Well .. there is surely the whole media scapegoat thing that's used to cover up for bad parenting and education ... but let's face it .. sometimes this can be a case by case thing .. some people might actually get inspired by very violent games/movies and try to imitate what they saw in real life (like children do).. usually those are people with mental/psychological issues .. i have no idea how to prevent violent games/movies from reaching those people.

At least with children (woh are prone to imitate anything they see) we have age rating to clearly indicate for both retailers and parents (since many games can now be bought online) which age is suitable for which game ... the majority of blame here falls on the parents who actually never bother to check what games their children are playing or what games they are buying (probably due to the stupid stereotype that the media created in the past --> "videogames are for kids") .. and now the same media is blaming video-games for violence .. pffft ...ironic.

Personally i didn't get affected by violence in video games even the slightest eventohugh i played a lot of violent video games (from Mortal Kombat to God of War series) .. but i still shivered in disbelief at how ridiculously violent the New Mortal Kombat Fatalities and X-rays are .. still can't play games with senseless cruel violence like Postal ... and still can't hurt even an insect that i know for sure isn't harmful (in real life that is) .. ah .. just a normal person you know XD

Violence prevents crimes actually...especially from several people.

Besides, no one is that stupid to try and do something that would obviously risk themselves. Not even a 9 year old..

Not at all. I have always played games like Unreal Tournament and Mortal Kombat, but I turned out fine... or at least I think.
I believe that the people who are affected by video game violence is people who can't see the difference between fiction and reality.
By affected I mean believing what you see is true like health regeneration and the ability to chop a guys head in half with your fist (Mortal Kombat)

This.

The September 11th Cosgrove phone call is more profoundly distressing than anything I've experienced in any fiction ever. Heck, if anyone wants me to post the science on this matter again then I'd be happy to do so; violent video games haven't been proven to have any long term negative effects on any age group to date.

Just to really drive the point home, Kafka et al (1988) (I used to have a great link for this study but its server seems to be dead now) found that forcing a mixed gender, mixed age cohort to watch up ten hours of overtly pro-rape media (yes, the concept was baffling to me too, but trust me: the stuff they showed was insane) per day for an entire week only lowered the subjects' sympathy for rape victims by c. 30% and the effect completely disappeared after one week of cessation.

Fiction doesn't do anything. Lighten the fuck up, controversy magnates.

Yes it has affected me.

But in a very minor way, I'm no more violent then I was before video games.
I may be desensitized to 'fantasy' violence but if it's real (I mean actual real life situations not movies but that's another story) non-fictious violence I'd be shocked.

I really don't know if violence in videogames has desentizised me.

In the age of about 8 or 9, my brothers and me played games like UT99 and Doom 2, later came Quake III Arena and some really bad ones, including games like Postal 2 or Manhunt. I'm not bragging, I'm just trying to tell you that I have seen some of the most brutal and humiliating videogames to date.

Violence in videogames have not made me a violent person, I can say that much. I'm 18 atm and never seriously got in a fight or beat somebody up just for my amusement. I don't like violence in real life. Today, I can enjoy any kind of game regardless of how much blood and gore it contains.

Hope that answers your question. A definite "No".

Video Games have never made me lose my sense of reality besides a few times where i was so immersed i turned in the game inorder to face some one walking into the room i was actually in. With the violence argument i will tell you that when playing a game you know there is no real life consiquences. In ME or Dragon Age i will choose to fight instead of negotiate in a heartbeat because its just a game, and if things go bad i can just reload. In real life i much rather negotiate then act like an ass inorder to provoke the other person, though in my experinces i have learned its best to throw the first punch. Its not that i cant fight, its that i dont want to, espically because of the consiquences.

Oh I am definitely affected.

I played God of War 3 once. Initially, I was all "Ugh! This is awful! Does Kratos really need to be so brutal?", but after several hours, my reaction instead was "...Kratos' killing moves don't seem to have much variation... Can't he come up with more creative ways to kill things?"

I don't think so, then again everyone is different. I used to play MK all the time in my childhood, and some of the fatalities in the new MK are some of the most horrific acts of violence I've ever seen.

Actualy I feel it makes me less prone to use violance in real life as a means to "solve"(escalate) an issue like someone pissed me off or something is broken. and i know it ceartainly does that with my cousin that would punch someone at the slightest provocation. whatever hormone that causes violant behavior gets used up playing the games might be the reason why. but then again 30 years ago watching violant R rated movies full of violance, gunfights murder and lotsa sex didnt turn me into a crazed killer/rapist that shoots up a mcdonalds and rapes the girl at the counter because they didnt hold the onions! why would i think a kid playing GTA4 would?

An issue with violant video games is they are not meant for children so the whole "makes kids into violant adults" is a moot point. instead of telling us adults or parents of mature 16-17 year old teens what we can or cannot have for our entertainment they should concentrate on informing parents how the rating systems work and if your child is begging you for Duke Nukem forever to go online and google it before buying(though i think its humour is of the 14-15 year old variety). the problem is not the games but the parents who do not realize that the average game player is over 30 years old and many of them enjoy adult themes in the games such as violance, foul language, and full frontal nudity/sex. it works the same as any other media. if the game isnt rated E or equivelant rating then its not for your 10 year old, violant video game issue solved!

The problem is people make connections to video games and violence where there may not be any. I think Yatzee said in one of his reviews something about how if a mass murderer had, at some point in their life, come in contact with a Sega Megadrive people would start believe Sega causes murder.

Personally I'm hoping all of this blows over eventually. Film and books had to go through stuff like this I believe. The thing that annoys me the most is when people pick up an MA5+ rated game and still express concern that it is not suitable for their children. It's hard to argue that when we're already agreeing to it... I've honestly seen some people who fully believe video games are played only by little kids.

I play video games almost all day long, shooting, impaling, detonating. And I'm one of the most sensitive people I know. I cry during episodes of "Halo Legends" (I find myself overcome with emotion when people sacrifice themselves to save others) and various anime like FMA or Elfen Lied, or even Shuffle!. Hell, I cry during video games too, like Persona 3.

Now if all of that time spent in Starcraft or Grand Theft Auto or Halo was really enough to desensitize me and render my empathy skills all but dead, I don't think I'd be able to cry so easily.

People who say that are just idiots who haven't actually played a game they consider violent. No More Heroes, Mad World, Batman Arkham Asylum, and Red Steel 2 are all games that are fairly violent in their own right, and I find them more cathartic than anything else. I would never try to do any of that stuff, because I don't want to hurt anyone, but it helps me vent, I'll say that.
