I'm ashamed to say that I was well on board the hype train for GTA IV. Needless to say I'm far more cautionary now about building up such high expectations.

All hype does for me is entice me to buy the game, it doesn't make the game any good. Examples include Halo 3, it was not as good as I was led to believe.

My god yes. Mass Efect. It probaly is a great game, but I just found it dull and too strug out with dialouge.

also without wanting to be stoned from above by all the fanboys out there, i honestly dont like CoD4, or any call of duty for that matter. Now to hide under my desk..
You seriously didn't like CoD4? What was wrong with it?
To be fair, it was good for the first month or so after finishing the campain, the online play was still good, but eventually it got ridiculously boring, yet all my freinds were avidly hooked, one of them tried to start a fight with me after i said i didnt like it that much, but the stopped considering i was twice his size, width and weight.

I'd like to say I haven't but.....Grand Theft Auto IV tricked me severely.

I saw all the 10/10's and "GAME OF DUR YER!" stuff from it, and I honestly expected that it would be the greatest game I would play in my life.

Turns out, that prestigious honor went over to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and later when on to LittleBigPlanet. I couldn't even finish GTA4, it bored me so much (which is ironic when you think about MGS4)

The only game that REALLY let me down after a load of hype was Zelda: Twilight Princess. I enjoyed it at first, but when I went back and played Wind Waker again after it, I realized "By the Triforce, this game is loads better!" though I stated it in a much less nerdy way =P

I can only play TP now if I'm really, REALLY in the mood for it. And that doesn't happen to often. It isn't bad, it's just nowhere near as good as the others. Too freakin' easy.

Yes I have...Army of two sucks.
It's okay with a friend. I played with my sister's groom (damn, strange word) for 4,5 hours straight on his XBox 360.

Although I have to agree - it's good only with a partner. Otherwise, it's a worse version of Gears of War with worse controls, stupid difficulty level and dumb AI.

Oh, and I bought WAR because of self-hype. I loved the game in beta, but when I saw there was almost nothing to do after 20-25 except for PvP and grind, I quit.

Don't get me wrong, I bought the game for PvP. But not 1 vs 1, ganking or Scenarios, although the latter ones are nice. I bought it for Realm vs Realm and I was disappointed...

Gears of War and Halo. Great when you crank it up the first time. Wouldn't want to go through it again though.
Agree about Halo, but GoW is great IMO. I've played it 3 times already, but didn't finish because every time I got to act 4, game deleted my saves. Or a bit earlier. But it's good anyway. At least for PC...

And I still regret I bought Counter Strike Source. I mean, it's not a bad game, but TF2 is so much better it's not funny how I could've spent those $20 in a better way.

I try to avoid hype. My faith in it was reignited with LBP, which did live up to it in my opinion, but PlayStation Home quickly crapped all over it. Hype sucks.

I adored GTAIV for about two weeks after its release, even going so far to say it was the best game I'd played at the time. Then I got bored and didn't play it for many months. Went back to it for a few weeks just before Christmas last year and finally managed to play it for what it really is, a good but not great game.

The problem with hype among Escapist forumers seems to be that they allow there excitement to go beyond "this will be a great game!"

Know what you like and know that no game is the best ever. It will make your world better.

Of course, I'm open minded so it might not work for you.

Lets face it, all of have surcomed to hype at one point.
Nope.

I can honestly say that i have never surcomed to hype when it comes to gaming, if i see a game that i think looks fun, i try it out then make up my oppinion, dont really care what other people say/think about the game in question, seeing as its all about personal preference.

Closest i have come to surcoming to hype is if my mates say alot of good things about some game, then i try it out, either open beta or trial or even a Torrent if i so have to, but i never buy a game that i havent had the ability to try out first, cause you cant base your personal oppinions on what other people say.

I try to do my homework before I purchase a game, but my impulsive side got the better of me when it came to Forza 2. That game was piss poor, just piss poor.

Oh, well that's another matter entirely. It's one thing to get bored with a game after a while, but quite another to dislike something right off the bat. I got bored with CoD4 too.

The really dissapointing thing? It's a good length, but can be completed uber quick because it's so easy.
