Has the heat died down? Is it OK to openly like Undertale again?

"Undertale is an SJW game" (not sure how people came to that conclusion but I saw it a few times)
It's mainly because tumblr got their fangs into it and tumblr is known for housing SJWs or whatever they'll be called in a days time.

I'm just suprised tumblr hasn't ruined it like they ruined Steven Universe for a lot of people.

I just started playing it so I can't judge the game itself.
I look forward to the day when the internet collectively loses its hate boner for Tumblr. People disliking something because someone else likes it is a textbook example of being a child.
The main reason people hate tumblr(imo) is because it because it brings out the worst of these "progressive" people. I can post on my twitter about what latest amiibo I was able to snag or a stupid movie idea (my latest being the Big Lebowski starring the cast of Disney's The Jungle Book) I'll get a response like "g8 find there m8" or "lol, that'd be funny to see". Meanwhile if I posted that same stuff on tumblr I'd get "Oh look, another privileged white male bragging about the stuff he bought with daddy's money" or "you're being insensitive to the furry community". I get their heart is in the right place, but these idiots are doing more harm than good.

Either way i'm enjoying Undertale for the first time. It's good.

There's asshats of every flavor on the internet, at least Tumblr has less death and rape threats than Youtube and Twitter. Heck, on some of the blogs I follow I see more people bitching about SJWs than SJWs on Tumblr. But none of these websites are comprised entirely of these kinds of people

And either way, the hate towards Tumblr is overblown, and the people who constantly make their hate for it known and keep generalizing it (Not you) are as self righteous as the people they criticize.

I rarely read the comments on youtube and I only use Twitter for comedic purposes so I really don't get exposed to that stuff. But I do know it exists there too.

I think the reason why tumblr gets so much hate is because as I said, their heart is in the right place but the way these people are going about it is not. Society wants to be more progressive but not at the cost of every little word a person says being dissected and then that person being persecuted to the point where their life is ruined forever because of one little microagression. So I think some people want to shine a light on the people on tumblr to hopefully get across that it is not ok to act like this. Or at least I hope that's how it is or should be.

Wait, there was a hype backlash for Undertale? Ha, and all this time i thought i was alone!

No but seriuosly i saw no backlash. everywhere i went i saw people praising the game to the point i was afraid of saying i got absolutely no interest in it.

Let me tell you a story.
I've first heard about Undertale shortly before the hype exploded. I've been seeing it before popping up in my Steam window - at that time it looked like another rpgmaker indie game to me, so nothing that interesting really. But then i saw the signs, people posting memes, people commenting on how it's "dah best gaem evur", there was even a piece in a game mag i'm buying on how it's something that hasn't been done before, something that you should try by yourself, approaching it without any expectations. At that time i knew, that this will be the next indie darling out there that people won't shut up about. Since i still was intrigued about it, i've figured out there's only one thing to do: hit the spoiler shelter, close the hype-gates. Unsurprisingly, since i was still using the net, i didn't exactly work out. Despite this, i've started, fairly recently, the game with relatively low exposure, and... it's okay i guess. I can give credit where it's due and appreciate originality and approachability. I like the bullet-hell combat mechanic, maybe because i've played lots of TBoI before. Not every joke works on me, some give me a chuckle, other more than that. I like some characters more(like the guy that currently occupies my avatar), some less. It's a box of chocolates of a game in that department. And i think that actually works in its favor. It's a small, cheap game(made by one person, nonetheless), that's a very good choice if you want to try something that hasn't been overplayed while you rest from "big" titles.

Hype backlash aside, every Next Big Thing gets it. Some deserve it more, some less. Despite how annoying a fanbase can be, you shouldn't cross it out because of it. Just don't act like a dick about it yourself. Doesn't matter if its Undertale, ponies or even, yes i dare to say it, vaping...

I'm of two minds about Undertale.

The first is that I hate the art style (and this from someone who thinks Stardew Valley is a gorgeous game), I think it is surpassing ugly. I cannot for the life of me understand the affection people have for the music, which I generally find to be noisome junk. I was spoiled, repeatedly, by everyone alive, about the shocking twists and oh-so-clever secret elements of the game, which seemed rather mundane as far as subversions go (more along the lines of "we had a subversion" rather than "we subverted something really interesting that had never been subverted before"). Replaying games ad infinitum is not something I enjoy or something that holds value for me particularly outside of strategy games, so a super short game designed to be repeated didn't appeal. And on, and on. Even at <$10, I could never bring myself to try it, despite a general enthusiasm for trying anything strongly recommended by the community.

All that said, a lot of people seem to genuinely love it, so I'm perfectly willing to accept that Undertale is a great game that simply does not appeal to me, rather than "it's a secretly terrible game and only I am wise enough to see it". Perhaps if I played it I'd like it in spite of all my reservations. I'm just in no rush.

And if I DID play it, and it WASN'T better than Witcher 3...and I seriously, seriously, seriously doubt that it is...at that point I WOULD start hating it and considering it the kind of hipster indie horseshit that gets over-hailed and pointlessly felated. And I don't LIKE hating video games, it's uselessly expended energy. So it's probably best I don't play it.

I do love me some internet/gaming drama/etc. and I did think Undertale was a pretty poor game, but I really haven't seen any "heat" against this game. And I lurk those hotbed places for this kind of thing and even there the game is fairly well liked. So if there was "heat" then it was fairly lukewarm.

Oh hey. You just described my position on the game damn near perfectly. Although I've managed to avoid any real spoilers.

I actually have a soft spot for pixel art, but that particular style of pixel art (it's from the 8-bit era, right?) looks fucking hideous to me. I wish developers would stop imitating it. It's like going hiking with someone who insists on lighting the campfire by twirling a stick.

I'm willing to admit that it's probably a cool game and I intend to try it at some point, but I just never seem to get around to it, even with it's low price point.

The Steam forums were very toxic for a while. The protagonist's sex is never mentioned, the pronouns the game likes to use is they/them instead of him/her. This is because Undertale references the fallen child and you as a player. This however was interpreted by many people as proof positive that the child was transgendered since they/them are pronouns that transgendered individuals sometimes use.

That train of though, while a giant leap in my opinion, was by itself harmless. The toxicity came from if you did not recognize the child as transgender and assumed he/she was male/female, YOU ARE A BIGOTED TRANSPHOBE PUSHING YOUR HATE ONTO THE GAME AND APPROPRIATING THE PROTAGONIST AWAY FROM THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY!

It forever left a sour taste in my mouth. Similar fandoms like MLP or Steven Universe had similar experiences (I never cared for said franchises but I watched their communities as an outsider) in part because their respective community members were so obnoxious. I played Undertale before it blew up and enjoyed it for what it was before the community fanaticism soon took over attention away from the game and forced meaning, complexity, and acceptance to what is just a simple game.

Fandoms do this all the time for everything. They like to ruin good things by being pains in the asses, and certain series tend to get VERY toxic and off-putting due to how they act in the community where you can't even have a decent conversation without getting shit all over by stupid internet idiots. I don't let them bother me. This goes in turn with the moron hipster douches that hate anything that gets really popular because they like to feel different, even when their reasons are complete nonsense. So it comes down to this, it is okay to have differing opinions, and as long as both parties can explain their view points with logic and reason, then a nice discussion can take place which would be fun to get differing view points. As expected this hardly ever happens on the internet.
