Hard, but fair... what is the hardest game you have played.

Unoriginal, but regardless. I Wanna be the Guy, and Ikaruga. Man, so much time invested in those two, and so little done.

Left 4 Dead can be hard on Expert if you aren't working as a good team. But the hardest game for me would be GTA 4. Not hard to beat, just hard to bear as you struggle through the annoying campaign and crappy multiplayer...

Eh...I wouldn't exactly call that one fair.

DMC 3 gets my vote. That game was so damn fun to me, that the difficulty never frustrated me.
those bosses where such bastards.
but dante & vergil were way to cool to make it matter.

special edition! fot the win!

Devil May Cry 4. On the harder difficulties, all enemies are so strong it's insane.

But then you just switch to easy and breeze through the whole thing.
you shouldn't play on DMD* mode. the fun disappears and you'll get buttfucked by demons.

i heavenly enjoy the difficulty that comes before DMD though.

Easily I wanna be the guy, no game will be as hard as that game ever, if you beat, your name needs to go down in platforming history as one of the greatest platformers ever, I only get to mecha birdo then got stuck.

Unfair: I Wanna Be the Guy isn't supposed to be remotely fair. It's part of the homage to ridiculous older games, taken up to 11. Cut-scenes are skippable though. They're Delicious Fruit, not apples.

Ninja Gaiden. Just Ninja Gaiden.

Most shoot-em ups, especially the Danmaku kind. Raiden for requiring superhuman reflexes. Touhou games for example, manage to cross the line. If you're good at them, they're a fair challenge, but some of the later bosses are just absurd.

Fair: It's been mentioned already, but Monster Hunter. Really the only things cheap in that series is the frustratingly limited storage space in the older ones, and the hitboxes on a couple of the bosses. (Plesioth, you know what you did)

A lot of Roguelikes (Nethack, ADOM, Elona) are absolutely brutal unless you know exactly what you're doing. Once you get past the vertical wall of the learning curve and stop doing stupid things, you have a much better chance of getting through.

Happy first post to Me.

Well...I'll say Resonance of Fate for the moment, but now that I've figured out how everything works, it really isn't that hard. If I had answered this question when I still only had about 10 hours clocked on my file, then I would've described the game as cruel and brutal.

I have yet to play Demon's Souls for this very reason. I own it, but I'm afraid of how badly it's going to beat me. Dx

I'm really happy to see God Hand get mentioned in here. That game is a particular favorite for me. The combat system in that game was probably my favorite of all time. Really felt awesome learning counters/dodging attacks.

The final world of Bomberman 64 is oddly satisfying. It's the only part of the game where they expect you to know how to bombjump on normal difficulty (unless you're going for all custom pieces) and it's hard as hell sometimes. But damn it's fun.
I never, ever, ever beat that sphinx boss underwater (Boulban or something?) that shit was hard! Only game I've never finished due to difficulty.
That would be Bomberman Hero and that game is terrible.
Shit of course my bad haha, I finished 64... Eventually...

i once beat bahamut in FFVIII while so drunk that i am preatty sure i passed out in the middle of it and regained concioussness just in time to heal up and beat him. i also found 7 gold skulltullas in LoZ:OoT with the sound broken on my N64. that was a lot of slowly crawling through every dungeon looking for anywhere i thought the programmers might hide one of those things.

The original Ninja Gaiden on the NES.

Hard as hell, but if you are inspired, you can literally run through the entire game without having to stop except for, maybe, five times in its entirety.

Sorry about that, but most modern games don't even compare in terms of fair dificulty, mostly because they are afraid to put off players of this generations.

And don't even play the nostalgia card here, because I only started playing this game two years ago.
