Oh look, it's this thread again. No, Old Republic will not kill WoW. Even the developers themselves have states they aren't out to "kill WoW" and just want to make a good game.

Every time someone says something will kill WoW, that game automatically becomes worse. >_>

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Im more interested to see what happens with the 40k mmo since its supposedly not copying wow, Im hoping it either becomes another planetside (with real support) or something new and cool

Star Wars The Old Republic isn't trying to be a WOW killer, they have said that killing wow is not a priority. There is no reason for TOR to kill WOW, if it is good(which I hope it is) then it will just be another good mmo that coexists with WOW.

If you make killing WOW your game's #1 priority, your going to fail.

There have been quite a few games touted as "WoW killers" but this will probably end just like the rest.
I can't say I'm against the idea, though. It'd be sort of nifty to hear people gushing about Star Wars instead of their Lich King raiding bullshit.
Or, even more novel, if people played other games.

That's a silly idea, though.

Honestly, I don't think anything less than World of StarCraft has the power to stop the beast that WoW has become.
I would play that game.

No seriously.

WoW be DAMNED if I could play a StarCraft MMO.

Star Wars certainly does have the fanbase to potentially beat out WoW, but I'd say Guild Wars 2 is the bigger contender.
I agree GW was at least for some time The RPG after WOW and they seem to be developing interesting new settings for the genre.
I think it still is the #2 one. The big deal is that you don't pay subscription fees, which is the primary reason people won't play WoW. Also, with no subscription fees there isn't any reason for them to artificially inflate the grind.

You have to realize, Blizzard has been doing RPGs for a looooooong time, and Lucas Arts is still new and rusty to the franchise. They're more used to making FPS, Flight Sims, and platformers, instead of RPGs. Though admittedly, Kyle Katarn made a pretty cool character to play as.

Will it match WoW blow for blow? Fat chance. But it will definitely be a contender for second place if it's any good.

I personally am a Guild wars fan myself, and can't wait for GW2.

That said I think everyone on this site will admit to a strong love for Bioware, and most will admit to loving LucasArts.

So all they need tod o is make an Ok game, and it will do well. Partially because of who is making it. Partially because it is based on Star Wars, and partially because it is something new.

The only way WoW is ever going to meet its match is if everyone working on the game decided to go on holiday and never go back to work. Blizzard is too competent in its current form to let WoW lose enough quality to let any hardcore type MMO to get a larger user base than WoW. Until WoW sucks no MMO, even if it's better than WoW, will be able to beat WoW because WoW has the netwotking effect on its side.

WoW's been around for ages, has a gigantic fanbase and is still getting updates. It has the edge, the size, the support, the people. A new MMO isn't going to tear everyone away from WoW, I don't care if it's Star Wars or Starcraft.

WoW is going to be like Diablo when it goes out, people will have hacked it and will have private servers for people to do quests. That is assuming if it ever really does go out, scale down maybe but WoW has been around and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

But the new Star Wars: The Old Republic, seems to me like the kind of game that could be a competitor.
Essentially... no. Not gonna happen. WoW is too big and too well-known to be killed off or even matched. Why would anyone play a game similar to WoW when they can just carry on in Azeroth without losing their progress?

The only time an MMO will threaten World of Warcraft is when it's substantially different to it.

If they release a trial, I'll give it a pop, I like things Star Wars.

Although I'm looking forward to the Fallout MMO. I'm pretty sure it won't become a match for WoW, but I'll still enjoy playing it.

If I can stop doing heroics and dailies on my Shaman >_>

If it will it won't be at the point of release, give The Old Republic some time, let patches and updates be released, then it may have a chance, but like many have said before there's a WoW expansion still set to come out.

So was FFXI...
So was Star Trek online...
So was Warhammer...
So was every other god damn game...

People keep trying to 'kill' WoW and its not going to happen.

"But Star Wars is a huge IP!!!!!"

Uh huh. Galaxies was Star Wars and Galaxies was god damn awesome and incredibly unique. Player based economy, literally all items were crafted by players. The richest god damn trade system ever in the history of games. Player cities that were non instanced. A skill system that was so god damn pure greatness it leaked joy and fun.

The game was a god damn wonderland.

And it DIED. In its dying breath it tried to emulate WoW desperately, and only managed to piss off all there veteran players.

SW:ToR will not 'kill' WoW any more the Aion or Star Trek or Guild wars or Warhammer did. It might do very very well, but it won't 'kill' it. You seem to think the millions of players, who have spent years and hundreds of dollars playing WoW will suddenly drop all the progress and friends they have made to go play SW:ToR.

Star Trek and Warhammer and arguably LotR are WAY larger IP's then Warcraft was at the time of creation. Yet here we are.

As much as people love screaming about how WoW is doomed nothing will change. SW:ToR might be very very popular, but it won't 'kill' WoW.

Christ.
