Has gaming ever taught you a new word or how to spell?

Yes, pretty much. Most of my English was learned from games and movies so it was more then just a few words for me.

I can type faster thanks to RuneScape. Most MMO's will do that.
Yeah, Guild Wars taught me to touch type.

I've picked up the English spelling for Chernobyl from gaming, (though I can't remember the German spelling off hand.)

Though gaming (not necessarily video gaming) did help me massively in German because of all the half hidden cognates that have become anachronistic in English, but are very close to their German equivalents.

Well, I learned callipygian from ZP (but not how to spell it).

Considering it's my favourite property for people to have, that's pretty good.

I knew what a Monastery was because of playing Age of Empires.
I have a natural knack for spelling things correctly anyway.

Baldur's Gate (BG2 mostly) taught me a lot of english, which is my second language.
Read every damn word of dialogue, like I do in (almost) every game I play.

Ocarina of time, age five.
I learned what a coup de grâce was. And that it wasn't pronounced "coop-dee-grayce".

Without video games, I would never have found out how to spell Xel'Naga! Because, like, I use that in everyday conversation.

Really though, I'm pretty sure it has. I can't think of any specific examples, but I'm sure it must have. I just have a felling like I owe the correct spelling of something to video games.

Hm. I read a great deal and began playing games when I was quite young, so its hard to say just very my vocabulary came from, though since I've always enjoyed language heavy games I'm sure they were a big part of it.

I would bet that the old text based games like Zork and Colossal Cave as well as MUDs and MUSHes later expanded the selection of words I would commonly use, even if I may have already known their definition.

Drink the potion
I don't understand.

Swallow the potion
I don't understand.

Um, Eat the potion?
I don't understand.

Just drink the damn potion!
I don't understand.

*Finds instructions* Quaff, really? Ok, Quaff the potion.
You drink the potion.

Really game? You did that on purpose.

I figured out what "watch my six" means from Modern Warfare.
Wait, you mean that doesn't mean to stare at the best friend on Blossom?

Because, um, everyone did that right?

Better, much better.
My mom is Lebanese so when I was younger we used to live in Lebanon, I spoke Lebanese, could barely speak french and didn't speak English at all. Wanna know how I learned English? The old Pokemon games. Seriously, I have perfect spelling and a large vocabulary now and it's all because of Pokemon and various other video games. English is my 3rd languageIt's pretty much my first language though, seeing as I don't have a foreign accent when I'm speaking English but I'm told I have a foreign accent when I speak in Lebanese and I speak it better than the majority of the kids at my school for whom it's their first -.-
