Has music become a replacement for conscious thought in today's youth?

This is something that?s been bothering me for a long time, what the fuck is the deal with music? In the past, I?ve admitted to not being much of a fan of music, only listening to the odd song like Push it to the limit [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhsTmiK7Q2M&feature=related] when I can remember to bring it to the gym for one of my more grueling work outs. I do own an Ipod, with about 1,000 songs on it or something, and listen in only rarely.

But can someone answer me why people listen to their IPods all damn day? Out of those 1,000 something songs, there?s only about 20 that I like to listen to more than once in a day, so I get bored of my IPod real fast. But on any given school day, with any one of my friends, they all have at least one head phone in their ears all the goddamn time.

From in class, to study halls, to passing periods; what the fuck are people listening too all day? You may have 4,000 sounds, but I don?t think its humanly possible to want to hear any given song on at any given time. I mean, surely you have favorites like me, and listen to them most of the time. A friend of mine recently told me that in class his IPod has recorded that he?s listened to a song something like 800 times. No matter how much you like a song, I cannot find possible. How many times can you possibly listen to a group of songs, no matter how large?

Kids are doing homework while listen to music. Working out while listening to music. Gaming while listening to music. Sleeping to music being blasted in their ears. Doing chores while listening to music. Driving while listening to music. All in a single motherfucking day.

It?s like being a fucking robot. My best friend, for one, sits next to me in math while listening to music and doing his homework. Blasting whatever metal band he?s into, talking to me, and doing his work at the same time. No fucking way he?s paying attention to the music. Its just there, blasting away.

So this brings me to my next point. I have ?proven? that people are not actually listening to the songs. I mean, I?ve had discussions with people that have one ear phone in their head, unless they?re all ubermensch, I cannot accept that they?re listening to the song like they normally would and be holding conversations.

I?ll be walking down the hall talking to a friend, who?s eager for us to stop talking so that he can plug in his headphones. It's like a fucking drug. And it?s not just with me, but when we?re in groups as well. A sick sort of escapism that lets you not think by blasting music in your head constantly? I believe that people are listing to their Ipods all day to avoid conversations. Not just because they like music, its impossible to be so attached to music to do this all day, all year

Ergo, I believe that this has become some sort of disgusting habit. Frankly I find it unnatural to have music pumped into your brain every single day for more than 3 hours a day. It?s sickening to have music blasted into your head constantly. It a way of blocking off mental awareness and consciousness. Music is a form of escapism; but it become like a magical get away drug for today?s youth. I find this no healthier than those MMO players that play WoW for 20 hours a day or what not.

The thing is cases like the above mentioned excessive gaming are far rarer than this. Take a look around. Almost every teen is doing this. And this level of Escapism is disturbing.

Thoughts?

The human mind is designed to seek out patterns. Music is nothing more than audio patterns. It pleases the mind.

It's that simple really.

Hmm...interesting topic/thoughts!

I listen to music when I'm surfing the net, driving, walking around town (unless I'm with friends; listening to music, or even just having a headphone in when talking, is the pinnacle of rudeness in my eyes) but very rarely studying. Maybe some people find music relaxing. Maybe they're just so god damn boring that they literally have nothing to say/input into a conversation, so they turn to music instead as an excuse to not HAVE to listen and communicate.

You only use your iPod in the gym? Why? To help you focus on something other than the pain/workout?

I don't think you'll ever get a definitive answer to this...but I think that once people grow up and enter into the adult world (holding down a job, looking after a family, etc.) then music might become either less important to them, or less prominent in their lives.

I think my thoughts and opinions can be rounded up in one simple sentence: they're probably all boring bastards.

I listen to podcasts. My daily trip to University is about 1 1/2 each way alone, and I listen to a different Podcast each day. I can never hear them twice. I do it because it's better than silence on a boring trip.

I'm listening to music right now! It helps pass the time when i'm not really doing anything, or doing anything I don't want to (like washing up or painting etc). I can listen to music when I am writing (on a low volume) and keeps me entertained during periods of writers block.

Surely this is a 'vicious circle'?

Edit: I'd also say while I spend a LOT of time listening to music, I am focusing on the music about 98% of the time. If I haven't got opportunity to listen to it, I'll pause it most of the time.

Also, some music is simply great for background music. Something like Aphex Twin is amazing to listen to when doing homework or getting to sleep.

I only listen to music when I'm on the computer or out walking because I hate the noises of the city and I'd have to listen to my grandmother's constant wheezing when at my computer if I wasn't listening to music.

In all honesty, that is quite a long time to be listening to music, but it helps me think and be at ease with everything rather than sitting in silence or surrounded by the constant bustling sounds of the cars and construction in my town.

I don't know why music's so popular either...I mean, other than the minority, most people love music in one form or another. It's so strange...it's like driving. Just about EVERYONE enjoys it, whether it be city or motorway driving. It's a mutual thing that we all like, only in different forms. We're strange creatures :D

I very rarely listen to music. My younger brother and I have bought an iPod together to share it, though only he uses it 95% of the time.

I can't concentrate on classwork while listening to music and while I'm on the tram I prefer reading (can't read while listening to music either, it's distracting). I don't do a lot of walking since I have a car, so I guess I just listen to the car radio, though that gets me the news, the weather, commercials and other stuff, so there you go.

I agree with the OP though. It's like everyone's listening to music all the time. I can imagine how some of the time it might be cool, but not all day. Eh, what do we know?

Well I do that just to drown out all the noises around me. Plus music always makes me imagine and relax so I listen as much as I can.

It helps me bring out my creative side.

I'm listening to Rush (Something for Nothing) in one earbud right now while I'm in Physics. Am I paying attention to the lecture? No. I'm currently backing up my stuff to change to Ubuntu 10.04. Am I listening to the music? Yes, but that's because I love the song. Usually when I'm on my computer I'll be listening to the Crystal Method (switched to Gogol Bordello, still paying attention) precisely because it is pleasing to listen to, but by lieu of it's being electronica, it doesn't matter where I listen to it. The reason I listen to so much music is precisely because I can use it to cut myself off from other parts of the world and devote more of my attentions to the task at hand. Any yet, (switched to Psychostick - Taco) I can still pay attention to the music, and I only choose songs for my mp3 player that I can listen to near-endlessly. By using rockbox, I can blend the songs together too, which helps.

I don't listen to a lot of music either, I don't own an iPod for that reason. If i'm in my house I may listen to some music if i'm bored.

People call me weird for not listening to music all the time, they say I don't like music , I do like it but i'm not obsessed with it.

Not that I know of, people just like music?
Just because you don't get it or it doesn't work for you the same way doesn't mean everyone else is insane.

Listening to music doesn't suddenly turn of brain function in the same way looking at a painting or smelling good food doesn't turn off all brain function. This seems pretty obvious to me. Movies and games have lots of music "in the background", games in particular almost constantly, yet people are still quite capable of playing the game or watching the movie, which requires intelligent thought. Yeah, some people probably take it too far, and listening to music while talking to people is just plain rude, but there's nothing wrong with some background noise to spice up the rather dull parts of your day.

I listen to my music a lot. I like listening to it when I am studying because it helps me concentrate on my work and drowns out other noises. I get distracted really easily, but music helps me focus on what I'm working on.

Yes. Seriously, just "yes" to literally everything you just said there. I used to think that I was the only one who felt that constant music in people's heads is one of the reasons we humans are getting so, so stupid as a whole. Now, I realize that I'm not.

I only ever listen to music if I'm walking or doing menial tasks. I love music, but if it's not getting the majority of my concentration then I'll feel bad. Walking for me is the best time, just have to worry about putting one foot in front of the other and getting lost in an album. So yeah, I can't understand people who listen to it as background noise. I find that does it a disservice.

I only listen to my metal when browsing the web or if I need something heavy to assist in a tough fight in a game (which is proven to work, they only 2 times I beat the last mission in Armored Core: For Answer (the one with you against 4 enemy NEXTs (5 on hardmode)) was while listening to Disturbed's Indestructible).

Other than that, my mind is open and dangerous to those in power that wish to keep me their little mindless sheep.

He bolded the part that he was addressing; basically, that the fact that listening to music all the time makes them boring.
