One of my earliest gaming memories is still running through that last level of the old super mario bros. There is absolutely nothing in that game to indicate that it did mazes, and this was back in the days before we had internet so there was no way for me to find out. I ran through that so many time I could do most of the early levels with my eyes closed, still have those levels etched into my mind.

More recently I was playing L4D on that airport level. My friend and I finally made it through the various swarms of zombies, and we were ready to leave. I dashed over to the plane and boarded but my friend decided to make friends with a tank before he left. I was thinking about leaving the safety of my plane, this horrible sound comes as a shipping container slides across in front of the boarding ramp. And then in a truly horrifying moment, it slides up the ramp. I desperately run forward, only to find there is no way past it, I run back in the plane, no way out, only a small window out of which I can desperately peer out. Like a hero I fired my gun at that crate until it crushed me.

My friend was only too happy to tell me that it was, of course, a tank that had done this. I don't know if it was a random fluke or if the game does this just to mess with you (more) sometimes, but I feel it was worth the loss just to really get that good feeling of being hopelessly doomed out of what is ostensibly a horror game.

Advance Wars 1 (GBA) - AI is able to fire into fog of war as well as engage enemies it can't in direct combat.
TES3: Morrowind (PC) - leveling up by running, thus making enemies stronger, while you stay nearly the same (except.. you can run from them a bit faster!).
CnC: Generals: Zero Hour - a bot launched a harmageddon (super-powered nukes available in some mods) missile the moment I destroyed the factory. The timer was at 10:00
Morrowind doesn't have level scaling, only Oblivion does. Point still applies really (although putting Athletics as a Major Skill is just asking for trouble) which is why there's some eleventy billion mods out there specifically to remove it.

Uh uh! I got a good one!

At the end of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, you have to chase down this guy and shot him. Well, half way though the chase, he decided to turn on noclip and disappeared into the building we were standing on... sneaky rat!

I got stuck on Burn Em Out and I had to give it back to my friend or I would have broken that disk in half.

I'm doing better on CoD 4 on Veteran. Although No Fighting in the War Room needs more Checkpoints.

not really the machine, but
Portal: Aperture science
Last time record I needed, chamber 18.
I was going into the elevator with like 3 seconds to spare, when my mom, who had been trying to fix a lamp in the other room, hit the master switch in the garage without asking. took me 3 more hours to get again.

Have you ever played Naval Battle on iPod? On the last level or two, this computer hits your ships one after another while rarely ever missing a shot...

Yeah this.
Also, Nazi zombies where one will come up to you, and will do two swipes an down you, leaving you there fuming shouting "HOW IS THAT EVEN REMOTELY FAIR!?".

Also, on Der Reise, at the window at the top of the stairs at the teleporter by where the mystery box is at first, a zombie leant his arm out the window and downed me in one hit. This was when I got angry and started shouting.

Command and Conquer Red Alert 3.

I really do like the game and I still play it but there's one level in the Allied campaign that just makes me want to beat the devs.

To use your "super powers" you have to be able to actually see where you're putting them down i.e. you can't just throw it into the fog of war. However, the CPU doesn't seem to face this restriction and just spams you with crap you can't guard against.

I don't know whether this counts, but I have been annoyed a few times while playing Half Life 2 and it's episodes. The way the game separates you from Alyx in many cases has been ingenious, but a few times I felt like I was cheated. For example, in Episode 2 where you enter the elevator shaft just after...

SPOILER ALERT ******************* Alyx is injured END SPOILER ALERT************************

No matter how many playthroughs I wasted in that area, I could not take the crowbar and escape, even though I had the boxes stacked and everything. There was just an invisible wall blocking me. I know it has to be like that in order for the story to progress, but I still felt that I was cheated.

Fable 2.

Your kid.

After returning from that god-aweful spire crap. You get a quest involving your hellspawn.

But ofcourse, like everything else in this shitty game, it's bugged to hell and impossible to complete.

I've done it FIVE ¤#&%ing times with FIVE different characters, bugged every time. Tried different mates (including Alex) and different approaches.

Despite having a certain charm to it, and being my first console game for 16 years, I'm so trading this shit for something else...

RTS games that blatantly start with more resources than you.
Yup, and can build units and structures quicker, and they always know where you are. Command and Conquer is a fiend for doing this. >=(

Prisoners of War from CoD 2 on veteran.
You're riding on a lorry-thing, can't move and in CoD 2, you also can't throw back grenades.
Guess what the Germans decided to throw en mass.

The Proton collider etc.. you can, but of course you don't know what you're hitting. And the chronosphere is a bugger, as you cannot use it unless you can see what you're aiming at. Which makes surprise attacks on a base a bugger to co-ordinate.

NPC civilians in Saints Row 2 enjoy running in front of/into your car and ramming you off the road as soon as anything important is happening.
Of course this sends your car flying in impossible directions.
Many a mission had to be repeated because of this.
Apart from that I love the game.

Ah... I remember one of the castlevania games, they had this boss that was rather hard, once you beat them you get a game over. Apparently you were suppose to go back to the 2nd level and find an insanely well hidden magic power that was now accessable, and use it on them to win. I just randomly stumbled upon this and the game tells you NOTHING. I also remember another instance in a game where every boss game over's your ass unless you find out their weakness. Again, the game tells you nothing about this, and a lot of the weaknesses are common sense. One of them was this, "Attack the glowing spot on it's back." you have to read this from a stone slab at the end of a fucking annoying dungeon, then go back and fight the thing, hoping it doesn't instant game over you for your character's retardation.

Swift has missed for me now. The first time I saw it I thought they'd used Fly or Dive or something. Then it missed again and I was now a ball of utter rage!

Pokemon games can't even follow their own damn programming.
