Contra 4 on hard. Holy Shit. I could not, for the life of me, finish that game without using the Konami Code (Upgrades Your Weapons). I almost wanted to like, crack the DS in two pieces.

The gameboy games where you played as Zero. Normal mode was just stupid hard and there idea of hard mode was Hellish
I believe the game series of which you are thinking is Mega Man Zero. Yeah, those games are pretty punishing.

While I know this game I am about to name isn't the hardest (I mean, I haven't even played some of the ones named in this thread), Comix Zone for the Sega Genesis is definitely a beastly difficult game. The game was a platformer with some beat-em-up style fighting mechanics thrown in. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, first and foremost, you have one life throughout the entire game. There is a slight chance that the final boss will arbitrarily resurrect you, but other than that, dying once ended the game. Secondly, there are no saves and no continues, so unless you are playing on an emulator or something, you have to beat this behemoth in one shot. Thirdly, it is extremely easy to lose health. Even punching walls or objects that cannot be bypassed consumes some of your health. This game, while probably not the hardest of them all, is most certainly a contender for the hardest Genesis game.

seriously? I thought it was easy as hell. The entire game was to me, but it didn't really matter. It's so much fun! =3

Ah, there's always one.

Has anyone said 'I Wanna Be The Guy' on impossible yet? Cause, well... that.
Also, I haven't dared to try Diablo 2: LoD on Hell mode with Hardcore on, but I daresay that's pretty crazy.

There's quite a few I'd nominate. Early Megaman titles, Commandos, Contra, beatmania IIDX, and Nethack all come to mind as being stupidly, almost impossibly hard.

But one game beats them all - Yolanda on the Amiga. Honestly, there is no harder game in existence. It is *designed* to be almost unbeatable and even boasts about its difficulty on the back of the box. I've played it a few times, and have never even completed one level. I think my average lifespan is about three seconds.

This is almost embarassing... I simply can't continue 'Final Fantasy Tactics' after Map 8 or 10. I don't know why, I leveled the jobs quite a bit, but I just seem to have a smaller brain than normal people.

And 'Baroque' does in fact have it's problems, too...

Rondo of Swords for DS...How to make a game so hard that I couldn't pass, in over 10 tries, the 10th (and last) tutorial. The one that tells you to "use everything you've learned form the other tutorials" and win...I did manage to get to mission 8 before I realized that I'd screwed my characters with my skill point choices.

Jet Set Willy on the spectrum with a rubber keyboard.

It's nearly impossible to beat it without a peek or a poke.

I remember seeing a story in the spectrum mag about the first person to beat it.
Got a bottle of champagne I think..

Classics that were hard to finish :

Metal Slug series
Aero Fighters 3
Vendetta
Captain Commando

In the late `90 there was Kingpin if anybody can still remember that game.

The last section of the last level of Far Cry.

Even on easy, I swear that last section is impossible to beat. I've tried all the possible weapon loadouts, different tactics ranging from sprinting in OICW blazing to carefully picking off the little ones then hitting the Fatboys with rockets. Every time something kills me, sometimes it appears to be random inescapable death. If I'm missing something painfully obvious can someone please tell me, it's driven me nuts.

Also,

Ninja Gaiden.
The phrase Ninja Gaiden Hard is well deserved.

Kid Chameleon for the Genesis. I loved that game, but unless you memorized the location of warps or used a damn strategy guide, it was damn near impossible to finish (at least for me). The game had limited lives and continues, no save system and no passwords.
