Not really. Its not like the FPS genre was this blossoming wellspring of originality and variance to begin with.

Its essentially the same shit people were doing all those years ago with doom: pointing and shooting.
The basic trends of the genre have been building for a long, long time. Probably the last game to have a really huge impact on other games was Halo... and that's because everyone adopted the recharging health, two rifle limit, and the like.

I'm not really sure I see much of an impact from Call Of Duty on single player campaigns. The whole realistic military weapon thing has been the ever-increasing bane of the genre for a long, long time (1998 saw the really disappointing Blood sequel which replaced the cool weapons of the original with a bunch of slightly futuristic military garbage). Far Cry and F.E.A.R. pretty much went that route before joining the modern world was an glimmer in Infinity Ward's eye.

Or is this all about CoD's influence on MP with the XP system and weapon upgrades? Can't speak to that at all.

well of course we have to compare things to other things. how will we learn from the past and improve? i personally think crysis is nothing like CoD due to the special powers, open-world approach to linear mission design, and absolutely breathtaking settings. and you know, the aliens. which is fine. i like both series. but crysis is very similar to far cry. and i havent played enough games to know whether far cry is original or is similar to something else. ya see? always a comparison. that's how progress is made.

Everyone is at fault. Call of Duty hasn't changed in the slightest since COD 4. Because the developers are too lazy to actually make a good product, they've made 3 new COD games that are even worse then the game before them. To top it off, Black Ops is the worst of the bunch, combining a less then decent story with a multiplayer experience that lags worse than Quake 3. The COD series stays popular, however, because of the many people who are tricked into buying these new releases. It gets to the point that there is nobody playing a multiplayer game on consoles unless they're playing COD.

Then you have the lazy developers who make games that just try to rip off COD (Medal of Honor). Nobody plays those games because they put even less thought into the end product other than making it look cool. They see how successful COD is doing, and decide to make another bland, generic, fps with a bland, generic, story.

The problem with COD is, it's fallen into a rut. It's fan service now and it's not trying anything new.
Yeah. I agree. If they changed it up and tried something every game it might seem like its worth it but just look at the releases.

Personally I love Halo the most out of all FPS's but you have in release order:

Halo 3 -> CoD4 -> WaW -> MW2 ->Blops/Halo Reach within a month or two.

CoD came out with four games in the timespan of Halo's one. It kinda gives the illusion that although there's barely anything new with each game, there's something new coming out all the time. It took Halo over 10 years to come out with 4 solid-direct sequel games where CoD took what... 2-3 years?

It can't keep it up for too much longer, and now with Microsoft in charge of Halo instead of Bungie I fear that Halo will fall into that same rut as well. I'm willing to give 343 a shot though before dismissing them as corporate cash-in developer with no intent on trying anything really risky. Because even though the Halo sequels are well spaced out, IMO, it doesn't mean they aren't getting a bit stale.

I think this is the year CoD dies, and innovation comes back to FPS's. There's Brink, which is totally changing the multiplayer format as well as taking us back to it's roots of the Enemy Territory games, there's Bulletstorm which isn't particularly original, but looks like a hark back to shameless 90's ass kickers, there's Bodycount that we've still heard nothing about, there's X-COM, wich looks damn good even if purists will hate it, and there's Homefront that...Is CoD with cars and a storyline written by a nutcase.

Just trust me, things are gonna change. I bet we hardly even see too many FPS's in 2012 and onwards for a while!

Call of Duty's insane level of popularity will die down eventually I think. The same probably goes for the other genres as well, although I do find it irritating that so many games are being accused of riping off another game, when their only similarity is their genre. There'll always be leaders of the genres though, and they'll be the first point of comparison whenever any similar game is released.

No need to appologise for dissing CoD in any way man.
In every gamers heart there's a reason not to like that game.

As for anyone else who feels the need to compare any shooter to a game that takes itself too seriously and leaks of all the wrong kinds of patriotism is the sort of gamer that we needn't listen to.

Dont worry fella.

Do you want the short answer? Yes.

The long answer? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.

Basically, it's spoiled almost every FPS player into thinking that you don't have to aim in order to get a kill or you don't have to work as a team in order to get the win.
