Has Steam been giving anyone else trouble lately?

Basically, when I start up Steam, about 90% of the time it gives me messages saying it's unable to connect. As far as I'm aware, there's no difference in what I'm doing when it does decide to work, so I'm wondering if this is a problem with Steam itself. Just wanted to know if anyone else is having similar problems and/or what I could do about it.

If I've used a torrent program in the last day Steam won't work like you've described.

Restarting the PC and router seems to clear it's tubes though.

Do you always have these problems or only the last few days?
The left 4 Dead 2 demo is available so that could be what's ruining steam in your area if it's the last few days. If the problem is always then it could be a firewall problem.

I hate doing this, but one of these search results might help you. [https://support.steampowered.com/kb_search.php?searchwords=unable+to+connect] Normally I wouldn't give such a list but 5 pages of results it's a bit too much to search myself, the L4D2 demo is nearly finished downloading.

From the SA forums:

If Steam is hanging for a long time on startup:

This is probably a bug related to having a large number of friends and/or games. They introduced it with the same update that added taskbar progress indication and jump lists to Steam under Windows 7.

I fixed it by deleting clientregistry.blob, steam.dll and steamui.dll from the Steam folder and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\Users\*\friends from the registry. The fix should stick, although I have had to repeat it once.
It worked for me.

Recently? I've had problems with steam since I first started using it...It is the best form of the latest trend of over the top copy protection, however it's still shit and regularly decides to not work.

It actually did that to me on startup this morning. Gave me the "cannot connect to Steam" message. I closed the message, manually started Steam and it came up with no issues. Could just be a network hiccup- but if it's doing that to you constantly, you should follow AlphaOmega's advice and see how that goes for you.

I sometimes get a little message when it tries to auto-sign in. but It works fine when I click and open Steam.
damn well better work, I want to use my Garry's Mod I just bought. I won't have it wasted, along with the Orange Box...

Whenever i start up, i get that message. Most likely because my connection takes a second to go up. Annoying thing is i have to ctrl+alt+del and delete the steam.exe process so i can restart it.

Works apart from that though.
