Halo 2 and onward form (which is why the series takes crap for being samey; it's not that HCE and Halo 2 are similar, because that's ridiculous, it's that Halo 3 and Halo 2 are similar). Any new game, remake or not, is likely to be built in that Halo 2 and onward style, and frankly if they do that I'd rather they just make an entirely new game.

I'm skeptical of whether this news is real or not though; on the one hand it's on a reputable source, yet at the same time, Frankie just recently said that there was nothing to announce for 2011.

If you want change from the original, get Halo 2. Or Halo 3. Or ODST. Or Reach.

I wonder how much longer Halo is going to be milked for money.
Until new laws come to say that recreation of certain games is against the law or that certain games can not be remade.

With new people joining the Halo series there will be those who want more from Halo because there are improvements that could be made, which gives developers an opportunity for a new Halo game.
im pretty sure i read a news thread stating that microsoft wanted to release one new halo franchise game per year, be it spinoff sequel or remake, for the forseeable future :/

Which is basically what Lucasarts has been doing with Star Wars, so we can expect a steady stream of progressively more and more terrible halo games for at least the next 15 years.... yaaaay

Well yeah, I own all those games, and they did change a great deal from the original, but I also started with the game on PC, played a lot of Custom Edition as well, and I think that releasing the same game in mostly original form is rather shameless. I was hoping it'd be more of a "reimagining" to an extent. If I wanna play the original's multiplayer, I'd do it on my PC. If I wanted the maps to be updated, why not release them for Reach? If I wanted to play the original game, WHY NOT JUST PLAY THE ORIGINAL? It's only ten years old, for god's sake. It's not like people can't just play Halo on their Xbox 360s anyway.

And Halo was great, but it's not like it didn't have massive, massive flaws. The pacing was terrible in some places. If they can find a way to fix that, maybe tell the same story with some of the elements changed, maybe different level design or something, then it'd be worth it. I don't think that they should add anything drastic like ADS or some bullshit like that but a litle experimentation never hurt.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you there; at least in that hell, if I want to play the original, I will play the original. I don't care that much what happens with any remake here, but part of me does not want to see what I love about Halo CE butchered, as well as seeing the fanbase of the already barely active Halo PC group moving over to that. I don't want what I have grown to love to die for the sake of slightly shinier things to look at and small improvements in sectors of the game that make little to no difference (to me at least) in the overall enjoyment of the game.

Doesn't matter what they do though, nothing will draw me away from Halo PC. HPC4LIFE!
