Has the general reputation of Bronies gotten worse or is it just me?

I stopped hearing about it often so I assumed it got better. Then again, I'm not really around too many places on the net that have common topics about it so maybe I'm under my usual rock.

Like everything, once the fanbase grows it accumulates more and more potential crazies and morons. Just look what happened to Naruto once it hit TV in the US. Hell, look at gaming. I would argue the reputation of gamers was MUCH better before XBL appeared.
I would argue against that actually. The gamer stereotype was that of your stereotypical D&D no life nerd, or child. Gaming was for kids, it was a toy.

Now that it's hit mainstream, the very concept of mainstream means it's more acceptable as a whole. There will still be stereotypes, and some of the old ones will either linger or evolve into a different stereotype (example: like how now only RPG players are the no life D&D nerds, and now any/every MMO player is that fat guy from that one South Park episode.)

In a nutshell, the stigma surrounding being a gamer has been watered down because there's a lot more of us, and it's better understood than it was back in the 80's. Most rational people aren't going to look down on you for playing Call of Duty, which is a vast improvement over the crap we used to be stuck with.

I have never seen Bronies regarded in anything I call would call high esteem, outside of Bronies circles of course. I remember when they came around there were basically who got it and those who hated it. I am in the latter category.

No, I definitely wouldn't say that it's gone down. The only question is: has it gone up, or is it about the same? Personally, I think that the idea of being a Brony has stopped being either a hilarious novelty or an unacceptable evil from the perspective of those not involved in the fanbase, and is instead just seen as something that people enjoy. Now that a lot more people have been exposed to it, the general reaction is getting more tame.

In terms of the fandom's strength, it's only been getting more and more powerful as time goes on. The number of Bronies seems to have been increasing drastically recently, as well as the amount of content (and the quality of said content) that the fandom creates. I'm a firm believer that we are more than just an ordinary fandom, and I think that it shows more and more each day.

Honest reason I think there's a lot of hate: It's oversaturated online, everywhere you go you see my little ponies, forum avatars & tags, on every artists page on deviantart, on blogs, facebook & twitter, then there's famous gaming icons/etc being made into ponies and then "Original character" ponies, countless gifs.
Which is funny because as it stands, I think the artstyle is very charming and well done, but it's just EVERYWHERE.

That's my problem anyway, I mean as I type this there's literally 2 posters in a row with MLP avatars above the comment box and I'm sure when I hit post there's going to be more.

I have more issue when people say they have a "My Little Pony / Sonic original character" when that's an oxymoron. You can't base a character off a show/game & have the same art style/world and call it original, it doesn't work. Sure for like a fan thing that's awesome whatever but when it's a comic or more it's ...just irritating they're not instead trying to do something of their own.

Edit: Yep, as I said there's a MLP avatar above me, I believe it is anyway it's got the color scheme and the look of that one ...whatever her name is.

Hmm, no, not really. The people who despised it will never change, the ones who disliked it being spammed probably shrunk with how it no longer clogs the sites as much as it did. I remember when it was everywhere on the Escapist. >.>

At worst, yes. ...Which is still infinitely better then being mistaken for a misogynistic, racist homophobe who is possibly capable of gun violence. That is pretty much all you hear about gamers in this day and age. Obviously I don't agree with the sentiment, but others have clearly made enough of a ruckus doing those things for the public to take notice. These people were also brought in just recently (in the last few gens), which was my point. Being a gamer doesn't mean any of those things, but now that we've expanded we've welcomed those kinds of people inside, and their actions make us all look bad to many people. But this happens with every kind of fandom that already has a negative stigma. Hence why I compared it to bronies.

It is a shame you have steered clear of fanfics, there are actually some VERY good ones out there. Im guessing you want to avoid "shipping" and smut? On FIMfiction there is a mature checkbox if you want to avoid stuff, as well as a system of searching for fics based on category, so...thats there if you ever get curious I suppose. "Quantum Castaways" is one of my favorites mmhm.
Yes, that is pretty much exactly my reasoning & I did not know there was a way to filter it. Thank you, I may have to catch up on some in my spare time.

OT: Interesting to see how people do tend to find those bad things though.
Indeed. It is usually the more...devious parts of a fandom that people find out about first. I mean ask someone on the street what they think/know about furries. A likely answer they will give you is that they are a bunch of weirdos dressed up as animals fucking each other, because that is all they know. Of course, television did not help in regard to the image of the furry fandom. I wonder how those people find that stuff though. I mean do they randomly come upon it at 4chan, or did a friend send another friend clop as a joke? People are odd.

I've completely forgotten they existed. There hasn't been much pony spam here lately so better I guess?
Lucky you, I went out with a brony, who was also a furry and she occasionally sends me clop :/

Despite that we are still friends. Weird is'n't it?
My ex is/was a brony so I know your pain bro

Of course you are. Your name says it all. You stand against everything MLP represents!

Still, i feel like most people think of Bronies as childish and socially awkward at best and obsessive and delusional at worst.
I seem to remember a member on here, can't remember who, having the text under their name read "I want to cum inside rainbow dash."

Now, I've been a fan of several things in my time, even shows with animal-like creatures in them but have never, for instance, wanted to cum inside Cheetor from Beast Wars.
Let's be fair, here. Judging all bronies by those extremists is like judging Christianity by the Westboro Baptist Church. Or, for a better example, judging furries by the people who claim to have a reptilian soul.

Good, I remember that and it made me laugh.

Really Cheetor is the one you go for on the "sexy robot list" of beast wars? Not Air-Razor? Blackaracnia? Unless you're into dude in which case, why not Optimus?

I'll be honest, I've been wondering the same thing for a while now.
Personally, I think it was because I was doing that thing that people do where they just go places that they know will rile them up but they do it anyway because... because.
Yeah, I did not find happy people in there.
Non-personally, I don't really know. I feel like the haters have gotten a bit more vocal but that could've just been me wandering into a part of the internet that has those people. And as we've grown as a fanbase I'm sure we picked up a few people who just LOVE to stir up trouble, you know? Not all of us abide by the Love & Tolerance creed, as it were.
And the opinion that we're all creepy 40-year old virgin pedophiles that are into beastiality hasn't budged one bit.
Not to mention:

Yeah, I have to agree, this doesn't help us.
Doesn't help ANYBODY really.
And we're more-or-less running on steam because Season 3 ended and we're doing what we can to keep ourselves entertained.
Not that we're bad at doing that. Anybody who's seen Snowdrop knows what I'm talking about, we can make some pretty great stuff.
Anyway, really looking at it we're making some tremendous leaps right now.
- The fan episode Double-Rainboom is about to come out
-Lauren Faust hopped on to help make Fighting is Magic (granted, we took a blow to that one before she showed up)
Just wait a little while, we'll perk up soon.

I have to say, reading through a few of these has helped me as well.
Like I said, I was thinking the same as you for a while, I needed something like this.

When it first took off, and there was that over-saturation of people who just couldn't shut up about it? That was pretty bad. Now it's no more annoying to me than any other fandom.

Huh not sure why I picked Cheetor, I guess rejecting Blackaracnia would have made more sense. You know when I'm thinking about fucking animal robots their suggested sex just doesn't really play into it for me. Ultimately Cheetor just seems like he'd be least likely to mechanically malfunction and tear my penis off.

I take it you haven't heard of Las Pegasus Unicon, have you? I was thinking similar things about this fandom a while back, but then seeing so many pony fans from all over who weren't even a part of the con help to salvage a disaster like that and help unfuck all those affected with their own money... yeah, I'd say we're still good if a bit divided and bitchy at times. Our reputation is pretty bad due to some very obnoxious fans who are too forceful about the show or don't know how to complain in a civil manner (try being anti-Twilicorn without instantly being disregarded as a nut!), but that's always been the case and every fandom is like that. We're actually a fairly run of the mill fandom outside of the whole "must donate to EVERYTHING!!!" mentality we seemingly have.

Nb4 someone brings up the love and tolerance motto: Yes, I genuinely believe in that motto. I doubt I'm alone either, though I could very well be the minority there.

When I thought it was a joke it was funny. Now I realise it's not, seeing all the deadly serious topics about how it's declining in quality and blah blah blah is absolutely fucking hysterical.

I understand guilty pleasures, but Jesus fucking Christ - read a book, Lana.

IF the reputation has gone down, it's largely because of a couple things that have gotten a lot of attention.

Bronies are pretty much the reason that Derpy became a character at all, and when Hasbro made her a fully fledged character and people got all offended, the backlash against the decision to rewrite her, while I believe justified, did not look good on bronies as a whole.

Then there was the alicorn twilight thing that got way more publicity than it should have, and it really made the group of grown men liking a show made for little girls look like grown men acting like little girls. I can't justify that one, and if the image of bronies has been damaged because of it, then it's pretty well deserved.

I have no problem with people watching MLP and such, it's a show and it has fans. Although some people seem to want to label themselves instead of just enjoying the show.

I wish you would. At least then there would be a decent show being talked about.
