Orcs, dwarves, elves, and everything are hardly original. Same goes for wizards, but that's kind of obvious. All of them are borrowed from different myths and there isn't anything wrong with that. But you shouldn't give people credit for what they haven't done. Even though Tolkien obviously had a great impact on Fantasy genre. But he is hardly the first to write it.
I'm not saying that JRR is bad or anything - I'm probably one of the biggest fans, even though I've grown to dislike some of the things about his books.
Plus, just to be an asshole, the guy who wrote Narnia (and was one of JRR's closest friends, and if my memory serves me right, one of the core members of their club, the Inklings) did technically got his books out before Tolkien finished LOTR. But then again, there was also The Hobbit...
Blargh. Some things about Narnia books... I sure hate.
