I don't see why people hate the campaigns in these games. Granted, 2 ended on a cliffhanger and 3 left open the possibility of a sequel that may/will never happen, but other than that I've always found the campaigns enjoyable.

Don't listen to some of the hate that goes on around here. It's a great series.

Halo 2 had my favorite campaign save for the cliffhanger ending but now that's a moot point with Halo 3 being out for years.

Reach annoyed me a bit since it retconned some stuff from the books but it's a still a great game, plus it has the most polished matchmaking/forge/theatre/firefight/custom games of most other games out there. If you don't like the gameplay fundamentally then no Halo is gonna change your mind but I'd recommend picking up at least Reach.

The single player compaign in Halo 2 is complete arse.

The rest of the Halo games are ok, with occasional detours into "pretty good" territory.
I disagree. Halo 2's campaign is far better than 3's, which is saying something.

Reach still has the best one though.
2's was amazing...right up until Chief says.....

"I'm finishing this fight"

The most annoying, angering moment ever. Period.

Reach's campaign has my favourite missions though.
But you see, the cliffhanger doesn't matter anymore. You can just get Halo 3 straight away and play it the moment you finish Halo 2. And if you're annoyed that it didn't explain anything that went on on Earth, get Halo: ODST.

Yes. Get it. Halo: ODST is short, but that matters not one ounce and it's the only criticism I can think of for it. It really is a totally brilliant game, just don't expect to spend too long in it.

Halo Reach is basically a best of collection of Halo stuff. It's got a very good matchmaking system, forge where Halo 3's glitches have been made into gameplay elements, brilliant custom games and fun firefight. And the campaign is pretty good too, copying most memoriable moments of each of the games and adding an awesome spacefight in the middle.

If I had to recomend one halo game, it would be this.

Also, don't buy ODST unless you get it for cheaps. Game sucks.
ODST was the start of Bungie's throwback to the original Combat Evolved which culminated in Reach (which I'm sure you will notice also took a rather large note from ODST in that you have a team with actually characters rather than faceless marines who serve as cannon fodder).

It had a superior campaign to Halo 3 and came with the entire H3 multiplayer, including all the DLC, plus the first version of Firefight (which again, built upon in Reach). I wouldn't recommend ODST over Reach, but to say it sucks puts you in the Captain's chair on the HMS Failboat.

Well, thanks you all for your opinions.

I am, however, not looking for a multiplayer shooter.

I want to experience the story.
And it seems like I'll be scanning the local video game farm for 1, 2 and 3 soon.

Quite right. I never care for games that are recommended to me based on their multiplayer.

Despite all the negativity I see around here, I have to say I still enjoy them. I've gravitated to preferring Halo 1 to 2, and 3 isn't as good as it could have been, but overall, still pretty good.

ODST has a nice Earth-centric take on things, with an excellent atmosphere.

I haven't played Reach yet, but from what I hear, especially from those on this site, it must have been made by Jesus. Usually the word "Halo" brings out a 50/50 split and causes vehemence of the most disturbing nature in both sides of the divide against the other, but I have only seen unanimous love for Reach (possibly the haters just didn't buy it).

The Halo games have largely good singleplayer. The story is roughly average, but is told very well (especially in Reach, which you really should get - the campaign is brilliant, I'm loving it in my second playthrough on Heroic). The gameplay is what sells it, though - the enemies are smart (again, especially in Reach) but most importantly, the game rarely forces you down one particular strategy to complete any mission. The levels are often very open (as in, you fight your way past one section and can go back there later if you want) and there are multiple ways to get past the enemies you encounter (I first noticed this on the Halo 3 level The Ark on Legendary, where I found myself trying out several different strategies against the enemies to see which one I liked best). Reach's campaign is once again the best example of this - indeed, it's the best of the Halo games, but the others are definitely no slouch either.

Seeing so many Halo topics, and so much praise (and of course whining) about Halo Reach, I think I might have caught the bug.

I played The original Halo, once.
For about an hour.

I got on the ring-thing and had to save some fellow marines, but the crappy vehicle section made me lose interest fast.

However, I heard that it gets better after a while. Especially the later instalments.
So, is it too late to start getting into Halo.
Is it worth getting Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST and Reach?
Halo 1 has best story, Halo 2 has a great campaign and the best multiplayer maps imo, Halo 3 is an amalgamation of the two but as good as neither, though it does come with a large graphics jump and some new features. ODST is a waste of time unless you play online because it has all the H3 expansion packs, campaign is mediocre but firefight can be fun. Don't have Reach yet 'cause student.

My brother got me Reach the other day (I have no idea why) and I already had Halo Wars, so I went out and picked up 1,2 and 3 for about $30 total. I was going to pick up ODST but the only copy they had had a generic case and no manual, so I figure I'll pick it up later. I've only played a couple of hours so far (Mass Effect 2 has drawn me into its web) but for $30 even if I just get a few more hours out of it, I'm doing better than the industry standard of dollars to time played.

Sure is a lot of Halo hate in here....

Anyway, if you're that interested in the story, then start with the first Halo and work your way through the series. I will say that 2 kinda drags near the middle, but picks up speed by the end. Reach is most definitely the best in the series, followed closely by Combat Evolved, and then ODST.

Which brings me to my question, why is there so much hate for ODST?

Fix'd. But seriously, what was so bad about ODST?
i would also like to ask this. i mean it was nice to play a guy you couldnt go up and just meelie throgh the whole game with (yes you can do that on normal and hard, ledgendary not so much in the other halo games save reach of course:) or was it the fact that the story was good? Now please understand that i love halo and i play them all regualarly but i can admit halo has a very limited story unless you read the books. now we get odst which is by far the best game of the serise (save reach of course:) it was all good and if you didnt like it i just cant understand why so please try to explane it to me.

My Halo experience was about as deep as yours. I enjoyed the first game, but it wasn't anything life altering. I skipped 2/3/ODST (though I heard ODST was fun) mostly on friend's recommendations.

I picked up Reach to have some fun with some of the friends I knew were going to pick it up, and it's leaving me with a similar feeling to my original experience - it's no more or less than I was expecting - to quote Dwight Schrute, "good not great." But, that's what I was expecting. If you're not wanting to spend hours playing multiplayer though, I'd just let it pass by and not pick it up.

-If you have a PS3 I'd recommend Uncharted 1 & 2 , if you haven't picked them up, for a really fun story (plus they're super cheap now).

Most people seem to ***** about is not being master chief, and while I like the big guy for saving the universe and all, his story is finished, so it was good they got new blood to focus on.

in my humblest opinion, yes, you should try them out,I enjoyed all of them although the 3rd's one ending was a bit meh and ODST was too dark for my liking(not dark as in, scary but dark as in...it was always really dark)
I agree with this completely, and say to the OP, that he should definitely try all of the games all the way through. If you're unsure, rent them or borrow them from a friend. If you like them, then for heaven's sake give Bungie your money and buy them :D.

However, I do have to disagree with the disliking Halo 3: ODST for being 'dark'. Using the VISR system to see, I actually really liked that aspect. The whole point of the Mombasa Streets section is that you are alone, trying to find your team. You're outnumbered, outgunned, having to creep around. And it's a dark night which means in a real situation you'd be jumping at shadows, trying desperately to get through the night in one piece. It was atmospheric, and I liked that whole idea. I'll admit it was slightly annoying in some of the alleys at times, but overall it really made the game feel awesome. That being said, I'm one of the 'suckers' who felt the game deserved full price and ranks it as a full game worthy of being classed alongside the main series, rather than just being a spin-off. So maybe that's just me... :p

No, I quite agree with you. I feel as if people who say ODST is nothing more than DLC probably haven't played it.

Wait you didn't even beat the first one? Come on you missed some of the best parts! Play the whole game. Then play the next one. Then play the next one. Then play ODST if you feel compelled to do so. Then play Reach. Don't bother with Halo Wars. Pretty meh.

Skip straight to Reach I'd say. It's a prequel so your not missing out on any story and the others feel really outdated now. Sorry Halo fans but it's the truth.
