Has anyone else noticed this about New Vegas?

Compared to say, Fallout 3 and Oblivion, the random caves and stuff you can go in are considerably smaller, unless there's actually something to do there.

I, for one, enjoy this. There's nothing more annoying than walking around in some random cave/subway for 30 minutes to find that there's nothing of value there, and you've wasted time that could have been otherwise spent killing things.

It's also a lot easier than Fallout 3... except those damn Cazadors.

Yeah, I do like the fact that they aren't deliberately trying to waste your time with some of these caves anymore.

I still think Deathclaws are more annoying than Cazadors personally, but the Legendary Cazador was a pain in the ass to kill. I'd say it's more difficult than Fallout 3 for me personally.

No it isn't. If anything, it's harder. Deathclaws are lethal, Cazadores are lethal. Heck, even a Radscorpion can do a ton of damage. In comparison, FO3 was a walk in the park.

My melee character has a higher DPS at level 6 than my pistol-wielding character did at level 20.

Anyone else kill the Legion at Nipton only to find themselves the swift victim of drastically overpowered Legion Assassins? Seriously, those guys had 12.7mm Pistols which do way more damage than anything you have access to at that point.

Yeah, for the most part, they are smaller. However, there are plenty of buildings to explore, and all of them seem "just right" when it comes to size and things to discover.

I thought one of Fallout 3's strongest points was exploration, with all the subways and various streets. Though let's face it, most of it was the same and there was hardly anything of interest to find. I appreciated the traveling aspect more than discovering things of 'value'.

Nope, I ran into them after clearing out a legion camp about 30 minutes later. :p

The only reason I survived that was because I skirted around the environment to avoid them.

Yeah, those Legion Assassin's are damn lethal at low levels. That's why I usually wait awhile before pissing off the Legion. They only started to go after me after I killed everyone at the Fort.

Much more dangerous than those mercs from 3.

They don't seem to follow you through loading screens, unless that was a subtle glitch. My pistol-wielding character survived the a fight with them by running circles around a train car and taking potshots and then running into one of the buildings at Sloan. Note: Everything in Sloan was dead when I got there that time.

Lol, I actually liked the uselessness of some of the environment, it made it feel more real to me.

Oooooooohhhhh yeah. I tried everything to lose them, and it took me about 30 tries before I finally was able to get rid of all of them. That is why, when I reached level 25 and had maxed out my melee skill, I held a one man assault on the fort with nothing but a fire axe and a couple stimpacks. My god was that satisfying.

I like New Vegas because of iron sights...

How I love iron sights...

OT: Yeah, no, I don't mind the caves etc. being smaller. I prefer not wasting time like that if I can avoid it anyway.

As for whether it's easier or not. I'm playing through using iron sights and avoiding vats altogether. It's quite a bit harder.

And how the flip are you meant to kill the Legate at the end? I mean, I'm finding it quite difficult despite using power armour and a mixture of an incinerator, a thermic lance, riot shotgun, 10 mm SMG, and the Q35 Matter modulator.
He just won't take damage... Fucker.

Edit: Added spoiler tags

No but the Ranger Assassins are pretty annoying too, except I had my portable space laser with me.

Stealth boy, sneak up before him, place a few C4, back up, shoot him in such a way that he notices you and walks over the C4.
BOOM.

Useless caves makes the game feel more like a real world to me. When I was playing Oblivion/Fallout 3 I went into caves because they were there, not just because I needed to.

Fallout 3 was quite easy to me... Stealth paired with small arms and hand-to-hand (deathclaw gloves are uber/OP) makes for pretty easy kills.

I would agree that the random caves etc do seem smaller however they seem to have more of a purpose this time around. Occasionally in FO3 you'd come across a location that had only mediocre loot and a few baddies to kill and that was that. All of the locations in NV, to me at least, have had some sort of notable loot/story or enemies (looking at you legendary deathclaw, cazador etc).

As for the difficulty of the enemies you encounter I find it varies wildly at some times. One second I'm ballistic fisting my way through a swarm of half a dozen fiends and then the next I'm getting literally one shot by a mother deathclaw at lvl 18.

P.S I would agree about cazadors for sure however I must say that a flamer and decent energy weapons skill makes quick work of an entire swarm.

And if one lacks C4?
