So I recently got a job as a security guard at a construction site at nights and I need something to kill the time. I'm looking for something on the cheaper side that's only a couple hundred dollars with a lot of fairly cheap games to keep me going. My shifts are twelve hours at a time so I need some serious time sinks. My favorite genres are Action, RPG and some times strategy games. Any buddy have any suggestions?

For sheer choice of games the 3DS is what you want to go with, hands down. You not only have access to all current and new 3DS titles, but all original DS games as well. And I know the DS and 3DS has plenty of action and RPG games. I don't know about RTS games, but the 3DS has the largest library available of all current handheld systems so your chances are best with that one.

And if you do get it, I HIGHLY recommend spending the extra few dollars on the 3DS XL. Longer battery life, much larger screen, and easier to hold. Worth every penny.

3DS is pretty much a haven for RPGs and turn based strategy games so yes, it would make a good choice. If you've got a decent phone you might also consider getting a portable bluetooth controller for it as that will also give you access to a huge library of classic console and handheld games plus a growing number of good ports and dedicated titles developed for mobile.

3DS strictly for games.

PSV for multimedia, if you can afford the stupidly high cost of the memory cards.

Maybe even get a tablet or something?

I'm going to go full non-filthy casual and suggest this, IMO the best handheld system out there.

Man I remember back in the day when it was still in development being super excited and intent on getting one of those except they took forever before they had a proper release and I eventually forgot about it. Looking at it now they seem to perform pretty well considering the specs but they are ridiculously expensive [https://www.dragonbox.de/index.php?id_product=112&controller=product] compared to simultaneously cheaper and more powerful alternatives available today.

I was thinking maybe a tablet since I like to draw a lot so it might be a good thing for me. Any suggestions on a reasonably powerful and priced one?

Thanks for the feed back everyone, I get paid on Wednesday so I was gonna head to the local independent game store and see if they have a good price on a used 3ds and what games are available.

Maybe a NVidia Shield Tablet [http://store.nvidia.com/store/nvidia/en_US/custom/pbPage.ShieldTabletPage] would work for you. Pretty high specs, comes with a mid-tier stylus (probably the best stylus that doesn't have any wireless technology) and with a controller you could play all the mobile ports and emulators.

The 600mhz version is 239 euros, about the same price as a PSvita and can be used for other things other than a table coaster :p

The Shield also looks awesome, especially the Portable version. I didn't expect it to be so reasonably priced. Streaming also widens the selection of games you can play... Damn, I want one now :p
