It's nice to see a FPS outside the military genre. But still, it was the first time a Doom game bored me (and I played Doom 3!). Probably the pacing didn't click on me.

Whoa buddy, slow down, I freaking love DOOM and will even say it's important that we got it in some way but I don't know if it's as good or as important as you say it is.

Still though, happy one-year.

Thanks for reminding about this game, it seems I've found what to play for the next several weeks

I enjoyed the game a lot. It's a very undiluted experience that don't waste time. The game has excellent pacing to complement the satisfying gameplay and it keeps you in a loop of gradual escalation that mixes new weapons and baddies in different constellations so that the action remains fresh. There is a clear formula and pattern here that decidedly works in the game's favor. If it was just the tight and responsive gameplay it could have easily become a gradual boring slog but it's also structurally very well designed so that it kept me entertained to the end. The game also ends at just the right length not overstaying it's welcome but not feeling short either.

Doom harkens back to simpler times when games were easy to pick up and hard to put down and where serious narrative wasn't of much importance. The gameplay, the structure and the self-referential humor makes it that Doom understands all those things and it's this clear vision that makes the game all the better for it. It's a definite return to form but updated with modern finesse and production values.

Like B-Cell said [but not in so over the top degree] Doom *2016* is an awesome game.
Love the simple, but effective opening.
The new redesign of the Demon is refreshing and not something complex to the eye.
The wepons are good.
Surprisingly the Lore of the game is really interesting and deep! Never expected that.
The GLORIOUS Boss Fights!!!! Cyberdemon fight was f*cking awesome

However even me I can see its flaws.
At some point the Arena fights get really boring near the end. Very glad for the awesome Boss Fight the game throw you at the end.
Also I wish if it wasn't only Arena fights, but be enemies all around the levels as well. like in classic FPS games [or like the old DOOM in other words].
The Music was suitable for the fights you had, but at some point the tracks was uninspiring....

I appreciate it's existence but I didn't care for it. It's melee mechanics threw me right out of the experience. Having to knock them down to 'glow mode' to get life or whatever out of every enemy is very much quick time events to me.

Plus I heard it got DRM that makes so you have to be online to play it, I hope that isn't true.

For me to consider it a masterpiece, it had to do something in particular that was amazing, which could even include a special boss fight. I'd rather celebrate Undertale or something.
I can say for sure the Boss Fights are fun to play. I am not saying they are perfect, but for sure there are some shining moments which make you stop shooting for a moment to do something else to prevent to take damage.

You mean Crash, right? Not a canon character, but yes, there is already a Doom-Girl.

I'm not going to harp on anyone for their opinion (well, mostly), but this contradiction caught my eye:

Yeah...

Looking at these two comments kinda solidifies why I feel the narrative of the game felt so lacklustre for me - it's trying to have its cake and eat it. It presents little insights at the history of Hell, the Doom Slayer, Argent D'Nur, etc., but does it in a haphazard manner that feels like everything was made up as it went along. Even the tone feels inconsistent - within the first segment of the game, we see the Doom Slayer get pissed off after seeing a human corpse, while Hayden tries to justify his actions. Not long after that, it's revealed the UAC is a cartoony-esque cult, holograms cheerfully talking about soul reaping. Say what you will about the Dooms that came prior, but while there's a significant shift in tone between Doom 1/2 and 3, they at least stayed consistent within the scope of their own games.

While I treat Quake and Doom as sharing an overall multiverse, Crash's protoge named "Doom" (go figure) isn't the Doom Slayer. One can make the theory that the Doom Slayer is indeed the marine from the original games, picking off where Doom 64 left off, but I don't agree with the theory. I find it more likely that the Slayer is a denizen of Argent D'Nur.

Would a "Doom Girl" make that much of a difference? Not really, but it's telling that female characters didn't appear in the Doom series until Doom 3, and there's never been any female soldiers, zombified or otherwise. It's good to know that in the 22nd century, the marines are a boys-only club. And so are the Night Sentinels apparently. Before people get any ideas, no, the lack of female characters in Doom isn't sexist, but variety is the spice of life and all that.

Shhhh, don't say you like a game that's popular, the frequent users will use that as an excuse to attack you later.

From a rare serious point in response to B-Cell:

How did it define a generation? Wouldn't there need to be a significant attempt to copy or adopt features for this to be true? What games clearly have been inspired and shaped by doom, 1 year later?
Shh... don't burst the kid's bubble. Next are you going to tell him there is no Santa?
Uh, spoiler alert. Christmas is ruined now.

Also, isn't it funny that B-Cell can put down our likes but the second we call him out on it the mods jump on us like a pack of lions on a dying gazelle? Fuckers got an in.

I picture B-Cell, sitting in his underpants, alone in his living room, with a party hat on, sadly blowing a party whistle, cutting a cake that says "RIP AND TEAR" with a marzipan Doom Marine on top.
This is /thread worthy.

Switch onesie pajamas in for underpants and it's perfect.

It was okay.

I like how it slowly gave you new weapons, and new enemy types were always appearing as the game went on, but towards the end it A) got a bit overwhelming, trying to juggle so many different weapons, whilst dodging projectiles and constantly moving, and B) a little bit tedious, as you realised that the level design was little more than hallway - arena - hallway - arena.

I really enjoyed the music.

I mean, fuckin' unf.

Gameplay's what I expected from a DOOM game. It's...well, DOOM:

Basic, Brutal, and Bloody. All I really wanted from it.

Wait, what? When did that happen?

I've received a mark for saying "ugh" at the start of a post, but that seems to have reverted. Going by this thread, I've criticized B-cell's rationale, but my 'bar of health' is still clean.

From where is she? From the novel?
http://quake.wikia.com/wiki/Crash

If you're thinking of the novels, there's Arlene from the original novels, and Maria from the Doom 3 novels. If you're thinking of reading them, the Doom 3 novels are relatively decent, the original novels...aren't (to put it mildly).

No, from Quake 3 Arena:

IF we take her story as canon, Crash was Doom's military instructor. So basically maybe she get aged and she is dead or a badass military granny.

Celebrate what it was, not necessarily what it is. Isn't that the point of an anniversary?

Wait a minute...

(Browses wiki)

Seriously? The Doomguy's name is actually "Doom?" I mean, huh?

Okay, maybe it's a callsign or something, and not his actual name, and...ah, forget it. This is Id we're talking about.
