Has gaming ever taught you a new word or how to spell?

Repeatedly typing 'Shadow of the Colossus' on messages boards has finally taught me how to spell colossus without using a spell checker. So gaming has taught me to spell -

- Phoenix
- Colossus
- Attorney

There are also a few other words that I've learn to pronounce properly through talking about games. Like -

- Soliel
- Dues Ex

There are probably even some words I would likely never have known (or had a use for) if not for video games. Like the the Japanese word -

- Gaiden.

So are there any words that games have taught you? Or taught you to spell?
(or just ones that you first heard through a video game). If not then maybe you think games need to increase their vocabulary?

Er actually the 'sigillum sanguise' things from TES IV: Oblivion (spelling is not correct, me thinks) scored me some major points in my history class when we were talking about Old English personalities and stuff.

I can type faster thanks to RuneScape. Most MMO's will do that.
This, but I was blown away by the WOW players in my class. 96 wpm are you kidding me!?!?

Also when my 7th grade science teacher asked the class to identify a pestle and mortar, I was the only one who knew, and I knew from potion making in Runescape.

All the fucking time.

Especially World of Warcraft was a huge contributor since it taught me a lot of the more everyday use of language and slang.

Even though it, of course, had some people that couldn't spell for shit, it still helped. :)

I got mortar and pestle from TES.

I know games have taught me some words, but they are either too obscure (ie: Vargrian) or way at the back of my mind, so I won't list any. Other than Vargrian.

96wpm? Pfffft, I can top 106.

But, back on Topic...
Yeah, about a Quarter of my Vocabulary comes from Games. My History teacher looked quite impressed when I explained why a Bayonet has a groove down the side, why Rifles are rifled, things like that, and also by my immense knowledge of Warfare, Military Terms, Russia, the Cold War, and Firearms. I didn't get all of that from Games though, but the Games made me research all these topics an awful lot.

I learned new phrases from games, not so much individual words. Most of these have come from Resistance 2: "Squawk In," "Contact," etc.

I also learned "Stay Frosty" from the Alien: Resurrection arcade game.

Have you ever heard of the term Perepeteia? It means getting fucked by a reversal of fortunes.

REFERENCE!

I imagine so, can't think of any offhand but I play text heavy games fairly often so I must have learned many words.

Gaming helped me with most the words I know, RPG's heavy with text in particular.

PS: Isn't Gaiden some kind of foreign mail or something?

Edit: Foreign Telegram, that's the one.

And what's that mean? Or is it a name of something in a game? (Cause that so does not count, =/)

Yes, though I can't remember which.

In a less-suitable response, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh TCG's taught my sister and myself how to do math WAY before other kids could in our grade level.

All the 1337 speak aside, yes. I've been gaming since 1990, I was 4, games taught me to both read and speel over the years.

Learned how to type 80 WPM and how to spell much, much better than I used to from WoW. Good stuff.
