We were discussing something like this in media studies.
How other people's opinions affect your personal opinion.
Sometimes, I succumb to the hype and get excited about a new game, but I usually wait until I play it myself.
Or I'll say, "I wanted to play it, but I hear it was shit."
I said that about Mirror's Edge, played it Saturday and liked it.
Wasn't too keen on the controls though. Damn XBox.

The only game that REALLY let me down after a load of hype was Zelda: Twilight Princess. I enjoyed it at first, but when I went back and played Wind Waker again after it, I realized "By the Triforce, this game is loads better!" though I stated it in a much less nerdy way =P

I can only play TP now if I'm really, REALLY in the mood for it. And that doesn't happen to often. It isn't bad, it's just nowhere near as good as the others. Too freakin' easy.
The really dissapointing thing? It's a good length, but can be completed uber quick because it's so easy.
EXACTLY! I mean, it's a well designed game. Very well designed. Maybe if they made like a Master Quest version of it, like they did with OOT. Except it would have to be a LOT harder.

Definately Twilight Princess. I loved it at first, now I think it's a modest piece of shit.

Plus, Little Big Planet. I was in a state of mind where I thought: user created content=awesome! Now I think: user created content=severely empty game.

GTA4 taught me a major lesson about not getting trapped in pre-release hype.
Its also the reason why Im not getting too excited about Killzone 2.
No expectations means no disappointments.

I agree about GTA IV, I haven't even been able to finish it because it just isn't fun for me. And I definitely expected much more.

And though it's not a game, I'm going to have to say the same thing for the Wii. Hype had me going for months, I had to buy it, it was going to be amazing. Before they even unveiled the real name for the thing (which actually should have been my first clue). That, and I couldn't even find one for six months or so. It drove me mad. Now it collects dust for the most part. I played through zelda and mario galaxy and that's pretty much it (although I will admit, I love world of goo).
