Hard Mario games?

Okay so at one point I started this topic about what the hardest Final Fantasy games were and I decided to take this idea a little further. Now, before this starts I'll say that I've never played many Mario games. Simply because it didn't piqued my interest enough.

So my question now is: What are some of the hardest Mario games you've played? Now, if you were lazy you have forgotten to read the previous block of text; I don't know if there are hard Mario games out there simply because I haven't tried them all. I'd love to see the answers on this one ^^

IIRC some modders designed some "hard" mario level packages that you can run to get a real challenge. The official games themselves are not that hard, the most difficult sequences were easily handled once you'd understood the timing(they wanted these games to have broad appeal). The "hard" mario levels required technical skill in performing the correct manuevers in addition to simply recognizing the required timing.

...I have no idea where you can find them. I'm assuming there are youtube clips you can dig up. I'll also assume these were japanese people.

I found Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels pretty hard, I didn't play it that much though, I like how they are all a very medium difficulty saves the rage

SMB2 (The Lost Levels in the States) is SO hard, Japan wouldn't let us play it, they gave us a different game with Mario painted on it. It can now be found in Mario All-Stars for the SNES.

In the 3-D games, completing them is easy, but if you decide to go for all of the stars, it gets more challenging. That is Mario's specialty. Easy enough for the newbs, but can get hard enough for the hardcore fans.
