Hard time not playing without cheats

(Obviously I'm talking about single player experience)
I think my love for cheat started way back then with game genie, where you could basically do almost anything with game, doing a complete playthrough of SMB 3 with only frog and whatnot.
Cheats were always something I loved, alwasy permitting to break the rules in games.
Like in most Elder scrolls I removed the tiredness to find the npc to sell stuff, I just add gold to myself and such.
In today's times, I feel like that most of the time I use cheat to mostly skip time sink.
Or game I would want to see the end without having to spend hundred of hours and playthrough (mostly rogue like here)
But with that I feel like removing those "time sink" its make the game sometimes way shorter and I became "burned" off game way quicker (become boring, no more "real" challenge and such)
So what are your view on cheats and did you had fun using those?

I will always endeavour to finish the game first without cheats. However on subsequent runs, everything is fair game.

I openly admit I am a piece of crap when it comes to Star raft and Rts games. I played the campaigns for Star raft 2 with godmode on because I just wanted to see the story. Not bust of balls on Rts concepts I don't understand.

I also did the same thing with Fallout 4 because that game is shit. But I was invested enough to wanna find my kid.

As much as The Total War series (and mods) are great fun, I always cheat in the campaigns to give me money and instantly build the biggest cities, simply because I like the battles but want them to have some meaning. Some of the mods I play (Third age and Roma Surrectum) also just feel like a slog in campaign, and spams the AI with loads of full stack armies, so I personally think it's pretty fair game.

Overall though, I do like to finish a game at least once without cheats. It's a shame cheats don't seem to be too much of a thing these days, as in the PS2 era games with cheat codes significantly extended the fun and game length of many titles for me.

I generally don't use them, because I've yet to find any games that I needed them to beat the game. I usually only play on normal, so it's usually not a big deal either way.

However I don't have an issue with cheats. Sometimes they are fun, and occasionally I'll turn one on to run around having fun in a game i've already played.

yeah, for me, its extended the life of some game so much, but shortened others. its a weird swing.
my most recent choice to "cheat" through stardew valley, because I couldn't stand much of the "grind", shortened it maybe too much, but I guess I have to live with that

I do that too. But not gold (because if you're adding items to yourself anyway, then gold basically has no value, since instead of buying something with gold you might as well just add the item directly to yourself), I add other unimportant miscellaneous items to myself just to complete those stupid fetch/collection quests, like collecting 9 rat's tails and returning them to an NPC and such.

The only game I have really cheated with recently would be Stellaris. It's a space based empire building game for those unfamiliar with it. Anyway, every game I have started, it has always placed me next to the most powerful faction on the map. After I claim a few systems, I get a declaration of war from them, and they send in their 33k strength fleet, and obliterate my meager 1k strength fleet. So I turn on no damage, and now my 1k fleet shreds them very slowly.

It's fine for people to play a game how they want, but cheating in any way removes legitimacy.
I think for an honest run of a game, like a playthrough of Fallout 4 or something, the only acceptable cheats are to compensate for failures or oversights in the game design.
I can attest to having enabled noclip several times when I get stuck in a wall, manually progressing a quest because there was a logic error in it, and turning on god mode because I randomly died of hunger, thirst, and tiredness when loading back to a previously fine save.

I play a lot of games for the challenge of it, or mod them to make it as such though - so I recognize that most people probably don't agree.

I don't cheat, unless a game drives me into a corner and there's no other solution.
Like using the "kill" console command on those goddamn Fallout 3 Reavers.

I like to use cheats in games like Final Fantasy 8 where the gameplay is purposefully designed to waste your time.
Also, if I have to repeat the same section of a game for 100 times (I've got 2 jobs right now while simultaneously trying to kickstart my dream career so I can't be bothered to master difficult games anymore).

I prefer not to use cheats on any game (Retro or otherwise) because I'm a masochist, however I'm not against people using them either *shrug*
TIME FOR A SECOND SQUAD WIPE, XCOM LONG WAR! YEAH! FUCK ME HARDER!

I'm kind of in the same group. I might cheat in something that I felt was a load of shit, (I have to kill 65,340,285 boars? Seriously... Fuck that.) but beyond that I don't often want to cheat. Even in MP Co-op.

Twilight Princess (Gamecube and Wii) - I give myself the biggest wallet because I hate hunting the bugs AND because I hate leaving Rupees behind. I still leave plenty of Rupees behind though, even with the biggest wallet.

Super Mario Sunshine - Unlimited lives. The reason is because there isn't a penalty for losing all your lives except having to travel back to the retro levels. It just saves time and in the end you still have to beat the retro levels with skill (and luck). I don't cheat to give myself 120 Shines, that would remove the point of the game. However, I only used unlimited lives for one playthrough because I haven't attempted 120 Shines since and that was about 10 years ago.

Ocarina of Time/a Link between Worlds - I give myself 100 Skulltulas/100 Maiamais. They are tedious to collect.

Animal Crossing (Gamecube) - There are 5 NES games that are on the disc but there is no legit way to get them. Action Replay to the rescue.

Not counting exploits, like sniping Souls bosses or getting them stuck on the scenery? I remember using cheats on Age of Empires, Desperados and Phanom Menace.

I remember the buggy ones in the Presidential Metro that have their physics going nuts. Bullets fly right through, and it seems like the kill command is legitimately the only way to get rid of them. You can however, still shoot them in VATS, with like a 14% hit chance. It's quite tough but very doable.

I suppose to point I'd like to reiterate, is that even in the most ridiculous situation, you can find new accomplishments in playing against all odds. Why cheat when it ruins a different kind of fun. :p

In some games, yes I cheat. Like Terraria, I do use a character trainer at times because I don't have the time to mine endlessly, but I won't overcheat and just give myself max stat gear or anything. Just enough mats to craft a decent upgrade.
Or in certain RPGs, if I paint myself into a corner and don't want to redo some sections of gameplay, I'll level up slightly to get comparable stats. But usually I won't cheat if I can help it in most games.

I have used cheats/exploits/mods frequently to alter games and gameplay and think the ability to tailor games to our own preferences is an amazing way to increase replayability. I like to play things at least once the way the developers intended, with some few exceptions over the years, but I do like being able to play games in other ways too.

My favourite thing is NG+, the ability to restart a game with all the perks/abilities/gear from a prior playthru. When done *well*, i generally enjoy the ability to both a) play at the start with endgame gear or conversely b) know that I can approach the game differently whilst still having older gear to fall back onto. In some online games that permit it, I've had friends help me trade high level items to my low level alts.

I've heavily, heavily modifed my ME2 and ME3 coalesced.ini files. I've essentially removed the need to do any of the minigames (ie. scanning, avoiding reapers, refuelling, etc), I've tweaked weapon properties to make them more enjoyable, unlocked all cosmetics/armour sets, one button to max out renegade and paragon (so I can approach any conversation however I wish without the need to only go one or the other) and more.

Skyrim and other Bethesda games I've heavily modded. I have more gigabytes of mods than the games themselves. I also "cheat" by skipping some crap I don't care about, like maxing out blacksmithing, alchemy, enchanting, speechcraft, unlocking all enchantments, etc. They weren't tough to grind out if one cared to level them, and my way also does it without adding to my character levels. I also have a bag of holding to bypass carry weight. In The Witcher 3 I disabled weapon/armour degradation because I think it's utterly tedious.

I don't particularly care for infinite xyz type cheats, though I did use the infinite ammo item in RE7 on an NG+. I love my NG+, I'm a fan of anything that bypasses grind and I like being able to alter things with mods/console commands/ini tweaks.

Yeah, I was talking about those. And you could litteraly see the physics go haywire on them when the kill command was used.
They were ALOT more tollerable in Point Lookout (in which I subsequently killed them the legitimate way).

The AI cheats anyway. They get periodic unit spawns regardless of their resources and shit like that.

Starcraft 2 is less bad about it, there's more varied missions and stuff. But the first Starcraft had so much enemies control 75% of the map and will spam free waves up your arsehole until you systematically and slowly demolish them. Sure it's possible but it's also a massive goddamn chore.
