I don't know why music's so popular either...I mean, other than the minority, most people love music in one form or another. It's so strange...it's like driving. Just about EVERYONE enjoys it, whether it be city or motorway driving. It's a mutual thing that we all like, only in different forms. We're strange creatures :D

Surely this is a 'vicious circle'?
In what way do you mean?
He bolded the part that he was addressing; basically, that the fact that listening to music all the time makes them boring.
To be fair I did it in an edit :p

Yes. Seriously, just "yes" to literally everything you just said there. I used to think that I was the only one who felt that constant music in people's heads is one of the reasons we humans are getting so, so stupid as a whole. Now, I realize that I'm not.
Good to hear that someone agrees with me. Though, I wouldn't claim that Humans are becoming less intelligent, just that they're not putting all the intelligence to use anymore. Because of things like listening to music all god damn day stops them from doing so.

Someone may say, that any other form of entertainment is just as bad. But none are as popular.

During the school day, all personal electronics can and will be confiscated on sight for you to retrieve the next day. But, yes, as soon as the 6th period bell goes off the Ipods emerge from their owners pockets and immediately headphones are in ears, though they usually don't play music around other people. I think maybe for them it's a fashion trend or something like that.

But I only listen to music when I'm not talking to people, like when i'm on the bus home. The ride gets boring and I like to listen for rhythm patterns in the music. Aside from that I'm listening to my alarm clock radio right now. I think I enjoy listening to music so much because it can help me keep my thoughts in order and it's very relaxing for me to lie down and rest for a while after I spent a particularly difficult day at school. Also I don't do a lot of talking anywhere, and music also fills that silence.

That, and silence is creepy and ... Makes you aware of the spider ninja's making noises behind the curtains. Or that's just me being paranoid. >.<

Oh sorry, I didn't see it!
Either way, it's a fair point. But...if you have no personality to speak of, and you turn to music instead...then music might become an extension of your personality, if that makes sense.

Kids are losing the ability to communicate, not just because of music, but because of the internet, texting, gaming...there's so many activities which can be done in isolation. And it's sad, it really is.

I listen to music during math lessons and when I'm going home/elsewhere. I also do it when I'm by the computer. I'd say I listen approximately 1-3 hours a day.

Yes, I listen to music a lot. But I do it because I like it. Sure, when I'm writing or reading a book, I don't actively listen to it, but it beats the hell out of sitting in silence. And on some level, my brain is being stimulated.

I tend to listen to audiobooks and stand-up comedy monologues during Art Class, but only because most of the class is taking the 10th grade course, and I'm taking the 11th grade course, so I'm usually separated from the majority of the class (there are five 11th graders including myself, and three of them rarely show up for class.)

Okay? How so?

I just accidentally capitalized is since I'm used to spelling it as the site as a proper noun.

I listen to something whenever I'm not talking to anybody or doing other tasks that require hearing.(Multiplayer gaming notwithstanding) I just like having music to fit the atmosphere or mood and elevate it.(This might be the reason I'm hooked to game soundtracks in the first place)
That or it just helps me delve deeper into my imagination when I'm trying to work on something creative in my head.

Not a teenager, and I don't own an iPod or some other brand of mp3 player (no need to, my phone does that just fine, heh), but I can certainly weigh in on the omnipresence of music. If I'm sitting in front of my computer, I have music playing, or I'm playing a game/video/something else that precludes music. When I'm in the car? I definitely have music playing, the only time I ever turn it off is during phone conversations (typically by my passengers, not me).

Outside the environs of my computer room/car though, you won't catch me ambling throughout life sporting a pair of headphones (though I keep a pair in my pocket all the time just in case), as I'm either going to be at work, in the middle of something that involves concentration/conversation, or I'm trying to be asleep.

But if it's a choice between silence/background noise that doesn't concern me/music, I'm going to be playing music (I'm typing this up while listening to Devin Townsend for instance). There's nothing wrong with wanting some form of constant mental stimulation, unless your using it to avoid human interaction.

I listen to music often. I do find it as a way of escapism, but I will never, ever have music playing in my ear while talking to someone. That is simply rude.

I have a very strong emotional attachment to most of the music I listen to. It provides me a way to let these pent up emotions out in a way where I don't have to rant or complain to other people who may not want to hear it.

On the other hand, I will never just put music on to have it on. I always listen. Its the reason I can't fall asleep to music. TV, however, is another story. The TV in my apartment is always on (except when listening to music) due to my need for ambient noise. Quiet discomforts me, which is why I can never work in a library.

Maybe its for the fact that some people just like to listen to music while they go about doing their daily chores, is that really so hard to understand?

That's.......actually quite a good point. I dislike it when people have music playing all the time, especially when talking to you. clearly they aren't very interested in what you have to say. I personally only listen to music when doing schoolwork or walking/running. Oh and occasionally gaming. Certainly not to the level of a lot of people.

If pimp was subtle trolling none of us would notice. The man has over 17,000 posts to his name, many of which have some damn good content in [sub]I don't know why I reacted as strongly as this.[/sub]

You speak as if a love of music is some sort of ailment. The impression I got from your lack of music taste is that YOU'RE the one with an illness, not us.

As a musician (amateur) and I believe music can do a great service to people. Using it as a crutch to distance yourself from others isn't one of those things. I think that if Ipods and other music devices weren't so readily available those same people would find something else to plug into to, so that they could ignore everyone else around them.

Music itself is a language, and an art so I think it can have lots of benefits on society, but you seem to be describing a much larger problem, the way that these people delve into music makes me think they have other issues, and music is just the easiest escape route.

Actually I don't believe that there is any case where escapism can be "disturbing". Why? Because it's better than the alternative. You haven't looked at reality lately, apparently. Ugh.

Anyway, music helps me work and focus thoughts better. I do work and play games better while listening to music. But then again, I can't listen to music and talk to someone at the same time.

But then AGAIN, I have one song I listened to 500 times in one afternoon. I only have around 300-400 songs, but I can listen to any song for a ridiculous amount of time.

I wholeheartedly agree! Another problem is internet porn, in '60 there was so much less of it! It's causing the masturbation epidemic that we have now driving human population in advanced countries down :( PS. People are soo much dumber too [except me of course, I'm smart cause I've pointed it out ~.~] - I blame MTV!!!

Seriously, threads about "end of the world by Idiocracy" are way too popular on this forum. I guess it's just so goshdarn hard to imagine people liking other things than you do...

That is not the intention of the thread at all. Listening to music is not a problem, liking it is not the problem, loving it is not the problem. Obsessively listening to it is a problem, especially when it hurts your ability to function without it.
