Guy Fawkes attempted to destroy the English parliament to implement a brutal, iron fisted Catholic regime.

A hero he is not.

You know even if parliament was corrupt during his time period, I still think it's odd that you guys celebrate a man's attempt to blow it up.

So what exactly is the niche of the holiday? Everyone dresses up and causes civil distress? If thats the case im onboard! If its a day to sit around and gripe about how the plight of the english statesman is deplorable given the socioeconomi... BLERG! you get the idea.

So how is it your supposed to celebrate the holiday?

The day would be a lot more fun if that was true. I'm all for a day of anarchy. Even if its just to remind us why the government ain't so bad.

Yeah he was a bit of a whacko himself. Wanting to start a brutal Catholic rule over England. but gg to him for trying anyway. Will be watching V for Vendetta tomorrow. I wonder if 4chan people will try to do something in celebration of their favorite holiday

I think it's celebrated cause it failed and Guy Fawkes was a complete nutter.

Well I know why its celebrated, I was wondering how its celebrated. Do they have parties? Do people get together? Is there special food for this 'holiday'? Do they set off fireworks? Do they burn Guy Fawkes in effigy? I don't know and I was looking to find out.

Never did quite understand what was to be celebrated about it. Dude tries blowing stuff up, and gets caught.

Oh well, guess I'm just too tired to comprehend much right now. Just stopped by for the obligatory:

They do generally burn 'im in effigy.

Makin' it rather odd that the OP considers it to be in his honor.

Wikipedia tells me that the holiday was established to celebrate the END of the Gunpowder Plot - to wit, the discovery and arrest of the anarchical terrorist behind it. But I guess that where someone strives against any sort of ruling body, it's all too easy to make the next logical leap and turn him into a hero fighting against injustice; a Robin Hood, as it were. 'Cause everyone knows that all ruling bodies are corrupt, horrible things, right?

In the comic book, V was more seen as the lesser of two evils unlike the movie. Which is worse, anarchy or a fascist government? While the movie which wasn't bad pretty much took away all the moral ambiguity.

Note, I know nothing about the real Guy Fawkes and it is premature and maybe foolish to celebrate a terrorist because of a fictional story (which took place centuries after Guy Fawkes lived) especially when in the original fictional story the one wearing a Guy Fawkes's mask was still a jackass just less of a one than the government he was fighting against.
