GOOD! I've not followed the series since Combat Evolved, but just reading about and seeing reviews of Halo: Reach, I'm actually considering stealing off with a mate's 360 to play it on.

Has anyone else felt this way about it? I think it might have something to do with the customising of the armour, also it's the only Halo game where I've been mildly moved by any of the cutscenes. Although you get to play as a super powered Space Marine in a team of other super powered Space Marines, this time it seems they're given a little character other than 'total badassery'.

EDIT

Halo: Reach owners who have managed to pull themselves away from their 360 long enough to read this, am I right in thinking it's Combat Evolved, upgraded?

Yeah, it's about fighting a hopeless war you know you can't win, and even though that ad had no gameplay footage, it got me a little psyched. Yay hype machine! I haven't played a halo since 1, but I might check this one out at some stage.

Also, no flood. That ruined the first game for me. Utterly, utterly ruined it.

It wasn't the idea of the flood I hated, but they were so boring! I mean it gives you interesting, varied enemies like elites, hunters, and jackals [sub]and grunts >>[/sub] and then goes OK TOO MUCH FUN, TIME FOR ZOMBIES.

Wat.

It was good but was far too short. I was kind of hoping they'd do a massive epic as their farewell to Halo.

Yeah, grunts were a little boring, but I let that slide. Having an interesting shield mechanic with the elites (is that what they're called) meaning you gotta keep up the offensive, mix up your energy and bullet weapons; it was some interesting encounters.

Then the flood, who were just...

No, I have words for it.

Halo: Reach is brilliant. It was hard for me to get excited about a new Halo game given I've played them all so much, but Reach really hits all the right spots. There is so much that is familiar but all the familiar stuff they've tweaked. All of the enemies are vicious now and behave slightly differently to what you're used to. Everything is more brutal; even the pissy Covenant drop ships have a cannon that blows the crap out of you.

God, that thing's a *****.
Only played about 6 hours so far, but I'm lovign it. The Covenant are challenging and tough to fight in a good way, especially the ELites. They're my favourite videogame enemy by far. I'm playing on heroic difficulty, and I actually feel like the Elites are my equal, not just a slightly tougher grunt.

Multiplayer is unsurprisingly fantastic as well. There's just something so satisfying about Halo's gameplay that I can't put my finger on.

Also, I'm not one to give a shit about the Halo story. I couldn't care less what became of Master Chief (hence my lack of 360 to follow the story), but I'm wanting to know what happens in Reach.

I'm interested in the Halo story, for the first time ever, it acutally seems worth taking the time to absorb it all rather than run around shooting shit up instead of listening. I've made complaints in the past, generic Space Marine shooter blah blah blah bland story blah. I hold to that (because that's how Halo 2 felt for me). But Halo: Reach doesn't look like it's going to get the same stick from me.

I only saw a couple of the campaign levels, and it looked pretty good.
Looks to me like another Halo game, not great but still good.

I started playing Reach today, actually paying to rent it instead of just waiting and renting it for free in a few weeks. I realized, what have I got to lose? Play it with my friends, break the grip WoW has on me a bit, ect. And from the first mission, I'm enjoying it.

In the opening mission, the scene goes seemlessly from cutscene to gameplay, the covenent smashing in and attack me, and instead of just seeing my action self take over and only get to watch from a camera view, which I liked

So far the story is Halo, which is only okay in the Halo sense, but I'm enjoying it a lot so far and can't wait till it's cheap and I have internet to play it on...lol

Absolutely; they've really done a number on the Elites. They'll single you out and try and bludgeon you to death or flush you out with plasma grenades (with disturbing accuracy). If the tide turns against them they'll fall back to reinforcements. I've chased them down a few times only to be ambushed by said Elite and a fresh wave of Grunts; usually ending in my death.

Noble Team are also, surprisingly for a FPS, useful. They'll pitch in, draw fire and generally watch your back.

Game is good, weapons suck, suck hard. No dual wielding, no beam rifle, no battle rifle, and the only "new weapons" you really see in multiplayer are the needle rifle(AWFUL), plasma rifle(never use it, garbage), and the DMR(or as I call it nerfed br, which just doesn't feel right). At least the buggers expload if you headshot them.

Meh, the multi-player can go shove itself. I didn't like it in Halo 2 so I won't like it now right. I'm more concerned about the campaign.

Ah the campaign, I beat that today on normal and died 20 times, mostly in a corridor with suicide grunts and their grenades bouncing everywhere, and against a wraith, which actually tries to run you over now(I had no big guns). That said, I can't imagine how hard legendary is.

Well, I just got it today and I haven't played multiplayer yet. I personally prefer campaign most of the time. After playing a few missions, I can't help but feel Halo 3's campaign was better. That's not to say that Reach has a bad campaign. As far as multiplayer goes (what most people are getting it for), I played the multiplayer beta and have seen a lot of gameplay and I'm pretty pleased.

You reckon? I've always thought Halo 3 had the weakest campaign of the series (which isn't saying it's bad). It really trailed off in quality toward the end.

I'm glad they've ditched the dual wielding. It was weak at best in other Halo games.

I watched The Escapist review today and from the sound of things, the direction is more in line with Halo 1 which I am happy about. I won't buy the game because I would not play it enough to justify the cost and don't have Live, so this Friday I'll give it a rent. I like the attention towards story and characters (that I don't want to choke) because it looks like the game will provide motivation to continue along and follow the events with some level of interest. Single Player has always been priority for me, so I find about any progress taken by Reach to improve upon Halo 2 and 3. The health and weapon changes to fit more into the Halo 1 style are also a plus!

The grunts were the most fun in Halo 1, I felt, because they were like little blood water-balloons ha ha! I found the enemies in Halo 2 and 3 less fun though, even the little bullet-sponges. I like the direction Halo Reach appears to be going with the Elites where they are badass aliens who are the strategic leaders spearheading the fight. When Halo 2 (and later 3) had them speaking English with that horrible voice, they died to me.

Granted, the Covenant enemies were never in the same league of awful as the Flood. The CAPS portion by Serenegoose sums it up nicely: The Flood are killjoys. I can't say what was worse, the Gravemind or fighting those insipid and pestilent rotting vegetables Flood.
So good job Reach on (hopefully) erasing the latter two games from my memory banks.
