Only when there is a choice involved and the consequence changes the game somehow. I'll spend the rest of the game thinking "what if I did it another way", but that's the advantage games have over real life you can just replay them again and again.

The "Sorry about the blood" would get me, too, but that'd have nothing to do with character design. It's a reference to Per Yngve Ohlin (aka Dead), the singer from the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. He commit suicide with a shotgun and left a note apologizing for the blood.
On topic, though.. I don't think characters have ever been written well enough for me to care about them. I know the little sisters from Bioshock were supposed to make me care, but I only saved them because the rewards were better.
The only death that I ever cared about was
::SPOILER::

Eli Vance.
And it was scripted.

Deus Ex. Trying to be the good guy isn't always easy.
Protip: Trap Anna Navarre with a box, killing is entirely optional in that game if you're savvy.
No, no, no. That's not what I meant, I haven't even gotten that far yet.

I mean just the regular NSF grunts.

OK, it's a really old game and if you haven't played it by now you probably won't, but I spoilered it anyway.

Killing a childhood friend because he wants to save the world and picked the wrong side really messed with my head. Killing the end boss was made a little easier because of it, although she was simply a misguided savior as well.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The enemies were so damn cute I felt bad about throwing eggs at them. I even felt bad when throwing the egg at them just made them fall down and cause a little sleep snot bubble to come out of their nose.

The Oddworld Games :p

I would often go on a murderous spree, killing mudokons in all the funniest ways I could (farting next to one, causing it to step away into a meat grinder was a favorite at the time). I would suddenly feel bad for Abe, and restart and then go and save them all.

Oh, and also, when you leave Elum behind at the entrance to the Paramonian temple I would leave him by the mines, take the air duct, walk back onto the screen and tell him to follow me. I didn't do this because I felt killing an innocent creature, I did this because I felt awful leaving him there all alone with no food or water, and no way to escape. So I put an end to his misery by using his trusting nature to make him walk into mines...

Then again, I guess neither of those were enemies... But they were killable. And technically if you possessed a slig, they were enemies...

So just to make sure I contributesomething that is definitely on topic, I will say that guy from GTA IV who you have hanging off the top of a construction site and you're given the choice to let him fall, or pull him up. I felt so bad about killing him that I reloaded my prvious save just so I could choose differently. On a sidenote, I felt realllllly good after shooting Vlad through the eye...

EDIT: Also, the Kane & Lynch games, I feel really bad about killing innocent cops in games, even if they're on a bad guys payroll.

Oohh!! I know I felt guilt, I felt really bad about the bodyguard after the wood elf got . . . squashed.
What body guard? What wood elf?

Im totally opposite here. The "Clue" mission for the dark brotherhood was one of the best moments in video gaming overall for me. Im rpetty confident it was just me, (I killed everyone myself, and left the old lady for last) but when I confronted the old lady, I could have swore I saw a look of terror on her face. Made the entire sneaking around bit worth every moment.

And as for me, it would have to be my own people in Black and White 1/2. I normally play as a good guy (even if my forays into the dark brotherhood dont seem so), but I like to explore all of my video games, so I've played through a few times as an evil god. If you've never played it, once your alignment is solidly evil, your town is a cesspool of pain and suffering. You can't even zoom in on it without having to listen to the whimpering cries of children in poverty. Just makes you feel sad.
I see your point in Oblivion, and I totally see your point in B&W!! What a horrible game to play as evil in!!

Didn't you have to beat your animal too? And starve it and stuff... I only briefly tried Evil in that game... I couldn't bare it anymore..!

I've always felt bad about killing goombas in Mario games. It's not like they actually ever kill anybody, they always just slowly walk off of cliffs.

For me the one that stands out is having to kill the Claptraps in the Claptrap's Robot Revolution DLC for Borderlands. I go all the way through the main storyline helping them out, repairing them, and they helped me in return. Then the Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap shows up and infects them with a virus and I have to start scrapping them by the hundreds.

Well I know it's not real - so, no. I am, however, still completely confused as to why Lambert orders me to kill that random woman in the original Splinter Cell game. He was just like 'Sam, smoke that biatch.' Or maybe he wasn't quite as black as that.

In Fallout New Vegas I never really felt guilty about killing important characters until the end of the game. Where it recounts the good things you have done for people as well as how you inadvertantly murdered everyone in a village. For some reason I really strive to do as much as possible in-game so I can have the best ending possible. Of course for my Caesar's legion run through, I intend to be the most evil piece of shit that I can.
