Has a game ever spoiled you for a genre?

I'd have to say WoW ruined MMOs for me. Not so much because it's good, but because i realized they're ALL basically the same book with different pictures.

The Mass Effect series has spoiled me for every game since. Say what you will about its flaws, it has literally been everything that I was waiting for in a video game franchise.

Multi-dimensional protagonist and NPCs alike, epic storytelling and downright excellent gameplay.

I am hoping that someday this will change, but I don't think I will ever be as completely taken with a game series as I am with Mass Effect. 16 play thrus and counting for a person who never replays games (maybe ratchet and clank twice.)

I know this sounds like a love letter to BioWare...actually, Im okay with that.

I love you BioWare and I'm glad that you ruined me for all games after.
this is me

just insert kotor for mass effect (although i really did like mass effect also)

just saying..im 40+ playthroughs in kotor and still enjoying the fuck out of it.

i still crack a smile everytime i see the cutscene where i take off the sith mask to see im revan, the super badass

Yeah, I played it... got bored after a while. I mean, it was INCREDIBLE while it lasted, but I just got bored and had to move on... We remained friends, but we haven't talked since and... well, Prototype does things that Crackdown would never do. I mean, really, is it too much to...

I think I've gone off-topic.

Escape Velocity spoiled me for space trading/combat sims. I've gotten enjoyment out of Wing Commander: Privateer and Freelancer, but the experience just isn't as long lasting with them.

I can't play GTA games or prototype or infamous because of crackdown. I'm guessing the sequel is just going to ruin the first game for me.

FarCry2, Crysis and Operation Flashpoint ruined FPS genre for me.

WarHammer Dawn of War 2 ruined the RTS genre.

The GTA series. Now I absolutely loathe any game where you can free roam. Then again it started the genre but I really abhor games with free roaming. I usually send them back to gamefly the same day

I used to think Condemned and a few others were pretty good, then I played the Silent Hill games, the first four ... Now I roll my eyes at any horror game I see. But thinking back, I'd have probably gotten bored of horror anyway, so it might not be all Silent Hill's fault.

Marvel v.s. Capcom 2. did it for me. Most other fighting are a tad slow for my taste. The only other game that could compare would be TMNT: Tournament Fighters on the fastest hyper mode.

R:TW ruined RTS games, no other one compares.
Mount&Blade ruined all action-RPG's. The combat is so amazingly well done that no button masher will ever come close (you won't understand until you play it, go download it now), and the Warband expansion even further ruined everything by ruining the original M&B.

OP got me. In my opinion GW has the best story and PVP compared to other MMORPGs(Ragnarok Online comes close in pvp!). To think that you don't need to grind super equips to enjoy PVP. I have never been the grinding type, I don't even feel like getting the titles in GW. :D
Most interesting story in a MMORPG? Eye of the North.

Thus, GW2 is on my list of most wanted.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

There has yet to have been an rpg which even comes close to matching that game in either scope, scale, style or story. And frankly I'm beginning to doubt a game ever will at this point. Even Biowares 'spiritual successor' to the series, Dragon Age, felt... empty and malnourished compared to the feast that was the original Baldur's Gate series. And I *loved* Dragon Age, it's just BG2 was better.

Perhaps that's why I'm not upset at all that rpg are moving towards 3rd and 1st person combat more and more. Overhead rpg are done, BG2 won, game over. Time to try new things!

Not a very known game, but Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds ruined the RTS genre for me. I became so used to the game, the control, that when I tried Command & Conquer, I just couldn't enjoy it... At all.
