Just out of curiosity (and cause I couldn't find it in the Search Bar) I want to ask,
Has anyone in the Escapist ever been subjected to Racism and/or Sexism in their life?
Also note, I'm very curious to hear about whites and/or males facing one of these, because like one of my college proffers said:
"You really don't get a feel for racism until you've yourself have went through it."
As a German-born living in the US, I've had my fare share of discrimination (not sure what the specific word for discrimination against a nation).
The first time I experienced it is when I was just a wee young thing. I was outside in the US of A, playing with my Mom in the front yard. The woman next door came over to us, striking up a chat with my mom. They were having a discussion when the neighbor-lady asked where my Mom got her jeans. "Oh, these? I bought them at cloth shop in my village, in Germany."
And with a dead-serious face, this woman than asks my Mom "Oh, you people have those? I thought you were only allowed skirts!"
That was about a decade or so ago. Think that the American community would get better educated over that time? Nope...
Whilst talking with a track-member of an opposing team at a Track Meet, I was talking about the village I lived in and told him about how we have Horse and Carriage rides for tourists.
"Man, how do you guys deal with all the shit?" he asks me with a jokey but slightly serious tone.
"Um...it's only a couple horses, their easy enough to clean after..."
"What? But don't you guys, like, use them to get around?" now with all serious.
"...."
And there's been smaller cases. Been called "Little Hitler" or "Nazi In Stealth Mode," and sometimes when a conversation I'm in turns to something socialist or Holocaust-ish, they'll turn to me with a knowing look and say "Well, you should know all about that, eh?" sometimes as a jokes, sometimes serious.
So, dear Escapists, has anyone ever been that discriminating at you to such a degree?
