What is intelligence and who are you to judge who is and isn't it?
Well for starters, like stated before.

Jade Goodie was a failed actress.
The other girl knew about the advanced areas of physics, astronomy and astrology, and even down to the things the average Joe would know, soap opera's for instance.
So academic achievement is the only form of intelligence in the world then is it? What an idiotic concept...
Well, consider that academic achievment, in a lot of ways, is the most impressive.

I disagree; anyone, if they are prepared to work hard enough, could become book-smart.

I know I'm going to be flamed for this, but I'll say it anyway.

I put it down to the large Evangelical anti-science movement in America.
You're not going to be flamed for two reasons:
1. We're better than that.
2. Many of us are anti-religion. It's so prominent that it's cool to defend religion here.

And I would agree with you. It's a movement that actively opposes intellectualism and promotes blind following and not thinking. The goal is unthinking people and rigid adherence to faith. Modern media like the internet isn't destroying thought: It's just putting it in a condensed form and giving voice to regular people.

This explains some of the stupidity in the states, but in Europe our idiocy is fuelled by Reality TV(shows like big brother, not so much talent shows) , New Rap music and instant celebrity culture. All of which promise success with no hard work or ability, then when they fail at this they are supported by benefits.

Therefore they will naturally hate those who succeed through ability and effort, either through jealousy or they'll feel deprived or unfairly treated

Hatred of the intelligent seems to be a more western trend. Being abnormally intelligent is the only positive trait that can make a person become an outcast, at least in the middle and high school levels.

What follows is not personal experience(I grew up in the US) but information from my mom who grew up in South Korea.

In most Asian cultures your very worth as a human being is judged by how well you perform in school, the dumb are outcasts and even the janitors had bachelors degrees. Students were also beaten for being lazy, just just spanking actually being punched in the face and beaten to a pulp with rods.

Things may have changed in the few decades since my mom has moved away from Korea but maybe there are some things that we can learn from eastern culture.

(Parenthetical statement to avoid potential flaming) I am not a Japanophile. I consider the Japanese culture to be a very strange mashing together of old traditions dying out and a lot of strangeness taking its place.
Anybody know about the propery market in South Korea?

I'm so sick of the whole class "being kept back" because Hyperactive Rich Prick #380,000 over there is trying out "Operation Make Myself Look Cool" despite the fact that we're now in University and nobody really cares. I come here for an education and the days where I fear the jocks coming to flush my head down the toilet so they can take the lunch money out of my Battlestar Galactica lunchbox are long gone.

(Notice: I was not that pathetic in High School.)

I agree.

But who is smarter? The one who can grasp far reaching concepts, but shuns society and becomes a bald loner with no job or the one that puts in the work and becomes a doctor with a happy family?

Neither - it depends entirely upon the circumstances; that and are they happy, being the main question - if the Doctor still feels unfulfilled despite a happy family yet the far reaching loner feels content - well, there is no one that is smarter because it all comes down to personal opinion and personal feelings.

We decide in our heads what intelligence is based off our ideals and prejudices - as such no-one is truly intelligent and nobody is truly unintelligent; we just are, and that's why this thread is poorly throughout.

I guess it is natural for the weak and stupid to fear the smart and strong.
Unfortunately, the number of dumb people outnumber us smart people, and they control the government (don't ask me how or why) and so I guess that's what happens.

I'll ask again, what is intelligence and who are you to judge who is and isn't it?

Intelligence has traditionally been viewed as evil or, at least, morally deficient. Everyone knows good people are hardy and simple, toil in farms, and serve king and country without question.

Farm me potatoes and don't ask questions.

Yep stupid people outnumber smart people. Oh wait, if the world was run by morons, then our society would have crumbled long ago.

Think before you say stupid things.

I blame our standard of living. In most of the world, idiots reproduce, but where old-time natural selection would have weeded them out, society encourages that they be given a fair chance.

This is ok and all, don't get me wrong, but you're not going to have natural selection if the tiger that's supposed to eat your idiot to keep him from spreading his genes is locked in a zoo.
