So we're equating intelligence with a good work ethic, now?

There always has been, and always will be, people who are content with what they can get without effort and people who will strive to create and achieve. I don't see how this impacts humanity as a whole.
Not work ethic, no. Motivation to do anything, whether that means volunteer, exercise, whatever. Think about how obesity has been rising in recent years, for example.

I know I'm going to be flamed for this, but I'll say it anyway.

I put it down to the large Evangelical anti-science movement in America.
Care to join me in my nuke-proof bunker?

The last few hundred years have had science shooting down the core claims of fundemental belief. The only solution - convince the population that science is the preserve of gay/baby killing/ flag burning/ nazi sadists (no these things are only of equal evil if you are of a fundementally dim turn of mind), bent on ruining America. its a more sophisticated (as in it has money and power behind it), for of namecalling the smart kid because he proved you wrong. Luckily the U.k (being one of the most secular nations in the world) hasnt got AS bad, intelligence is mearly regarded as a bit poncy, not actively opposed to god or whatever.

Oh, who really cares about the majority anyway? Personally I like living in a cave with my bass guitar and the internet. As such, I choose what sorts of people I want to deal with.

No, of course not.

This thread reeks of elitism.
You can say that again.

I'm so sick of people who call themselves intellectuals. Most of them are assholes inflating their egos with the fumes of ignorance.

A little while back, some of you may recall, a very intelligent young woman stepped onto a TV quiz show and scored an insanely high score at an insanely tough quiz, shortly after you was bombarded by threats, insults, and so on.

Why? Because she was intelligent? Because she has a very large potential?
Now let's move on, now we look at Jade Goodie (NO, STOP, STOP, STOP, THIS ISN'T A JADE GOODIE HATE THREAD), after throwing some rather nasty insults, she comes back with cancer, then suddenly, the women who everyone ABSOLUTELY HATES, is popular because of this.

She, god rest her soul, never really did anything intelligent to earn fame, but she is covered in roses and choclates, and a over-achiever is treated like the scum of the Earth?

I don't mind those who arn't intelligent, but a few decades ago those who where intelligent where respected, as where the dim, now for some reason the intelligent are beginning to become hated, but why?

It's been going on for awhile.

Intelligent people have the habit of alienating themselves through their inability to understand or relate to someone of lower intelligence. The world hates show offs, and most intelligent people, consciously or not, act like show offs.

Intelligence is hated.

Thats it.

You either try to dumb down and talk to the idiots or you don't pretend and you're looked down upon. I hate to sound like i'm being elitist or superior but a lot of people are threatened when thay meet someone intelligent. The intelligent person is then expected to dumb down, or they are "feeling smug just because they're a little more smarter(sic) then everyone else".
It's just the way the world works and it's very depressing, If you use a word longer than about 4 sylabbles before you hit 5th year in secondary school(high school), you will be laughed at. Not only that, but if you keep using these words/Sound intelligent you will be alienated.

Well, consider that academic achievment, in a lot of ways, is the most impressive.
I disagree; anyone, if they are prepared to work hard enough, could become book-smart.
But they don't, and anyone who does is looked down upon because they tried to better themselves.

Rorschach was right, The world sucks.

It's a sad thing I know, intelligence is no longer respected but rather ridiculed.
It all depends on what you do with your gifts. If you waste your time on game shows or hanging around MENSA gatherings, then people have good reason to hate you, you're wasting your talents on trivial things. I hate those clowns.

I qualify for this group: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheus_Society

However, I consider the entire concept to be arrogant and wasteful. What's the point? Why waste your time on that stuff when you can be doing something useful with your intellect?

I think the ire comes from those who identify the whole of their being by their mental abilities rather than something they've actually accomplished. Random chance doesn't take effort, which is all intelligence boils down to, random chance.

I think it would help if people didn't consider how smart you are as some ultimate proof of your worth. Didn't people use to propagate that muscles < brains? Maybe it's time people gave intelligence a similar treatment?

There was this girl in my class who mentioned that killing a pig is like killing a 3 year old human because they have the same intelligence. I was tempted to ask her why intelligence would measure how much worth someone's life is, but I remained silent.

I refer you to the start of Yahtzee's Skate 2 Review, This is why the world has changed.
That's rather brilliant.

I'm going to kill you.

People make fun of EVERYTHING, especially if the thing they're making fun of stands out. Hurting people's feelings is funny now... man what the hell.

Pig: Can become pet and provide amusement for family, start and maintain family, feed many upon death.

3 year old baby: Contributes to overpopulation difficulties, cries a lot, transforms food, drink and diapers into dirty diapers, drools.

I think we can measure their worth by their accomplishments here...

No. People don't hate intelligence. But if someone were to take a look at this thread, there is another trait that's VERY common, and one that isn't very pleasant.

Arrogance is something many people frown upon. When you separate between yourself (as an "intelligent" person) and "stupid" people, and complain and complain about it, you're not making yourself out as a ver nice person. Intelligence and arrogance doesn't need to be linked, they just usually are, especially in forums like these, and with people who consider themselves really intelligent and important.

If you'd just get over yourselves a bit, and grow up a bit mentally, and treat people like equals, and with respect, and stop separating people into cathegories, I'm sure even the people you used to think of as stupid would treat you with more respect. Keep up the arrogance, and they'll keep hating "intelligence".

I think people don't like things that don't conform to what is 'normal'. Modern society is the cause. We are positioned to marginalise people not fitting the norm. Somehow, being smart isn't normal anymore.

I think some of the problem is not even really recognizing some of the issues at work here. I don't think anybody would really claim to have a problem with intelligence in general, but the attitudes it can cause in people.

People can use it in the same way as talent at sports, music, or what have you, to have an attitude of saying they are better than everyone else. You can see it in this thread, people claiming that they are the only smart one and every one else is ruining the world. Most people don't respond favorably to arrogance, especially of that level. I am not trying to say however that all intelligent people are arrogant or that they deserved to be put down for their intelligence level.

Envy does also play a part, but feeling envy is a natural part of the human condition, it is just a problem and a waste when it causes someone to lash out to tear another person down instead of motivating the person to improve themselves.
