Halo 3 is a good game.
It's not deserving of all of the love it gets from the fanboy's but it's not bad enough to get all of this so-called "halo hate"

In Fact, looking at Halo 1 and 2, those were all full of assholes too.

First of all, everyone that jumped into this thread and ragged on the poster for "starting a thread that's been done before" needs to go f*ck themselves out of basic principle for being less than useless. That kind of behavior makes you worse than the guy that made the repeat thread in the first damn place. It's harsh, but it had to be said.

Now, back on topic. I played the first Halo for the PC for a while, both the single player campaign and the online multiplayer. It isn't a bad game at all. The combat was fairly solid, the vehicles handled all right, and the story wasn't exactly Ulysses but there wasn't anything wrong with it. It was an average game or better and a pretty good launch title. I haven't played 2 or 3 so I can't really comment on those.

I don't hate the franchise itself, but rather two groups of people associated with it. The first group is the over-enthusiastic fanboys that make claims that the franchise is the best shooter to ever exist and things of that nature. On the flipside the group that's just as bad is all of the people that outright loathe the games for no fully justified reason. As the old saying goes "Don't hate the game, hate the player."

Halo gets reamed in general because it is popular. It's the ongoing trend of popular non-conformity. I.E. disagreeing with popular opinion because it makes you appear edgy, cool, or smart. In most cases, it makes you look like a tool, but don't let that get out - there are whole businesses built around the concept *cough* Hot Topic *chough*
That is the most hilarious sentence ever. Its really sad that its true.

This is mostly a personal issue, but I love competition...UNLESS its a first person shooter. And for most people, your worth as a gamer is measured by your competency in FPS's. So my love and talent for fighting games, actions, oldschool beat-em-ups and even party games more tuned to skill than luck all amount for nothing because I can't move a targeting reticle into place faster than the rest of my circle of friends.

I agree completely.

I don't really think that people hate Halo as such, just the fact that a lot of it's concepts (i.e recharging health) have been copied endlessly, usually poorly. In other words, people dislike the influence its had more than the game itself.

Agreed on all points, last paragraph especially.

Well, to paraphrase I believe Ayn Rand: The only thing more cowardly than a conformist is a popular non-conformist.

I do tend to dislike trends that really have their roots in specific games. Not every game needed to be a tactical shooter yet Counterstrike's runaway success pushed a lot of shooters in that direction, for better or worse. Not every game works with recharging health and yet Halo's sucess certainly helped spawn that particular movement. This doesn't mean I dislike halo or counterstrike - I just don't particularly care for the long term effects the games have had on the FPS genre.

The AI was great, the weapons were new and exciting, the environments were interesting
One of two things happened in this sentence. Either the person has a very low set of standards or the person thinks 'typical' is amazing.

Mainly, the above things you mentioned are all the reasons why I find Halo to be nothing bot an average game that came out when all console FPS games were really, really terrible.

Being a PlayStation follower, I don't really play Halo much (when I do it's at a mate's house). As with virtually all FPSes, I don't hate Halo. I'm just not bothered by it. I can't see what makes it so special, and why it warrants the attention it does. Same goes with Killzone 2.

I figured there was a chance this thread was already created, but considering how $h1tty my work 'net connection is, i wasn't going to start searching around for it. If it isn't on the first page, it doesn't exsist.

Besides, ultimately, hasn't every question been asked?
Ok you're in our house please try to do what we ask, read the guidelines here:http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.84119, Because if you keep doing something so stupid you'll get suspended.

Halo really is nothing special but many people say otherwise. The hate is coming from two things. One is it's undeserved praise and second, a popular game will always get a beat down simply because... it's popular.

I thought Halo 1 was good, when I was 12. As I matured I saw that the story was ripped off from just about every space marine movie out there. I think that it is a competent shooter, its fun if you have a few ours to kill, but there are so many better shooters out there. I like to play tactically, and Halo doesn't give me that. I like realistic shooters, and awesome RPGs. I don't want to take a 1000 bullets I want to take 2 or 3, one if its a head-shot. If you like it whatever, I just don't understand the obsession with it as "TEH BEST GAME EVAR!" As many people at my school hail it. I hate that it has also caused other companies to dumb their own games down to attract this new audience. I'm not saying that you are stupid, but older RPGs have more elements to them then they do today, and it wasn't too long after Halo's release that this started to happen. I'm just putting 2 and 2 together.

Take it easy on the freshmeat, not everyone who joins is as savvy with forums as the rest of us.

That being said, the Halo series just never got me that excited. I won't argue with it's success, so all I'll say is that it's a game that's just not for me.

Simple answer, Halo is vastly overrated to games like Half Life 2, Killzone, Battlefield series, Quake series, and any other first person shooting with a story-line, or even guns for that matter. (Problem solved...) Personally, even on PC i liked Mirrors Edge (MIRRORS EDGE!!!!!) more than any of the Halo games on any console so far.

However, this is most likely caused by me playing games on the PC that require strategy like... well... any fps series besides Halo and CoD... I'm tired of shooting galleries, which is why Far Cry 2 made me... well lets not go into that right now... (point A) but it involves a piece of rubber, and a few girls, maybe some water, lotion, a toilet, cheese, and blood. (and yes, its still what you were thinking at point A).
