I pitched to the Lead Game Designer to put in a Portal Gun into the game my team is currently working on. He denied my request.

I think Portal Guns should be in more games, maybe that why I'm not a Lead Designer yet.

Yes, because the one thing Portal was lacking was EXPLOSIONS! :p
(Sorry, had to get that out... hopefully that's gone in the next version.)

He didn't use mod tools, and isn't really a modder. He's a forger, and used Reach's Forge mode to make this. Should probably fix that.

Which makes it more impressive. Since he used the Standard Forge Mode to its fullest, and didn't hack or mod anything. Pretty damn amazing.
"Forger" means nothing to people who don't know Halo in a headline. "Modder," while not 100% accurate, means more in a general sense.

See Everything is better with Portals. that just made the halo franchise that much better... Still waiting for someone to put a Portal Gun in a shooter.... maybe with one where you could make portals big enough so you can drive cars through it.

... someone get to work on this RIGHT NOW!

seriously, if someone can make a game based entirely on the idea "hey what if this gun's bayonet was a chainsaw" I am pretty sure someone could create something pretty freaking sweet from the combat portal gun idea!

Really? Who'd he rip off?

EDIT: Okay, read further in the thread. On a site frequented by a lot of people who don't play the game, he's a modder because I honestly thought you meant he ripped the work off somehow.

Back in the day, I was contributor to several megawads and TCs for Doom, and even a couple of ports. Now, if someone not part of the community asked me, I'd just say I contributed to Doom mods. Because I somehow doubt that someone who was in grade school when Doom came out knows the differences between a megawad, a TC, and a port.

Now get off my lawn.:)

Eh, true. But "Modder" give the impression that he had to use external means to get this to happen in the game.

So far as what I've seen... was just in Forge mode. Being creative using settings that came with the game on the disk normally.

Anyways, while what he did was, cool, it's not as cool as this:

Modding. Its route is mod, for modifying. Forging is just a brand name for modifying (like band-aid for bandage). Hes a modder.

Maybe you should explain why forge doesn't count as using mod tools? Seems pretty similar to me.

That is awesome, I assuming one can download it via the guy's fileshare.

There always seems to be one person that has to point out something to try and bring the celebrating and wonderment down.

Who cares when it happened, it happened.

Well, that was surprising. Didn't expect to see the momentum trick (though to my defense, i haven't played a single Halo game in my life).
Quite awesome.

Its just a map editor. Mod tools allow you to create new skins, maps, ect. for games. Forge just lets you edit existing maps. Or in the case of Forge World(a level built specifically for Forge mode in Halo Reach), allows you to make maps out of miscellaneous items.

It was actually once possible to mod Halo 2, but that involved also modding the xbox. And Bungie didn't even mind at first. Then people started using those mods to cheat in matchmaking, so they and Microsoft had to start banning people for mods.

A map editor is a type of mod tool.

I guess it is to some people. But to me mod-tools let you add new models/textures/ect to the game, on top of changing the base game. Halo's Forge basically lets you place a bunch of items wherever you want.
