I think we've all played hard games, probably never beat all of them.. But perhaps some!

1) Alone in the dark (THE GAME IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE! Never used the skip :))

Well that's just about it, i usually put down most hard games... Does that reflect poorly on me?

Probably, the most momentous occasion in my video gaming career in terms of "I just beat that..." comes from one of my favorite games of all time on the SNES.

U.N. Squadron. God, that game was so fucking hard. I never beat it as a kid, but when I was about 16, I sat down with it again and convinced myself that I had to see the ending for myself. What a glorious evening that was. I love that game so much.

One of the Touhou games; even on Easy mode those games are tough as hell.
Which one? Difficulty varies a fair bit. Imperishable Night on Easy with slow mode is beatable by anyone after a few tries, where as Subterranean Animism on Easy is still absolutely vicious.

As for me... Nethack and Crawl come close, but no. Toss-up between Perfect Cherry Blossom on Lunatic (no continues, probably not as hard as the other two and certainly doesn't take as long), I Wanna Be The Guy and ADOM/Ancient Domains of Mystery. A shmup, a platformer and a roguelike, respectively.

Battletoads 1, Mike Tyson's Punchout (I TKOd that son of a) and Bionic Commando.

The only reason I stayed sane through those games was because I spent the better part of 19 years of my life in my parents house being second hand stoned.

Legacy of the Wizard for NES... without a guide. Possibly the biggest waste of two solid days of my young life

I found The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil to be one of the hardest.

The three hardest were getting all 151 Pokemon in Pokemon Pinball legit, (yes, there is a genuine way to get Mew without hax or glitch) getting all of the gold medals in Kirby's Dream Course without using an faq or youtube to find strategies, (way harder than it sounds) and I beat Prinny Can I Really Be the Hero?, and I've done pretty much everything in it, including beating Etna and Prinny Baal. Couldn't beat the boss of the "Li'l Asagi Comes Home" DLC though. :/

S.L.A.I.
(Steel lance arena international)

Game was addictive, but some of the mid ranking bosses in Germany were a *PAIN*...

Demon's Souls on new game++
New game++ was easy compared to just new game+. After having beat the regular new game and thinking you got the hang of it, you start a new game+ and you start by getting your ass handed to you, once again. From what I read it's about 50-60% harder on new game+, compared to subsequent new games which are only 8-10% harder. Atleast that's what I thought.

OT: I'd also like to say Demon's Souls, great game though and only one I bothered to actually get platinum in. That's how much I like it. I also recently started a completely new character, I'm quite rusty, so the going is slow, atleast to kick things off.

God of war on the hardest difficulty. If i didn't love that game so much I would have taken great pleasure in breaking it many times....

Oh and system shock 2. I loved the game, but I think they might have made it a bit to hard..no I'm not a pansy, here me out! The first few levels I was running around with like 4 health the entire time with no way to heal so I would die every time I fought something. It actually ruined my enjoyment of many parts because I didn't feel any accomplishment from actually getting through the level because I had to do it like 8 billion times.

It's rather tricky in its own way. Mostly how there's more randomness in the cards, and your hitbox is invisible. Still, I'm fairly certain that SA is the most vicious one in the series. Ah well, varies by the person, I suppose.
