Has there been any advance in mood stabilizers in the past few years?

I had been medicated for the majority of my childhood through early 20s. And I eventually made the decision to get off my meds and experience life sober headed. I'd say for the most part, it's better, as the meds really only kept me baseline mood, never higher never lower. Being off them, I'm back to my regular mood swaps very few weeks from unbelievably happy, and unchangably depressed. Nothing I do can worsen my good moods, or better my bad moods for any length of time. (Something crappy happens, and I'm upset for an hour, than happy again. Or when depressed if something awesome happens, if I get excited or happy at all, it's extremely short lived.

Today marks a peak bottom day, and it got me thinking about my old meds. Have there been improvements? Think I'll be able to find something that let's me be happy on them, and doesn't just baseline zombify me?

Umm, I have a friend who take them as well to counteract his numerous disorders. And from what I've gathered from him...

not really :/

I assume you have bipolar I or II? There are other mood stabilisers that can be used these days like sodium valporate but lithium does remain a cornerstone of treatment.

I kind of assumed as much, which sucks, but I'd still rather take the downs if it means I get to keep my ups.

I used to take Depakote, which I had the most success with, (it's a sodium valporate), not sure what meds I might have been on as far as lithium. I've been on such a myriad since my childhood they all blend together at this point, with only a few somewhat effective ones standing out.

Thanks for the responses, not surprised, was just kind of thinking I'd give it a shot since I haven't looked into it in a while.

Well it's up to you. I have no idea how severe yours is but with my aforementioned friend I suggest taking them still.

But then again, his ups were just as bad as his downs in a lot of ways.
