Orcs, dwarves, elves, and everything are hardly original. Same goes for wizards, but that's kind of obvious. All of them are borrowed from different myths and there isn't anything wrong with that. But you shouldn't give people credit for what they haven't done. Even though Tolkien obviously had a great impact on Fantasy genre. But he is hardly the first to write it.

I'm not saying that JRR is bad or anything - I'm probably one of the biggest fans, even though I've grown to dislike some of the things about his books.

Plus, just to be an asshole, the guy who wrote Narnia (and was one of JRR's closest friends, and if my memory serves me right, one of the core members of their club, the Inklings) did technically got his books out before Tolkien finished LOTR. But then again, there was also The Hobbit...

Blargh. Some things about Narnia books... I sure hate.
what, like the horrendously smug christian morality underlining the whole thing? yeah, pisses me off too. and the guy who wrote them is C.S.Lewis.

Actually Orcs were completely invented by tolkien, and creating a completely different world in such immense detail is something original. what we see now as fantasy is mostly influenced by tolkien, and he is the reason they have become cliched. i don't even like the books (except the hobbit) but i can see the originality.

If I was American, I'd be pretty pissed off that the publishers belittled me by thinking i wouldnt understand British words and wouldn't know what a Philosopher was. I mean calling the first book sorcerer's stone in America is like slapping every american harry potter reader in the face and saying they are complete morons.
Also they didn't even think the american audience would like the original book covers. Which is pretty pathetic.
I've enjoyed this little rant even though it doesn't have much to do with the title of the thread lol
