I was just searching for failing news and such when I found a very disturbing article on The Sun's web page.

I wouldn't trust anything in The Sun to be honest; it's so sensationalist and mediocre...

Though I assume you didn't want this to turn into a discussion regarding the quality of various newspapers so, what is the discussion in this thread? At the end of the day people are threatened all the time; it's a sad fact of life, and the only reason this is mentioned in the news is because it occurred to someone a vast number of people may have heard of...

The Sun frustrates me to no end. I was interested in reading an article, not what would be considered in the majority of newspapers as a summary. There's not enough information for me make a comment beyond "Well that sucks."

At the bottom of the article I was informed that Robert Knox, another actor from Harry Potter specifically ...And The Half-Blood Prince had been murdered like two years ago. I can't believe I never knew that. Poor fellow, good brother. I know it's a little late, but my deepest condolences rests with his family.

I have to say, that is kind of shocking to imagine family members trying to kill you, especially given that they don't seem to explain the motivation.
I get the feeling though that this is possibly a sensationalist overreaction although if it isn't then I can't find the words to express my shock at this.

What bothers me is that there is no mention of the family's religion. It's too easy to assume they are muslim. But honor killings like this are all too common this days. Miss Azad is lucky to not be dead or horribly maimed.

Horrible. She's a very pretty woman.

The second link is nothing short of tragic. There are some fundamental problems with extreme Islam, and I've known several Muslim men who were actually good people who detest these actions. The tendency of using acid is odd though.

Similar to the first link there, there was a girl who lived in the area I do who fled to Florida after she was converted to Christianity, and was afraid that her Muslim father was going to kill her. She's 18, and they forced her to go back to live with her father. I don't think anything has been said of it since.

Put the soapbox away? I'm calling this another Sun half-truth. I bet on the next page was and article about people who aren't white are ruining england(Because the white people never did anything wrong till them darkies showed up).

Right and its not like the media targets muslims because "its easy". Rarely do you find a positive portrayal of muslims in the media, and something like the sun is not a place I find reliable information. Yeah it does happen, but a lot of stuff is blown way out of proportion.

I'd imagine their motives are similar to the motives behind so called 'honour killings'.

She probably started dating someone who wasn't Bengali or wasn't the same religion as her family, or refused to comply in an arranged marriage, which would have brought shame and dishonour to her family, therefore the only way to save her family's honour would be to kill her.

The sad fact that honour killings occur among the Asian community in the UK is horrendous, but unfortunately about 12 occur every year on average in the UK, as traditionally women are seen as the property of the family and if they don't comply with the wishes of the males, then they can be 'justifiably' killed to save face or as revenge/punishment.

What is also shocking is that about 1 in 10 young Asians in the UK condone this practice.
