Ugh... got into 6th form today, and I already hate the school again.

In your free time - that's time when you don't have lessons - you have to stay in school.

I mean... seriously, what? What's the point in that?
It's because they think you will fail if you're not studying 24/7 and they don't trust you to study at home.

Lower sixth in my school have always had that, and now just when I get into upper 6th it's taken away from us as well (though to be fair, some of my year probably deserved it, and they will give us the privilege back after the first half term so long as our reviews are good).

The biggest dick move my school has played was forking out a quite frankly ludicrous amount of money on a merger with a nearby school that we didn't even need just so the headmaster could feel like he actually had some balls.

Meanwhile there were plenty of other things that needed spending money on urgently. However, because the school now has no money left in the budget spending across all departments has been cut to zero for at least the first half of this year, and probably beyond.

Does this make any sense... to anyone... at all?

they added a 'SQuid' cashless system, only to say the first day of the next year that they removed it, and any money left on the accounts had to be used soon...

also we only got to choose:
a Technology(resistant materials, electronics,graphics,textiles,food, etc)
a Language (French OR German, unless you chose French for one of your other options and german for this)
2 regualr options

and you HAVE to take RE... which is a waste since neither of the RE teachers ever teach, one looks for his glasses and the other shouts at everyone all the time... it's like a free period, especially with the man, since he seems half deaf

I finished my degree program (college/university) in December. At that time, the school had 2 graduation ceremonies. The one I was going to (in December) was much smaller and was actually held at the school. The other one was in May, was much larger, and couldn't be held at the school due to the size of the graduating class.

Then I got an email in November saying that the school was cancelling the December ceremony, and that I would have to go to the one in May.

Now I had to haul myself down to a convention center, and sit in a damn folding chair for three hours while graduation speakers read everyone's name. And that three hours was JUST the reading of the names.

Now I have a crummy retail job that pays less than jobs I had in High School.

Incidentally, I didn't want to go to the ceremony at all, but I figured that my parents would appreciate it.

We had a contest every year that was sort of like a male version of the homecoming queen court. They had to raise money for charity, and then at the end they had a big dance where the contestants and their dates were rewarded for their efforts.

My senior year, a gay friend of mine was winning. He was planning on going with his boyfriend, and no one really cared.

Until some angry parent got mad and called a local radio talk show to complain about a same sex couple in the winners' circle.

The principal cancelled the dance.
Oh you have got to be fucking kidding me! Just because 1 parent complained?! (It was just one parent right?)

Things like this almost make me ashamed to like vagina. I don't know that many gay people but I'm yet to meet a gay person who would be this plain mean. I'm starting to wonder if they're just inherently better people than us.

There was a bit of an uproar in the area after the person's call was on the radio, but it was still asinine.

"Yeah, [DTJ's highschool friend], you've just raised thousands of dollars to help people with heart disease, but we've cancelled your congratulatory dance because some one who has no part in this situation was upset the person you like has XY instead of XX."

Makes perfect sense.

My school served what they had the balls to call food.
If I'd wanted, I could have sued their asses to the death : uncooked meat, three-days-old stuff being refrozen and then served back, and so on. On my first year there I had two cases of food-poisonning. Second and third years, I ate in restaurants.
Btw, if you complain about 4 dollars wraps, let me tell you about their price-tags : for this shit-fest, they had the gall to charge us 6.50 EUROS per lunch.
I believe that was the last stroke : each time I saw what my friends were eating, I was about to throw up.
Also, I heard they upped the price since I left. Nice.

We can't use our homeroom time to sit and talk to our friends. We have to be working on something for the whole 22 minutes. This also means our freetime is cut from barely 50 minutes to 30 minutes. Luckily, I can't name a single teacher who enforces this.

I got t two schools; one so I can take a 3 hour video game design class, and then my regular school for math, English, and science. This other school I go to has uniforms. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but definitely a major first world problem. Also, they have a different schedule than my regular school...instead of two weeks of winter break, I get a week of half-days, a week off, and then a week of half-days. Instead of one week of spring break, I get two weeks of half-days. Not sure if this is better or worse...

Oh, and my regular school started baking fries. They taste like soggy plastic, instead of fried, breaded, and well spiced plastic.

Back in high school, at the start of the year, they gathered us all together for the first assembly of the term and announced that any pupil that got themselves a high rate of attendence at the end of term (95%) or above I think it was, then they would be rewarded with a trip to Alton Towers. Our jaws pretty much hit the floor at that point.

I managed to pull off a 100% attendance rating that year. Did we get our trip to Alton Towers though? Did we hell. It was probably more annoying the fact that the school never explained the reason for it. Most likely budgetary but you all imagine the teachers sitting in the staff room congratulating each other over coming up with the perfect ruse to raise attendance levels.

It's interesting to read all this stuff about having to stay in shcool during your free periods. We were pretty much free to go as and when we pleased back when I was at school. Call it reading to much into things, but looking at the new school buildings popping up in these parts, the fences and gates around the grounds are definitely a lot higher than they were in my day. Guard towers will be popping up next!

Oddly enough though these days, I actually see more high school kids at lunchtime heading to the chippy/carry out for their lunch. Not surprising, due to the rabbit food being offered back in the canteen...

Mine made us go to school in a nasty snow storm (We got sent back by 2nd period) and they played with the idea of giving us uniforms (luckily it never came to pass).

Also my school was the same school as a certain Oklahoma daycare bomber

The 11th grade class trip at my highschool had always been to Hershey Park. It had happened every single year basically since the school was built.. Except for the class of 2004.. my class. For 1 year and 1 year only, the school decided to have a spring dance instead of the class trip. I still haven't had the opportunity to go to Hershey Park.

Oh, they also banned all backpacks cause some ass stuck some bubble-gum on a computer board and called in a bomb threat not long after Columbine. They didn't ban gigantic purses, gym bags, lap-top cases, trench coats, or anything else that could easily conceal a bomb or fire-arm, just back-packs.

Also, my school repeatedly failed to meet the No Child Left Behind standards and often has to lowest standardized test scores in PA. I'm so proud when I tell people what high-school I went to. Of course, the fact I can properly pronounce the name of the town I live in, a rarity among people here, usually tells them I'm above that.

Uh what? Are you telling me you went to high school for more then 4 years because someone lost your papers?
They didn't lose them, they refused to give them to me, and I had to start over because I was left with no other choice.

Wow. That is a dick move.

Please, elaborate further.

My sister's school chose to axe one year's budget for textbooks to buy something completely unrelated, so the students had to buy the textbooks out of pocket.

Seeing how summer just passed, everyone had to do summer reading assignments. Honors English had to read The Iliad and another book of their choice. Because of some miscommunications when picking my classes (Which is done in the middle of eighth grade. What the hell?!), I did not know I was in Honors English. I didn't find out until orientation.

Because of this, they expected me to read THE ILIAD in THREE DAYS Keep in mind that up until this point, I have never been taught how to read and understand classical literature, and that it's well over 600 pages, AND I had to write a report on it plus the OTHER book I read.

What the fuck, lady?

I shit you not, the school I attended as a young teenager emplaced a rule whereby we were not allowed within 30cm (12 inches) of another pupil.

Logistically, it was a nightmare when we decided to play them at their own game. The lunch hall and assemblies were particularly hilarious.

My old high school's timetable changed to a Week A/Week B system, making it even harder to remember what subjects you have on any given day. Luckily I'm not there to see that, but plenty of my friends still there complain about it.

What I DID see was the removal of doughnuts, pancakes, cake slices and any other sweet foods besides cookies and tray bakes - the ONLY good food the cafeteria makes.
