I just wanted some other insight on really punishing JRPGs. I would have to say the original Final Fantasy, because sometimes just by random luck you would come across a monster that would totally massacre your entire party and you'd have to start all over again

I found Final Fantasy IV DS to be really difficult, particularly around the bit when Rosa gets kidnapped and you have to scale the Tower of Zot to rescue her. I guess I hadn't been grinding enough up to that point, because I was getting wiped out pretty regularly.

Towards the end of FFX there were these Malboros that would ambush you EVERY SINGLE TIME and use Bad Breath, which is usually a death sentence for your entire party.

That psychopathic 2d shooter that's like Raiden or whatever that was a coin eating machine, usually called the hardest boss ever.

The boss battle with that stupid wind ***** right after rescuing Rosa and Kain was pretty hard too, considering she loved to counter every passing breeze with a powerful lightning attack.

May just be for me but in the DS game Luminous Arc, there is one battle I just can't get past. The big problem is that you really don't have many replay able in counters to beef up your guys with. Your sorta forced to just level up hopefully how the game wants you to

Star Ocean: Till the end of Time was pretty hard (okay not the main story unless you played 4d mode like I did) but the three super bosses were nigh impossible without incredibly cheap tactics, other than that I never really had trouble with a JRPG most superbosses don't even phase me.... except star ocean ones and playing Tales of the Abyss on unknown mode was okay but the bosses would take like 10 minutes to kill (with you being overpowered)

You're not really going to find anything in the last decade that compares to the older JRPG's. Of all the ones I've played, 7th Saga on the SNES was probably hardest. Honorable mention to Phantasy Star 2 with its ridiculously large maze-like dungeons, but they printed a small map guide book for the game which simplified it to being just 'hard'.

Final Fantasy II had some rooms that were just monster pits and each step triggered a new encounter. It was pretty over when the party was posioned, you ran out of potions, your MP was low, or your Cure spell was at a low level.

Can't say I've played anything fiendishly difficult, myself. I've heard bad things about the original Final Fantasy, though.

Probably the DS remake of Final Fantasy III, just because it's the only really old-school (NES) JRPG I've played.

Yeah, I haven't played a whole lot of JRPG's. Not that I hate them by any means, though.

Elona Shooter. It's basically a jrpg with guns instead of swords and endless swarms instead of turn-based combat. it's so random that one day you'll get a wave if mice to headshot xp farm and then the next you get a wave of tanks, ogres, flying dragons laser dragons and bosses with fify bagillion life that all your allies like to poke the shield of so damn futilely. and ontop of the sheer relience of an rng to dictate difficulty, if you dont get a decent manual reloading gun or a freaking rocket launcher, you're screwed, and will die aggravatingly 4 seconds before victory. about 98 times. before you hire a mercenary who drains money from you like some kind of leech, where you will be left owing like 5000000 dollars to the angry debtors of the village you're defending.

This is on easy mode too. with all the "make enemies suck" mods active. hardcore mode is determined to rip your balls off by day 4.

This.
It's what stopped me from finishing the game. Those fire/ice thingies wiped out my party except for Cecil, and by the time I had healed up, and done another 1/5 damage to it, and would use the same attack again!

Most of them...

OT:The story gets hard to follow and the constant Monster Attack followed by:
Dancing Pig "oink"
Dancing Pig "Oink"-> DANCING AND INTRO MUSIC
Dancing Pig "Oink"

Follow up

Hero "Oh,I wont lose to you gotta save the world"
Love Interest "I hope we win ^_^'"
Dick "Pfft losers"

This followed by the love interest subplots and the random villan MWhAHAHA

I'm with you on this! As if that weren't bad enough, I don't remember the battle with Golbez behind the Dwarven throne to be so bloody difficult on the SNES (or even the later remakes)! I won't even tolerate that from a vintage JRPG.

I found Persona 4 to be quite hard. Maybe I'm just not used to JRPGs that actually limit how much you can fight, but I always felt that i could barely beat the bosses in Persona 4. It was quite exhilarating actually. You couldn't just grind your way to a high level and easily crush bosses.
