Well I heard good things, so I decided to watch the first few episodes, before I knew it I had blown through all of season 1. I think it's one of the last few good cartoons in existence today.

Call me late to the party, but I saw yesterday that every episode of Mlp:FiM was uploaded commercial free to YouTube, so I decided to open up my personal Pandora's box and watch the first few episodes. Little did I know that I had gone too deep, and now I'm have to watch the next episode regardless of any feelings towards doing so.
Same thing happened to me, but then I finished the first season. I haven't seen anything of the second, save Discord.

So, Escapists, describe how you got hooked on the world of ponydom. How did you watch it, when did you watch it, and why.

btw Twilight Sparkle is by far the best pony. Deal with it.
Welcome to the herd!
XD

My story is much like yours.
I went "what's all this pony nonsense on The Escapist?", so I checked it out, and there's just no turning back.
The show is awesome. Not in any sort of ironic way. Not because I'm not "supposed to" like it.
It's just an incredibly well-made show that represents an incredibly unexpected and refreshing change of pace for my normally bitterness-saturated, world-weary heart, which tends to have very little faith in humanity.
It's just so damn pure hearted and good natured, and makes me somewhat optimistic that I'm not the only one out there who really appreciates and lives by the ideas championed by the show. After all, I can't be the only Brony watching for these reasons. Can I? <_< o_O?

Now the question is, will you be a casual Brony like me (I'll watch every episode, admit to liking it if asked, discuss it when it comes up, accept that it's not for everyone, don't go around spamming ponies, and I rarely think about ponies without some sort of external prompt), or one of the super-devoted lunatics that spam ponies everywhere, think about the show/characters all the time, try and convert everyone, and never shut up about it, thereby giving the rest of us a reputation as obsessed crazy people?
;)

I'm not sure who best pony is.
I'm just like Twilight.
Girl I love is like Twilight, Pinkie, Applejack, and Fluttershy all rolled into one.
Rainbow Dash is a badass, but a little abrasive.

The only one I can rule out is Rarity.

In a word:

I could psychoanalyze for hours about all the reasons I enjoy watching the show, but at the end of the day, I just like taking a break from my own cynicism.

I first thought it was a bit odd the amount of pony related talk happening on the Escapist. Then I found out the show was done by the same person that did Fosters ( another "kid" show written well enough for all ages to enjoy) so I decided to check it out. Turned out both seasons were available on netflix.
The characters have personality, the stories are well written, the music is fun and the young girl target audience is treated with respect. I watched every episode and, while I do not now consider myself a bronie, I will defend fans of the show because it is a good show, plain and simple. I think some people obsess over it a bit too much but hey the same thing can be said of Star Wars and a host of other things.

... And for the record, Fluttershy is obviously the best pony.

Firstly, Rarity is the best pony.
Secondly.. I have no idea why but it normally manages to cheer me up when I'm down :$
You sir have awesome taste, have this video.

I knew about the show before it was even on the air, I would see lil snippets of it on this uverse channel that would show upcoming things. Anyway, it looks interesting and having Faust involved with it peaked my curiosity but when I tried to actually watch it, I coudln't. But I did really enjoy some of the vids and art the fandom made, that in turn got my friend interested so he finally sat down and watched it then on a night of drinking he got me to actually watch some of it all the way though and I got a favorite pony and I ended up liking the show, it wasn't till I finished all of season 2 that I went full brony. After it was over I felt a loss, you know the feeling when you finish a really good book, well I got that so boom, brony.

Rarity is best pony.

Cool, as all the other gents have said, welcome to the herd.
How I got into the show? It was about a year and a half ago at this point, in the spring of 2011 I think, I was a senior in High School. It kept popping up everywhere, more specifically threads asking about if it was some elaborate online joke that people liked it or if it was actually good. After a while I ended up watching a few episodes on Youtube and I enjoyed it. So that is how I got into the show.

Also Applejack is best pony.

I got sick of hearing about ponies and went to youtube to see what all the hype was about. Was a brony by the end of the day.

It happens. There's no shame in it. Welcome to the herd.
Must resist urge to investigate what the deal is about..... curioristy taking control.... err one episode couldn't hurt, right?

captcha: army training, sir! - are you implying that its propaganda captcha??

BTW; I think you are approaching the question of "best pony" incorrectly. I tend to think
of it as Fwuttershy is the most "Awww" pony; Twilight is the smartest pony: Rarity is the
most glam pony; Rainbow Dash is the most Awesome pony; Pinkie is the most Fun pony; Luna
is the most "needs a hug" pony; Celestia is the most Majestic pony etc...etc...

Twilight is da best of all da ponys.

Careful now, I'm sure Miss Twilight can do the calculation that proves that pursuing
that line could decrease the quotient of love & friendship.
And you know what we have to do if that happens......

From what I hear it sneaks up on everyone. I can't even remember how it began - where my curiosity led me from - but before I knew it I was awake through the night watching a marathon stream leading up to the premiere of A Party of One.

Just don't go nuts. Thankfully the crazies have been relatively quiet as of late, though. And for what it's worth: Sweetie Belle is best pony.

A little girl I was babysitting was watching the old 80s cartoon and it was physically painful for me to be in the same room. I knew about FiM from teh internets and looked up an episode for her to watch

and then I watched one with her

and then we spent the day after easter sitting in a fort, eating chocolate and watching the entire series.

Now there is music from the show on my ipod and I'm part of the herd.

Congratulations.

Why you had to shout this out on an internet forum puzzles me but I'm happy for you.
Hey, I did leave it with a question to provoke discussion. Too bad the universal answer seems to be "laughed at bronies, got curious, became brony". At least I tried.

Once you get past the opening theme song, it's already too late. You become Pinkie Pie's slave forever.

I sat through the first five episodes.

I'm not saying it's a bad kids show, and I'd recommend it to my nieces once they're older. But, really? The hype is still beyond me.

I feel it would be more fair to say that I just don't damn get it.
