Really? You missed 3-4 good controversies.

But speaking of Mass Effect, I would have passed on ME1 had the controversies not led to so much footage playing. For people complaining about sexual content, they spent a lot of time showing people blowing shit up and it looked...Fun.
I totally missed the whole controversy surrounding Mass effect 1 and the sexual content in it. Where was this controversy? Was it in the gaming media, or was it picked up by larger news and anti-game-organisations?

Mass Effect, Fox News was flippin their shit about so, I picked it up to see if it was true. I was surprised to learn how full of shit those asshole at Fox News were, I mean I knew they were liars, but I thought the worst they did was bend the truth like all news stations do. The funny thing is if it hadn't been for those idiots I may have never of played the game.

basically Fox News did a piece on it, condemning the game for having supposed "full frontal nudity" in the sex scenes and they used the clever headline "sexbox"

Two.

I bought Game Dev Tycoon, almost entirely to spite the people here who were saying the false-torrent controversy would hurt the company (it did literally anything but). The game was pretty damn good, too!

Also, I saw a bunch of people somewhere else having a full on verbal fistfight over whether or not "Yume Nikki" and ".flow" were even games, let alone whether or not they were good. So I played them... they were very good, indeed. They were just very different (literally a genre of their own) and rely heavily on fan theories.

I didn't hear about Fez until I read my first "Phil Fish being an asshole" article that someone posted online. So I guess that counts as discovering a game through controversy.

But no, controversy has never made me want to play a game, and especially not buy it. I can't really imagine any controversy that would make me more interested in playing a game.

I don't remember if this was where it actually started, but one of Fox News' experts sounded off on the way you could virtually rape partners of your creation in the game. At that point, the controversy did hit gaming circles, and the "expert" in question had her book review bombed to the stone ages. She eventually retracted her claim, having finally seen what she was talking about in action (that's right, she hadn't even bothered to confirm the "virtual rape," shock) and saying that it was no worse than what you could see on a late-nite movie.

Of course, at that point the controversy had more or less come and gone. But gamers were up in arms and the various news shows were parroting the claims (because journalism is really lazy these days).

Not that I can recall.

I think I may have been interested in mortal kombat for the genesis because of controversy surrounding the violence, but it could have just been thats where I heard of it first.

Not quite the same as getting it because of the controversy.
